Savant Mobile ROSIE Home Automation

Savant has created ROSIE Home Automation software for mobile devices. The touchscreen application is now available for the Apple iPhone, the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet and the Samsung Q1 Ultra-mobile PC. It features RacePoint Blueprint to help you set it up and monitor your home by remote. Use the interface for appliances, lighting, gaming systems or other electronics. With a price of $199.99, you can find the Apple version at the iPhone AppStore.

Microsoft Plants Kiosk in Front of Apple Store

Microsoft, in a clever move, located an “I’m a PC” recording kiosk outside an Apple Store in Birmingham, England. By the way, if you really are a PC, you can upload a photo or video online and you might find yourself in one of their commercials. The company has already selected several of them in ads that are airing on network TV and are part of a $300 million advertising campaign. We’re all for any idea that doesn’t feature Gates and Seinfeld.

iNap Application for iPhone

First iPhones get the handy Google Earth, now go one step further. Suppose you are taking a trip by train, bus, or subway, and it is such a long trek that you can’t stay awake. With the maps and GPS, insert the address, city, or station that you are going to and take that power nap. An alarm will go off when you reach your destination. The application also works with iPod touch. You can download it here.

mStation Stereo Tower

It seems that Voix isn’t the only company that is into iPod tower speakers. Made of extruded aluminum, the floor standing mStation 2.1 Stereo Tower has up to 100W of power, a 5.25-inch subwoofer and a 6 cradle docking station that syncs with iTunes. The 10 key IR remote allows for navigation and adjusting treble, bass and volume. USB and stereo Mini cables are included in the package. We dig the design, but you can expect a $295.95 price tag.

If you’re a Sonos fan, then you immediately understand what this means. If you own an iPhone or iPod touch, you get a touchscreen Sonos controller, at no extra cost. Seriously, that rocks. The new app gives you access to all the new Sonos 2.7 features we told you about earlier as well, like Rhapsody, Sirius, Last.fm, and tons of radio from across the globe. In fact, with the Sonos Controller for iPhone, you can access music from any computer on your network, a NAS drive, or even a Time Capsule. When you realize that one of the standard Sonos Controller remote costs $400, you begin to see how big a deal this is. Releasing this as a free download makes Sonos instantly easier to use, especially in a multi-zone, multi-iPhone household, like mine.

Google Earth Now Available on the iPhone

Google just released a free iPhone/iPod Touch version of its popular Google Earth desktop mapping application. The application allows users to fly around the globe with just the swipe of a finger; tilting the unit adjusts your view, zoom in or out by simply pinching your fingers. The new app also integrates geo-located Wikipedia articles – fly to the pyramids, and read all about them, all while riding the bus to work. Check out the video above for a look at the functionality.

Apple shipping iPhone USB power adapter in huge box

Apple has had a a mind for all things “green” as stated in their past two keynotes. A few weeks back, Apple recalled the iPhone power adapters because the prongs were breaking off into the wall socket, which could cause an obvious jolt of unpleasant experiences. Apple offered two ways to replace the USB adapter, by mail or by going to their stores. The people who chose to have it sent by mail have been surpised to find that the new, greener Apple has shipped the small adapter in a box that about 100 times its size. I am sure Apple will take notice and do something about it, but it seems all the eggs are not in the basket when it comes to their “green initiative.” This just proves that going “green” takes time, and within a large company such as Apple it will continue to take months—or years—for them to achieve their goals. If you have an iPhone and live close to an Apple store, you can do your part by exchanging it yourself. If you are out of range of an Apple store and have done the exchange, let us know if you have had the same “large box” experience.

Apple Spill Detection Waterproofs Your MacBook Warranty

Spill your morning coffee on your MacBook and then take it in for covered warranty service? Those days are ending; water damage is obviously a violation of the AppleCare warranty, and the new MacBook and MacBook Pro computers, introduced last week, include what cellphones have had for years: Liquid Submersion Indicators, which alert technicians to water damage. Located under the keyboard and near the trackpad, the sensors change color when exposed to a liquid. Once these sensors are activated, there is no way to undo the process, so you’re just gonna have to fess up next time, so please - no more Shirley Temples near the hardware, okay?

The Mac mini has had a good run, but it sounds like Apple has decided to give the mini the ax. The smallest and cheapest Mac is no longer shipping or available for order, according to a couple large retailers in Europe say Gizmodo. Apple has a large financial call taking place today in which the mini is expected to get cut from the Mac lineup. Lets hope this is in preparation for an upcoming Mac mini (Mac nano?) at January’s MacWorld Expo as many suspected the mini to get a makeover, not a going away present.
The Mac Mini is still available on the Apple store, so you may want to get it now if you were thinking it over.
