We know that a bunch of our readers are gadget freaks to the point where we had to launch to specifically cover the opening of new gadgets. Looking to expand upon that, we are now launching a new video show, Unboxing Live. In Unboxing Live, we will simply take a new gadget, and open it up while the camera is rolling. We will show off the device, and any included accessories. This will not be a review show though, as the video reviews will remain a part of our other show, . In the first episode of Unboxing Live, we take a look at the Logitech Harmony 720 Advanced Universal Remote Control.

Want to subscribe to Unboxing Live? You can find Unboxing on iTunes, or you can add the feed to your RSS reader.

Gear Live iRiver clix Giveaway

Just a reminder…

So, check it. Gear Live reader and forum contributer Admiral_Kirk made it clear to us that our recent contests have been a bit too hard, not allowing the Average Joe to win because of the expertise required. Fine, we can understand that. So, we decided that to make up for that, we will make it insanely easy to win an iRiver clix from us. I mean, seriously, the person who wins is the person who wants it the most.

We want you, our readers, to help support the site in any way you can think of. No, we are not taking cash donations, we want to see your creativity. How can you support us you ask? Easy:

  • Start posting on our forums, and contribute to discussions taking place there. We will be monitoring them - if you become a regular, you are entered to win.
  • Add us to your Digg and/or Netscape friends lists - username andru - and vote for the stuff we submit. If you help promote any of our stories, from any of our sites (Gear Live, Playfeed, The Bleeding Edge, TV Envy, Unboxing, End Score, etc.), you are entered to win. There is no limit to the number of entries.
  • Link to us on your site, your MySpace page, your blog, in your signature on forums you visit, wherever. Tell the world about us. Oh, and the more creative, the better. If you do something wildly outlandish (like pulling up the site on every PC in Best Buy), send us proof.
  • Subscribe to any (or all) of our free magazine subscriptions. Each time you subscribe to something you haven’t subscribed for in the past, you are entered to win.
  • Do things we haven’t even thought of.

Now, we want you to tell us what it is you are doing to enter the contest. That is why we have set up this forum thread - when you do something, let us know. Did you Digg a Gear Live story? Let us know. Subscribe to a few magazines? Tell us. Plaster your cat with the Gear Live logo? Post pics. Let’s have some fun with this one guys. The contest will run through the end of August, and in the spirit of the whole word of mouth thing, we want at least ten people in the running. Of course, we expect a lot more than ten to enter, because - quite frankly - this one really is a giveaway. There is no limit to the number of times a person can enter - you are limited by your own time and imagination. Oh, and location, as you must have a US shipping address to be eligible to win.

Any questions? Ask in the forum. Good luck!

Xbox 360

Alright guys, a couple months back we asked you all to put your thinking caps on and design us a simple video game. Of course, we wouldn’t ask you to do something so daunting if there wasn’t something good in it for you - so we figured we would give someone an Xbox 360 for their troubles.

We had eleven entries into the contest (yup - just eleven!) and we gave each game a spin before determining the winner. If you want to check out the entries, you can download the following games, done exclusively in Visual Studio Express:

We want to thank everyone for their submissions - but we chose one game to walk away with the Xbox 360. Congrats to Forum member Dbone - we liked the work you put into the contest, and enjoyed the frustratingly fun Action Square game. We will be contacting your for your info, and you can expect one of those new Xbox 360s to hit your doorstep in the near future. See? Dreams really do come true.

If you didn’t win (or participate for that matter), you still have an opportunity to win our iRiver clix giveaway contest, which runs through August!

Google Maps

Google Maps HacksAlright peeps, I know you all remember that Google Maps Saved Me From A Traffic Ticket story we did last year right? In case you missed it, we used Google Maps - pulling it up while in a court of law - to show that a police officer was lying (or had a horrible memory) and that the ticket presented should be thrown out. Oh, and we won.

It appears the guys at O’Reilly took notice, as the story is featured in their book, Google Maps Hacks. If you are interested, the book features a bunch of unique uses and mashups of Google Maps, and can be purchased for $29.99 USD.

Xbox 360 Contest

Alright peeps, we have yet another opportunity for anyone out there to walk away with an Xbox 360, courtesy of Gear Live. We are looking to see what our readers can come up with in terms of creating a simple video game. We just made one ourselves, and despite not having any previous coding knowledge, we are pretty happy with the way Tennis Challenge turned out. Yeah, it may appear to be a Pong rip, but we made it our own. Now it’s your turn. Here is how it’s gonna go down:

  • Download the game we created in Visual Studio Express, Gear Live’s Tennis Challenge
  • Download Visual Studio Express. This also enters you in the Upgrade Your Game Sweepstakes.
  • Create a game from scratch, or edit one of the game templates that Visual Studio Express gives you.
  • Let us know about your game. Blog about it and link us to it. Let us know on our forums. All games will be made available for public download.
  • The contest ends on June 23, 2006, but seriously, it took us all of ten minutes to create Tennis Challenge. Of course, we want you to do better than we did.
  • We will choose a winner, and that person walks away with a brand new Xbox 360.

Now, this contest is open only to Gear Live members. Of course, signing up is completely free, and takes all of ten seconds. If you have a forum account, you are already a member. Now, go ahead and get to work on creating a game - we want to see just how creative you guys can be. Oh, and we have this extra Xbox 360 that needs a home.
