Walgreen's BillboardAs if Times Square isn’t garish enough, a new addition is being built. Standing 341 ft. tall and weighing 250,000 lb., the billboard will have 12 million LEDs (~17,000 sq. ft.) and sing the praises of Walgreen and its new 16,200 sq. ft. emporium. They are hoping that the store will be open and the billboard lit up by next fall, and estimate that it will be seen by 1.6 humans a day. We figure it is going to take a lot of $5.00 prescriptions to pay for the sign.

On my Mac Pro, the update is clocking in at 420 MB, so it’s a hefty one. That is understandable though, because there are quite a few fixes in this one. Some that stand out to us include things like improved reliability, screen sharing fixes, and a few Spaces improvements. We’ve got the full list for you after the break, if you are interested. Otherwise, fire up Software Update to get the latest and greatest.

Windows 7 disc layout 2

So, word on the street is that part of the first day of the All Things D conference tonight will be the unveiling of the first time of the Windows 7 operating system by Microsoft. To be clear, we shouldn’t expect Windows 7 any sooner than 2010. That said, what is shown is very much a work in progress. If you can’t wait for the video footage, which we are sure is soon to come, we also have a bunch of Windows 7 screenshots in our gallery.

We see a lot of concepts in these images. An expanded bar at the bottom of the screen, an -like dock, some sort of disc-based nav system that reminds of the OS, etc. Still, nice to see that things are progressing.

QR Coded TombstoneIf you live in Japan and want to remember a loved one in a special way, the stone processing company Ishinokoe will install cell phone QR codes inside a lockable tombstone door. The family member can then link it to videos and images of the deceased on Websites. When visitors to the site see the code, they can access them, too. They can also view a greeting from the chief mourner, check out the guest book, and note on it that they were there using their cell phones. The cost of the QR code is about ¥200,000 (~$1,935.00.)

PhoenixColor-Calibration Targets

We are pretty sure by now that everyone is aware of NASA’s Phoenix landing on Mars, but after looking at some early shots, we were amazed by the color. It seems that color-calibration targets, about the size of hockey pucks, have chips on them to determine exact hue that were designed by a University of Central Florida Physics and Astronomy Professor Dan Britt and two students. They also contain magnets that brush off excess dust. With those true colors revealed, researchers say they can help find out what makes up the terrain on the planet. We anxiously await the result that yes, there might have been someone up there at some time as evidenced by the possibility of water/ice.

Notebook GrillGrill folded

Every year we get the urge to find the most awesome barbecues for the summer cooking of the beasts, and Direct Design’s Notebook Portable Grill is our first entry. At a size of 18 x 14 x 12-inches and a weight of about 8 lbs., the grill has a 192 sq. inch surface and a stainless steel grate with a waterproof surface. When it is not cooking up your dinner, you can pack it flat to go. No frills, no plug-in USB, this is a simple design that does what it is supposed to. The barbecue comes with a one-year warranty at a price of $48.00.  If laptops continue to get smaller and thinner, we were thinking this would make a nifty carrier/desk top if cooking is too much of a challenge.
