We remember being completely satisfied when the GBA:SP was released with the front-lit TFT screen. After all, it meant no more dark pillaging in Metroid Fusion on the original GBA - that was a blessing. Recently, Nintendo stated that the Game Boy Micro would have the brightest, most vibrant screen of any of their handhelds. I guess that statement was true for a few weeks, as now it seems that honor goes back to the GBA:SP (although, the DS screen seems pretty vibrant to us.) The GBA:SP is now shipping with a backlit screen rather than the front-lit version, which is great news seeing how the change does not include a price hike. See, now this just rocks. Being that Nintendo has been using backlit screens since the DS launched, even including one in the Game Boy Micro, they finally decided to do away with the front lit TFTs in the GBA:SP. Although the company hasn’t hyped it - probably because they don’t want to stifle Micro sales - the GBA:SP now ships with a much improved backlit screen that to me looks even better than the screen on the Micro. Just take a look at the comparison picture above from IGN. The new screen certainly looks worlds better than the older one - and you can actually see what’s going on without squinting your eyes out, unlike the Micro. The best part of all this is that the GBA:SP still sells for the same price.

Firefox Hits 90,000,000 Downloads

The folks over at SpreadFirefox are announcing that the browser has reached the 90,000,000 download mark. Now, that is great and all, but what it doesn’t tell you is how many unique users have downloaded the browser. That is a figure that would be interesting. I, for one, have downloaded Firefox at least thirty times with the release of new versions and having multiple PCs. Still, it is a nice number to see.
On September 20, 2005 at 4:33:58 EST or 9:33:58 GMT Firefox Reached 90,000,000 Downloads! Only 10 Left and if we can get in before Nov. 9th then we would have 1,000,000 Downloads on the first day of 1.0 Release, 10,000,000 Downloads in the first month, and 100,000,000 in the first year!
I must say, since Opera went free, I have been using that way more.

It looks like Sennheiser has finally realized that iPod owners like people to know that they are carrying around iPods. This means that white earbuds or headphones are essential. That being the case, the company is now offering a few of their more popular portable device headphones in white. Our favorite of the bunch is the MX500w is an in-ear system with volume control built into the cable and a windup case to avoid clutter. The PX100 and PX200 are standard over-the-ear headphones, each with very nice sound reproduction, and go for $59.95 and $69.95 respectively.

Dell DJ Ditty Ditty-O’s Are Funny

Here at Gear Live we are big fans of “outside the box” thinking. Dell is rarely a company that impresses us, but this time they have made us chuckle - and that’s worth noticing. In a unique marketing campaign to get the word out on their new Dell DJ Ditty 512 MB flash MP3 player, Dell has created a website full of Dell Ditty-O’s. That is, comedic video segments where they almost poke fun at their player in an all-in-good-fun kind of way. I watched a few, and I must say, they are pretty darned good. Check them out.

I knew it was coming. When Opera was offering free registration codes for a day, but didn’t turn off the auto-generating code email address until way after the day was over, I sensed that it was going to become a freeware platform. The day has come, as Opera no longer had any integrated ad banners. I know, Firefox has been all the rage among the Internet elite, but I urge you to try Opera. It is blazingly fast, and just works. I have yet to experience an Opera browser crash, while Firefox blows up three or four times a day for me on both Windows and Mac OS’s.

This product doesn’t have the fanciest name but it is straight to the point. It functions as an emergency light - no surprise there. Alas, there are three other things you can do with this gadget. First, you can deter insects and mosquitoes with one light which is cool for camping tents and summer BBQs I suppose, you can deter mice with a different setting, and - most uniquely - you can charge the internal battery and use it to power things, like a laptop. That’s pretty neat.
