Gear Live Bleeding EdgeThis episode is packed with a ton of interviews that we shot at CES, including:

  • Major Nelson Interview: We had the opportunity to catch up with our friend Larry Hryb - Major Nelson to the layperson - to ask him about what his CES experience was like. Major had been pretty much tied to the Xbox area in the Microsoft booth, but he took a few minutes to talk to us about Fight Night 3, Dead Rising, and Street Fighter II on Xbox Live Arcade.
  • DualCor cPC: We have a look at the amazing DualCor cPC. This may turn out to be an OQO killer, as it is a handheld Windows XP computer that also runs Windows Mobile 5.0 on a separate processor, allowing the user to switch between the two OSes with the touch of an icon.
  • Netomat Hub Service: Netomat’s Hub is an online space where you can create “hubs” to get and share picture and text messages, as well as content such as news feeds and blogs with a friend or your own private group of friends. You and your friends can view and update your hubs using a PC or a mobile phone.
  • TiVo Series 3 First Look:We got some quality hands-on time with the forthcoming TiVo Series 3, TiVo’s first HD-capable DVR. The Series 3 unit has some cool new features, including a single-color, two-line OLED LCD display on the front of the unit that shows you what’s being recorded on each tuner. We interviewed Bob Pony of TiVo (TiVoPony on the TiVo Community forums) about what we can expect in the Series 3, so be sure to check out the video interview above. The quick and dirty is that it features built-in ethernet, an external SATA port for expanding your TiVo’s capacity, and that it will ship with a 250 GB hard drive.

Looks like a new startup is going to attempt to steal away some of Google’s Adsense members. The new company is called “Turn,” and will be led by Jim Barnett who served as Altavista’s CEO in the past. With $10,000,000 in startup capital, Turn just might have what it takes to make a dent. Of course, Yahoo! Publishing Network is already trying it’s hand at taking down Adsense, as will be MSN’s AdCenter once it hits the states. It’s a good time to be an Internet publisher. Turn will be located at Turn.com.

Woot Hard Drive

Just a quick heads up for those of you who appreciate a good deal. Today’s Woot! is a 250 GB Western Digital Caviar drive, selling for just $50 USD. Not too shabby, if we may say so ourselves. I almost bought one, when I realized that it wasn’t a SATA drive, and that it only has a 2 MB cache. Oh, and it’s refurbished. Still, $50 for 250 GB of storage is a rarity.

Kikizo PS3

The peeps over at Kikizo have somehow managed to get insider access at not one, but three PS3 developers.  This just may be the most comprehensive inside look and preview as to what Sony has in store with the PS3.  The article is a great read, but be forewarned - it’s lengthy.  If you have any interest at all in the PS3 and what could possibly be in store for us, we suggest you grab a Venti Cinnamon Dolce Latte at your local Starbucks and get comfy with a couch.

Connect 360

Heads up fellow Mac fans.  Are you one of the lucky ones with a tasty Xbox 360?  Does the lack of integration with your Mac have you down?  Well fret not, there is no need to run out and get a Windows Media Center box, Connect360 is here.

Connect360 automatically indexes your iTunes and iPhoto libraries and shares them to your Xbox 360. You can then use the Xbox 360 Dashboard to browse and play your media, organized in the exact same way that it is on your Mac.

Be advised that this is still in BETA, but you can grab your copy for free and if you want a real bargain, you can pay for the license now (only $10) and you’ll be good to go for version 1.0 without any price hike.  Requirements are:

  • Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later
  • An Xbox 360 with a network connection
  • iTunes for iTunes sharing (free download from Apple’s site)
  • iPhoto for iPhoto sharing (part of Apple’s iLife)

Description

For those of you who may have upgraded the hard drive in your laptop, or maybe just happen to have a spare 2.5” drive laying around, this is a great gadget to make good use of that drive.  Radtech’s Impact HD Enclosure offers maximum protection for your data by incorprating 64bit encryption via the use of a physical layer of security.  The drive enclosure offers a unique 64 bit encrpytion hardware key, which plugs in via a FW400 type of port.  The key works in real-time, so encrytion doesn’t affect performance.  The drive offers USB 2.0 and FireWire 800, although we personally would have like to see the FireWire 400 port which is more popular and found on most devices.  FireWire 800 just doesn’t seem to have caught on as well, which is evidenced by Apple’s recent launch of the MacBook Pro, which dropped the FireWire 800 port.

The Enova X-Wall engine provides real-time, hardware-based encryption and decryption. X-Wall shuttles encrypted data as fast as a standard enclosure.
Unlike easily circumvented and platform dependent software-based encryption, Impact enclosures strong encrypt (DES) every bit and byte on the hard drive. The included Secure Token is a physical key which must be present to read from, or write to the drive. Without the secure key, the drive and its data are rendered useless and unreadable - 2 keys are included with each enclosure.

The enclosure is made from a lightweight heat-dissipating 1mm thick extruded 6075 Aluminum alloy, and offers a decent amount of shock protection making this a pretty rugged drive with some corporate strength security to boot.  James Bond would be proud.  All the details can be found over on Jason O’grady’s PowerPage.

CinnarackSo you got that tight little Mac mini because you are a clutter freak and wanted to minimize what you have on your desktop.  Somehow, as small as the mini is, the mere sight of it is bugging the heck out of you, so you want to hide it even more.  Your wish has been granted by Cinnamon Peripherals with their CinnaRack for Mac mini.

The Mac mini is one of the smallest computer desktop ever made, but you can reclaim even more desktop space by mounting your Mac mini under your desk or under a shelf!

Now be forewarned, this is a limited edition prototype, and there will only be 50 made available for purchase.  Nonetheless, it looks like a decent product and is sure to be a hit with that minimalist crowd.

The CinnaRack for Mac mini is designed to allow maximum airflow for the Mac mini. If your computer is hanging in the air, why limit its air intakes to the sides, like on a desk?

This is a limited edition, production protype. It lacks the ability to connect to our future accessories but is available at a special discount price. It’s also the only Cinnamon Peripheral that will ever have our complete company name silkscreened on it. Grab a piece of history!

The CinnaRack for Mac mini production prototype is made from anodized aluminium to closely match the look of the Mac mini.

2007 Lotus Exige S

On Friday Lotus announced the new 2007 Lotus Exige S, the newest addition to their line of bad-to-the-bone overpriced go-karts.  This is one sweet looking ride folks.  With a 0-60mph time clocking in at 4.1 seconds, it makes this the fastest production Lotus to date. Fuel economy is an impressive and respectable 31mpg City / 39.2mpg on the highway.  For those of you in the UK, pricing is expected to chime in at £33,995.  For those of us in America, we will have to watch with envy as our friends across the pond enjoy the priviledge of ownership - this puppy will NOT be available in the US as of this writing.  More details and pics await at Leftlane News.
