A Finnish company called International Security Technology has come up with a breakthrough aimed at in home monitoring of elderly or critically ill patients. The Vivago is a wrist band with gyroscopic sensors and a transmitter than can communicate with a base station. The sensors monitor the wearers activity levels and can alert medical professionals if the wearer falls, or is acting lethargically. The Vivago also includes a panic button for emergencies. This sounds like an ideal solution for people not ill enough to require a nursing home, but unsteady and at high risk for falling. I can imagine this giving a family a great sense of security about any aging friends or relatives.

Debate Over Cost of Web-Surfing to Businesses
Posted by Alex Grahmann Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech,
Ken ?Caesar? Fisher, a writer for Arstechnica.com, is challenging recent claims made by Websense, a web-filtering service, on the amount of money lost by businesses due to employee web-surfing. Websense has reported that $178 billion dollars is lost every year, which works out to around $5000 per adult employee. However, Fisher points out several weaknesses in the wording and data produced by Websense, specifically that many of the conclusions are drawn from ?beliefs? of managers, rather than firm data. With the growing availability and usability of internet access in the workplace and such huge numbers being thrown around, any article which balances the story is worth the read.

A guy named Matt has successfully completed what is undoubtedly the world?s first home-brewed gummy bear that exceeds the previously-untouched 13 pound barrier. The gargantuan gummy creation required the use of an empty animal crackers bin, the sacrifice of thousands of regular-sized gummy bears, and what must have been pure commitment. In the midst of all the sad news nowadays about Rockstar?s production woes, MacWorld?s generally-accepted blandness, and overall degradation of our planet and people, it?s reassuring to see that there are some among us that are still able to reach for the confectionary stars.

The ST 5000 also includes a spirit level to aide in creating level structures for those wilderness adventures. Sadly with a feature list like this and no price listed on the press release I’m betting that if you have to ask how much this bad boy of a watch is you probably can’t afford one.

I know we all run into the problem of not being able to serve beer fast enough, so a company called Laminar Technologies has kindly provided us with a solution: The Turbo Tap. Turbo Tap works by changing the way the beer is pressurized and forced into the glass or pitcher. This means a perfect pour with a narrow collar of foam on each glass in less than two seconds. The website promises to make a bar more money by reducing spillage and helping to speed up busy beer bars. Whichever reader ends up buying one for their house - make sure to invite the Gear Live editors over so we can “review” it with you.

TiVo Tries New Form Of Interactive Commercials
Posted by Devin Categories: Home Entertainment, Misc. Tech,
TiVo knows that its customers skip commercials, and we’ve seen them try to get us involved in watching them by offering the “Thumbs Up” option on some commercials, allowing us learn more about a certain product, show, or movie simply by pressing the little green button. I can’t say I haven’t tried it once or twice merely to see what would happen when I pressed the button, but I can tell you for sure I most definitely won’t be trying TiVo’s latest form of interactive advertising. Soon, viewers will have the option of hitting a button during a commercial which will send their information to an advertising firm which will in turn add the viewer to a mailing list. No thanks TiVo…my mailbox is full of enough junk mail already.

Back to Basics has announced their egg and muffin toaster. It’s a simple - yet brilliant - fusion device that is able to toast an english muffin, poach an egg, and heat up a piece of ham all at the same time. I used to be addicted to these things, and as soon as it comes out I’ll have to plunk down the $49.95 for the convenience of popping in an egg, tossing in a muffin, and having a hot fresh breakfast ready in minutes with no effort.

How Google Maps Got Me Out Of A Traffic Ticket
Posted by Edwin Soto Categories: Features, Internet, Misc. Tech,
In January of this year, I was pulled over by a traffic officer for “disobeying a steady red”, a.k.a. running a red light. I pleaded “Not Guilty” to the charge, and today - nearly six months later – I went to court to find out the fate of my ticket violation. Check out how Google Maps saved me some serious cash - and points on my license!
