MacWorld 2008: Apple announces TIme Capsule Airport Extreme with built-in hard drive

During this morning’s MacWorld keynote, Apple announced a brand new router specifically meant for those of us running Leopard on Apple notebooks, called Time Capsule. Basically an Airport Extreme NAS, the Time Capsule router allows those running Leopard while connected over WiFi to run Time Machine. Currently, unless you use a back-end hack to enable WiFi backups, you have to plug and unplug your laptop to an external drive to run Time Machine backups. Time Capsule removes that requirement, thus making WiFi Time Machine backups simple. Of course, it comes at a price. A 500 GB Time Capsule retails for $299 USD, which a 1 TB version costs $499.

CES 2008: Ubicell Best Wireless Accessory

Samsung seems to be near the top of the heap in being noticed at this year’s CES, which has given it 32 awards. Included are 20 electronic and mobile products, 4 TVs, an MP3 player, Bluetooth speakers, a PC, a home theater system, and a frig. Among the prize-winning gadgets is the Ubicell in the Best of Wireless Handsets/Accessories category. This small base station is easy installation and will work with your existing mobile phone to give you indoor service. Samsung has more bragging rights posted on their site.

CES 2008: Slingbox PRO-HD

Sling Media, Inc. has announced the newest iteration of Slingbox. The Slingbox PRO-HD is capable of placeshifting over the air, cable, satellite and even DVR HD signals to a computer in the house. 

When the PRO-HD is used with a Slingcatcher, the PRO-HD will stream HD content in either 4:3 and 16:9 to another TV in the house, and when the PRO-HD and Slingcatcher are combined with an upload connection speed of 1.5 - 2Mbps, the PRO-HD will stream HD content to another television or computer anywhere, without down-converting the resolution to EDTV. 

Slingbox PRO-HD will be available in the 3rd quarter of 2008 with an estimated MSRP of $400.00. We will have some video up of this, along with the Slingcatcher, up on our CES 2008 video page.

CES 2008: Magellan Maestro Elite 5340+GPRS

Magellan has premiered their newest GPS unit for autos, the 5340+GPRS, the first GPS unit with Google Local Search.  Users can search their area for events, businesses and services, receiving real-time results from Google based upon the user’s current location or a specified location.

The wireless GPRS service also enables the unit to deliver up-to-the-minute information on traffic and weather.  Additionally, users planning trips in advance can send addresses or other information directly to the unit using the wireless service.  In case a change to an itinerary is needed while the trip is in progress, third parties can send changes to the unit using the Magellan website.

Like the rest of the recently-introduced Elite line, the 5340+GPRS features voice command, a USB port and 6 million points of interest.  It also features a 533 MHZ S-Media 3362 processor and and a 5-inch WQVGA widescreen.  The Maestro 5340+GPRS will be available for puchase in March for and estimated $1299. CES 2008: MOTOROKR Wins Best Headphones

Winner of the Best Innovation in Headphones went to the MOTOROKR S9. Okay, they look a little weird, but the Bluetooth 2.0 phones weigh only about an ounce with 13mm speakers. The S9 is compatible with most phones and iPods with optional adapter and one button switchability. If you get a call when you are digging your tunes, the music will pause. A charge will last you up to 6 hrs. of play time and the phones are sweat and water resistant for the necessary times when you have to make a mad dash for the bus. CES 2008: Logitech Squeezebox Duet Network Music System

Building on their line of Squeezebox and Transporter music network devices, Logitech is introducing the Squeezebox Duet.  Consisting of a brand new controller with a full-color 2.4 inch LCD screen and a receiver that utilizes 802.11g, the Duet allows users to stream music from any computer to any room with an audio setup in the house, browse their music collection, and view album art.

When the Squeezebox Duet’s receiver is registered, users can even use the receiver and remote to browse Internet radio stations, subscription-based music services, and music that the user has uploaded to the open-source SqueezeNetwork, no computer required.  Additional receivers can be added in order to control the music in every room in the house, separately or synced so that every room is playing the same thing.  For people already using the Squeezebox (and Transporter) system, controllers can be purchased alone and integrated into an existing network.

Squeezebox Duet will be released this month and will retail for $400.  Individual receivers will retail for $150, and standalone controllers will retail for $300.

Westinghouse To Release Wireless HDTV

Westinghouse will soon be revealing the first integrated HDTV. The display features Pulse~LINK’s integrated CWave UWB HDMI technology that will stream audio and video content from DVRs, Blu-ray or HD-DVD players using its JPEG2000 video codec.

Bruce Watkins, Pulse~LINK President and CEO says, “Watching this Westinghouse Digital HDTV – with no antennas or dongles or anything coming out of it except the power cord and a vibrant High Definition image – is an experience much like watching true High Definition for the first time. As soon as they see it, people will want this Wireless HDMI HDTV in their living room.”

Appearing at the CES next week, we will see if the masses are as impressed as Mr. Watkins.
