Box Office Breakdown: The Possession Enthralls Moviegoers

Though we're still a few months out from Halloween, people apparently like to be scared year-round. Even when it means paying money towards a film that looks like every other movie about an exorcism.
Either way, filmmakers of The Possession have done something right, as the movie has taken a hold of the number one spot at the box office this weekend, pulling in $17.7 million. The Tom Hardy and Shia LaBeouf vehicle - penned by Nick Cave - Lawless debuted at number two with $9.6 million while The Expendables 2 dropped two spots from last week's top spot with $8.8 million. The Bourne Legacy, starring Jeremy Renner in the latest Bourne installment, also dropped two slots from last week's number two spot with $7.2 million while the animated family film ParaNorman rounds out the top five with $6.5 million.

Box Office Breakdown: Bourne Takes Down the Dark Knight

With a little help from the Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis comedy The Campaign, the latest Bourne film -- which sees Jeremy Renner replace Matt Damon in the starring role -- The Bourne Legacy was able to make its way past The Dark Knight Rises to the top of the box office this past weekend with $40.2 million.
Ferrell's political comedy debuted in second place with $27.4 million, bumping last week's number one, The Dark Knight Rises, to number three with $19.5 million. The Meryl Streep romantic comedy Hope Springs debuted at number four with $15.6 million while Diary of Wimpy Kid: Dog Days slipped two spots to number five with $8.2 million.
