Weekend Reading: Comic Con International, Gene Colan and The Inferior Five

DC Logo 1Apparently, there’s some kind of comic book thing going on in San Diego. I hope enough people show up and it catches on. I never get tired of hearing jokes like that!

The talk of the convention – or I should say one of the talks of the convention – is that DC is getting ready to make the move to the West Coast where its big daddy Warner Bros. is located. It makes a lot of sense, from a dollars-and-cents pov. You can get a lot done faster if your comic book resources are right next door to your movie resources and you don’t have to fly everyone out for meetings or Skype 10 times a day. More importantly, if DC’s on the Warner lot or in a building that Warner is already paying for, they could eliminate the overhead on their NY offices (which could be a huge annual chunk of bucks). And since corporations routinely operate this way, it’d be a sneaky way to have mass layoffs of the people who can’t or won’t go and get rid of any entrenched deadwood that’d be too hard to dismiss without cause.

Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Interviews, Movies, Marvel Comics,

Olivia Munn as the Wasp?Geeks all over are abound with glee this weekend to read that G4 host Olivia Munn will possibly be donning wings for .

An e-mail sent by an “old, fairly reliable” source reveals that Munn is set to portray the wealthy Janet Van Dyne, a.k.a. The Wasp.

It has been confirmed in July 2009 that director had cast Munn in a cameo. Until recently, when the actress admitted that her cameo fell victim to editing Hell and was given another role. So we know that she has a part—it’s simply a guessing game at this point. Can she pull off the heavy shoes of an Avenger?

With some minor screen time in the Steve Carrell and Tina Fey comedy, and now a role in Iron Man 2, this former model is definitely making her name known in the film industry lately.

Quote of the Day: Jeff Bridges on Lack of Iron Man Script

Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Movies, Marvel Comics,

Jeff Bridges as Obidiah Stane in Iron Man

“They had no script, man. They had an outline. We would show up for big scenes every day and we wouldn’t know what we were going to say. We would have to go into our trailer and work on this scene and call up writers on the phone, ‘You got any ideas?’ Meanwhile the crew is tapping their foot on the stage waiting for us to come on… So I said, ‘Oh, what we’re doing here, we’re making a $200 million student film. We’re all just f—-in’ around! We’re playin’. Oh, great!’ That took all the pressure off. ‘Oh, just jam, man, just play.’ And it turned out great!”

- Actor Jeff Bridges, who portrayed Obidiah Stane/War Monger, on filming the initial Iron Man movie.

Buffy Season 8 Comic Book Gets Web Series

Buffy Season 8 comics

Buffy the Vampire Slayer gets a second chance! Well, sort of.

Not to be confused at all with the rumored Buffy reboot by the rapacious Kuzuis, it has been reported that Joss Whedon‘s Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight comic books will be translated into a motion-comic web series.

No word yet as to whether or not original cast members from the television series will appear, but casting director Jeff Shuter is already looking for voice actors to fill familiar and new roles. If you sound like Sarah Michelle Gellar or D.B. Woodside, this gig may be for you—check out the complete cast list after the jump (they’re looking for non-union).

While this good news comes after Dollhouse‘s cancellation, I have my doubts.

John Cusack Possibly Aiming For Preacher Role

Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Movies, DC Comics,

John Cusack aiming to be in Preacher?I know that it’s been quite awhile, but remember how Sam Mendes saw a script for the film adaptation of Preacher? Apparently John Cusack wants in on it, and he seems like a pretty smart dude to be doing so.

When doing his interview rounds for 2012, Cusack was asked about if he would consider doing a comic book film (‘cause, you know, everyone’s a superhero these days). Despite his lackluster response (or knowledge) of comic books, he equivocally spoke about a film that he had been chasing that sounded awfully familiar.

“Yeah, I can [see certain comic books being made into film], there was one or two that I heard of that sounded really cool. One of them was about, I think… it’s a vampire and a killer, and they’re on the road, and it’s this really strange story. I thought that sounded pretty cool. Also some of the obscure ones, I don’t know if there are any more superheroes left… I think it might have been Preacher.”

When asked which character he would wish to portray, he said “either the vampire or the priest. One of those two guys.”

I don’t know about you, but I think that he’d make an amazing Arseface.
