Quote Of The Day: Timothy Truman

Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials,

Grateful Dead Comix 2In case you've been wondering what Timothy Truman's been up to lately:

“Got a call from Grateful Dead Productions yesterday. They've asked to paint the covers for all 4 CDs of the 2013 run of the new 'Dave's Picks' series. Needless to say, I accepted! Will be doing 5 covers altogether -- 1 each quarter plus a cover for the bonus editions. Yep, purty cool gig! This week: cover for the last issue of Jeff Lamire's Vertigo comics series, Sweet Tooth & wrapping up the script for King Conan: The Hour of the Dragon issue 2. Next week: a cover for IDW's Judge Dredd & another for a special Joe Kubert Tribute issue of Comic Book Creator magazine.”

Weekend Reading: Jack Kirby, Alex Toth, Harlan Ellison & Argo

Argo

I am shocked - shocked, I tell you - to discover that the movie Argo (about how Jack Kirby’s designs for a screenplay based on a Roger Zelazny novel helped rescue hostages in Iran for the CIA) is playing fast and loose with history.

Michael Sporn has a long post with some nice artwork by Playboy cartoonist Rowland B. Wilson and some rare artwork by Alex Toth.

Down The Tubes interviews Paul Scoones, author of the new Doctor Who book: The Comic Strip Companion: The Unofficial and Unauthorised Guide to Doctor Who in Comics: 1964 — 1979.

Comic Book Jobs: Rebellion (UK)

Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials, Independent,

2000 AD“I Am The Law...of Human Resources!”

Rebellion, the British publisher of 2000 AD (home of Judge Dredd) and many other great British Comics) is in a hiring mood for the holidays.

Unfortunately, they aren’t looking for a new body to fill the Judge’s suit. They want a PR Coordinator.

You’ll be covering “PR and Marketing for all aspects of the publishing sides of the business.” This includes “the famous Sci-Fi comic 2000 AD and Sci-Fi/Fantasy book imprints Abaddon and Solaris, as well as some for the renowned computer games.”

Comics, books, games? This sounds like I’ve washed up on the shore of Fanboy Island!

You’ll be writing press releases, fielding incoming media inquiries, maintaining those all-important social media contacts, plus research and tracking.

Rebellion only wants you if you can (1) provide samples suitable to their needs and more importantly (2) “legally work in the UK.”

Good luck, job seekers!

BRITISH COMICS: 2000AD Prog 1643: Judge Dredd & Zombies!

1643
Whenever I’m in London, which is where I am this week, I like to check out the local comic books. And I don’t mean the repackaged American comics that Marvel does, or the magazine-sized comic books like Star Trek and Terminator: Salvation that feature quizzes, puzzles and games inbetween a repackaged American comic. (Although the UK Star Trek comic does a very nice job of repackaging IDW’s Star Trek comic with an assortment of photos and features on the new movie.) I’m talking about the stuff the Brits do for themselves, specifically for the newsstand. Stuff like…Judge Dredd.

I’ve been a casual Judge Dredd fan for years. Back in the 90s, I worked my way through the collections from Titan Books with all that great Brian Bolland and Mike McMahon artwork, I read the DC Comics mini-series and I saw the godawful Judge Dredd movie with Sylvester Stallone and Rob Schneider. So I have some familiarity with the Judge and his colleagues, which led me to pick up 2000 AD, Prog 1643 from July 8, 2009.

The cover is a nice zombie-baby horror from Leigh Gallagher, tying into this issue’s final story.
