Comic Book Jobs: ILM, Lucasfilm And USC

There are a bunch of interesting, and decidedly off-the-beaten-path jobs out there and some of them have only a tenuous connection to comics, but I like them nonetheless. Let’s take a look:

Industrial Light and Magic is looking to fill several positions, and while they’re not technically comic book jobs, they are for artists in the following areas: Animation (Character), Animation (Cloth), Animation (Facial), Animation (FX), Animation (Hair/Fur/Skin), Animation (Traditional), Compositing / Lighting / Image Processing, Lighting, Matchmoving and Rotoscoping. I think they’re too spiffy not to pass along.

USC is looking for an animation director or artist for the role of University Professor for their John C Hench Division of Animation and Digital Arts. USC, by the way, is the University of Southern California, where it's nice and warm and sunny.

Comic Book Jobs: Marvel Studios Interns

Marvel Studios, the movie-and-TV division of the vast Marvel Comics empire, is on the prowl for a new season’s worth of interns.

These are part-time, unpaid positions, 20-30 hours per week and involve things like script coverage, internet and comic book research, “typical office duties,” and quick errands (I’m guessing coffee, dry cleaning and picking up comics at the LCS on Wednesdays).

But since this is part of Marvel, you’ll be reading early scripts for Marvel’s upcoming movies and shows, reading comic books and surfing the interwebs. How bad can any of that be?

Marvel Studios is responsible for for the Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four movies, as well as the upcoming Avengers and Thor so there's really no cooler place to want to work right now. Departments looking for interns include: Film Development, Marketing, Legal, Animation and Interactive.

Comic Book Jobs: Viz Media Interns

Interning is a great way to pick up some business skills while you’re in school and get some college credit. Interning at a publishing company is a great way to figure out if you have any interest in getting involved in the business that helps you clutter up your bookshelves with books and your iPads with downloads.

Acclaimed manga publisher and anime company Viz Media, in San Francisco, is taking applications for their 2011 Spring Intern program and there’s no time like the present to get those applications in.

Viz has part-time internships available in a variety of departments including: Animation Production; Consumer Marketing; Consumer Products & Approvals; Design Intern; Editorial; Information Technology; Magazines; Publishing Licensing; Sales & Retail Development; and Web Production.

But those positions won't last for long, so brush up the resume with all your Starbucks and McDonald's experience and get it over there.

Comic Book Jobs: Checking Out Craigslist

Teachers, interns, extras don’t sound like comic book jobs, and yet here they are. Let’s take a look at some Los Angeles-based opportunities.

Think Now Education is looking for part-time teachers for “after school programs” in the Inglewood Unified School District in Los Angeles. One of the classes you could be teaching? Reading Graphic Novels. Another one? Making Comic Books.

A Los Angeles-based comic book publisher “in the mid-Wilshire district” is looking for an unpaid intern for their design department. Got to love comics, designs that pop and creating excellent book jackets. No pay, except the usual college credit.

A movie based on an “Action Comic Book” needs extras of all types, ages and ethnicities for an L.A.-based shoot for scenes in a baseball stadium, airport, and subway. There is pay, they say!

Comic Book Jobs: Checking Out Craigslist

As regular readers know, I’m a lover of Craigslist and its many opportunities that sound just like employment. Here are a few recent ones:

Are you an actor who can play “normal” in a superhero world? Mild Mannered is a new live action superhero web series, and they’re casting. “Mild Mannered is a story about a group of normal people attempting to live their lives in the midst of a fantastical comic book world as best they can.”

If you’d like to pursue your acting career on the other coast, there’s a company looking for a male actor to star in a “fantasy website catering to comic book fans.” You’ll be “acting out comic book style stories while dressed in super hero/villain costumes.” But your face’ll be covered up in case you want to keep your involvement a secret. There’s no nudity, but it’s “a very active role where there will be simulated fighting/wrestling choreography” and some “implied sensuality and simulated fighting/wrestling,” during the one day six-hour shoot.

Comic Book Jobs: Manga, Interns & Call Centers! Oh My!

Comic book jobs are never easy to find, but here are three that look, well, different.

Anarchy Management is a “management company that represents writers/directors and independent comic book publishers.” They need an intern to do coverage and make development notes – from home – and if you do well, you’ll get invited to meetings with production companies as management’s sidekick. Alas, college credit only.

According to this odd little website called Bilingual Manga, a comic book company is looking for freelance manga artists, who are “Japanese, English, French, (or) Chinese,” and who don’t have “too much sex & violence.” If your samples can pass through their application process, then you could land an assignment from them. Payment “depends on skills, genre.”

Comic Book Jobs? Interns @ Tor Books

Want to break in to big-time New York City book publishing while it still exists?

Tor Books, the big genre publisher, is looking for two, count ‘em two, editorial interns for Fall 2010. You may get college credit, but it is a paid internship. That’s right, money in your pocket. Tor does it right, aside from just publishing great books.

Tor publishes John Scalzi, George R.R. Martin, the Heavy Metal Pulp titles, Heinlein, Charlie Stross, Larry Niven (one of the founders of the Ultraverse), F. Paul Wilson (Repairman Jack), and dozens of others.

Tor interns will “gain insight into the process of publishing a book at every stage, from acquisition and contracts through production and, finally, the finished product.”

That might horrify you, of course, or maybe it’ll thrill you. Tor has a strong online presence and a nice website with lots of extras, so they’re preparing well for a future that could be sans paper. They’re even hosting a series of posts by veteran Marvel and DC scripter (and novelist and also an Ultraverse founder) Steve Englehart.

Comic Book Jobs: Marvel, Viz, Tokyopop and Time Warner Interns

If you want to break into comics via by following the traditional corporate path instead of freelancing, you might try your luck at being an intern.

There’s usually no money involved, you can get some college credit and you’ll be doing important comic book work like getting coffee for the office or picking up someone’s dry cleaning.

But you’ll get to see how a comic book company works from inside its cubicles and that will either thrill you or horrify you. Companies often hire from their old intern pool when staff jobs become available so this is also a way in, should you do a good job, impress the heck out of the right people, and network like all those books tell you.

Viz Media, the San Franciso-based manga and anime company has a 2010 Fall Internship Program bursting with part-time opportunity in a number of departments: Animation Production, Design, Editorial, Information Technology, Licensing, Magazines, PR & Marketing, and Sales & Retail Development.

Comic Book Jobs: Checking Out Craigslist

I love checking out Craigslist. It’s like channel-surfing with classified ads. You can always find interesting things, and before you know it, several hours of your day have vanished. Let’s see what comic book jobs are out there:

In New York, A.P.N.G. Enterprises has a “bold comic book series” called New-Gen, which they’re rolling out “for multiple platforms including movies, TV, video games and of course more comics, distributed by Marvel.”

And they need a couple of interns for three-months, rewarded with college credit. Specifically, they want “people who know and have a passion for comic books and science fiction to help us get the word out about the world of New-Gen.”

If you’re up on the social media apps, and aren’t afraid to go old-school by handing out fliers or working their booth at the New York Comic Con in October, poke your resume over there.
