Broadway Spider-Man Plagued With More Troubles: Lead Actress Leaves
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music,

Ill-fated just doesn’t seem strong enough language to describe the series of troubles that have plagued the Broadway version of one of Marvel’s most successful franchises.
Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has been repeatedly delayed, run far over-budget and suffered a series of catastrophes that left some cast members injured. Now, the production has a new problem: Actress Natalie Mendoza has walked away.
Mendoza -- who played Arachne, an evil love interest to the spandex-clad hero -- recently suffered a concussion during last month’s preview performance, and now she says she will not stay with the production. “It has been a difficult decision to make, but I regret that I am unable to continue on Spider-Man as I recover from my injury,” she offered in a statement.

She talks to cameras openly about her experiences on Broadway, explains that she’s still “a normal kid,” and remains poised and engaging throughout.
Documentary filmmakers Louis Alvarez and Andrew Kolker recall the young Lea Michele in brief asides, remarking that she had a “thousand-watt personality.”
“I can do anything and that’s how I kind of stay sane in this really tough, dog-eat-dog business,” she explains. It took 10 years, but the Emmy-nominated actress has managed to convince many that her words are true: she really can do anything.

The contract also includes an option to create a Broadway show based upon the series, and offers are flying at him from every direction.
Amy Pascal, of Sony, says she’ll “do anything Ryan wants” in order to get the show going. Gossip says that Murphy is also in consideration to direct a film version of Wicked, the successful Broadway play which was adapted from the book.

Academy Award-nominated Abigail Breslin will be following in Patty Duke’s footsteps. The actress, 13, will soon be starring in the first Broadway revival of The Miracle Worker as Helen Keller. Duke originally played the role on Broadway and in the subsequent movie (for which she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar, the youngest actress ever to receive the honor at that time).
Breslin is the fourth-youngest actress ever to receive the Academy nomination; she was selected for the award thanks to her work in Little Miss Sunshine.
“I am so honored,” she said of receiving the Broadway role. “It’s like the biggest thing in the world…I’ve always known the story, and it’s always been something I wanted to play.”
