Touch Sight Camera for the Visually Impaired
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Design, Science

What a unique idea. Designers Chueh Lee and team from Samsung, China came up with Touch Sight, a digital camera for the visually impaired. The cam records sound when the shutter button is pressed and can be used as a reference for managing the photos. The device has a lightweight Braille display sheet with a 3D image instead of an LCD. Once taken, the images can be down or uploaded for sharing. The team discovered that the forehead is the best place for this device to aim and stabilize. We can’t wait to see the results if the prototype becomes reality.

We wish that GreenHouse had photographed these earbuds with a head so we could have seen just how ludicrous they look when in actual use. The Buta Earphones go in one ear and out the other and were designed to cut out extraneous noise. They have an impedance of 16 ohms, a playback frequency of 20Hz-20KHz, weigh only 17 grams, and have a 0.9m cable. Available in small, medium, and large, and in colors of pink, white, and black, you can pick up a pair for $35.99.

I-Jerry Makes Music Sitting Down
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Accessories, Design, Misc. Tech, Music, Portable Audio / Video
Made by I-Mu, I-Jerry is a rodent-like MP3 Player with 1 GB memory. Control him by the ear, and get ready for his bottom which, when placed on a surface, turns it into a speaker. The company also features an i-Pig, an i-Bird, and a basic design that does the same thing, but we have to admit we are partial to the mouse. Visit the i-Mu site and find out there is more to music than sound, it’s a philosophy. Expect an arrival later this year at a $99.00 price.

The Gear Live crew got the only private listening session of the newly-announced Beats by Dr. Dre headphones during CES, and our thoughts are in this episode. Be sure to check out our other Beats by Dr. Dre video, and our Beats by Dr. Dre photo gallery.
I’m what you would refer to as a cost-sensitive buyer. I’m obsessive about value propositions with my purchases. And I would buy the $400 Beats by Dr. Dre headphones by Dre & Monster Cable.
We got a private demo with Monster and had the opportunity to listen to what’s amounted to more than two years of obsessive research and attention to detail. All the materials, the drivers, the amplifier and more are clearly thought out and it shows. The response from these is absolutely incredible. Their intent was to allow you to listen to the music as the producer intended and dare I say it’s as faithful reproduction as you’ll find on a $400 set of headphones. It’s enough that I would buy these before buying the nearest-priced Logitech system for my computer. The bass response was impressive to the Nth—low bass held its tonal quality through a great deal of dynamic range, something not usually seen. The midrange was rich and warm and perfectly presented and the high ends came out just as well.
I’m sad because I really want these. I mean, I was upset that I had to go home tomorrow to my sound system, and that it’s nothing close to how these performed. They were comfortable, sexy, and sounded absolutely incredible.
Try these when they come out in June. But only if you’re prepared to buy them.

Sound System Keeps to Itself

Chan-Hui Lee and his team at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology purport that someday we will be able to listen to music within a Personal Sound System that will not bother others standing outside it. Their prototype features 9 1/2-inch speakers arranged in a row. They found that there was a 20 decibel difference between the center and the outside, comparable to a regular conversation and a whisper. Lee foresees the technology being utilized eventually for cell phones and PDAs. We would just settle for using it on the neighbors’ backyard barbecues.

Britney’s Worst Nightmare: Tengu Lip Syncs Everything
Posted by Jenny Lewis Categories: Accessories, USB, Toys
Sometimes, sitting at my desk all alone at night, I wish I had some company. Someone I can interact with for a moment, then get back to work. Someone who doesn’t demand all of my attention, just a little diversion to clear my head. I do believe I have found that someone, and Tengu is his/her/it’s name.
A little buddy to plug into a USB port, Tengu reacts to sound. It lip syncs to everything from the music playing in the room to TV to the dog’s bark. Granted, there’s a little bit of a learning curve when it comes to things like music and voices, but as we all have witnessed, it seems everyone has a little bit of a learning curve when it comes to things like that.
Tengu is available now for $58.

In this age of iTunes and illegal downloading, it’s a cinch these days to completely fill up you MP3 player or cell phone with music. What to do?
