Acer Liquid Glow: Ice Cream Sandwich, NFC, 3.7-inch display

Acer has announced that its Liquid Glow smartphone will be running Google's Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich right out of the gate. The phone features a 5 megapixel camera, a 3.7-inch display, and NFC capabilities, allowing users to exchange data with other NFC-enabled phones. The Liquid Glow will be available in the summer, and is the first of Acer's smartphones to hit the market.

Huawei Ascend D: World’s fastest quad-core smartphone clocks in at 1.5GHz

Apple, HTC, Samsung, and Sony are some of the leading smartphone manufacturers out there, and leave slim or no chance at all for new faces to join the market. However, once in awhile, just like a one-hit-wonder song hits the radio waves, a great phone from outlier manufacturer can make people take notice. Right now, Huawei is such a company.
Huawei is a leading a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider that is aiming to get into the smartphone game. During Mobile World Congress, Huawei introduced the world’s fastest quad-core smart phone, the Huawei Ascend D. The company is also known for producing the world’s slimmest smartphone, the Huawei Ascend P1 S.

HTC One X featuring Beats Audio set to hit AT&T stores

AT&T will finally be graced with a phone featuring Beats Audio by Dr. Dre. The HTC One X is set to hit store selves within a few months. The phone features a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED 720p high definition display, alongside an 8-megapixel camera and running HTC’s Sense 4 running atop Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The superphone is powered by a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor. The only downside to the AT&T version of the smartphone is that it is a dual-core processor rather than a quad-core. United States buyer will be losing two cores to accommodate for a 4G LTE radio. But hey, we’re not complaining. For those in want of the quad-core model, you can always import one from Europe, we guess.

Leaked images of LG Optimus 3D successor CX2

Thanks to Pocket Now, we have our first look at what is rumored to be the successor to the LG Optimus 3D, currently known as the CX2. From initial information and pictures, the new phone is not much better than the Optimus 3D, having what seems to be a higher focus on form factor rather than function. With an upgraded CPU that goes from 1.0 GHz dual core to 1.2 GHz dual core, and with 8 GB of internal storage, there is not much difference between the two phones in the hardware department.
The thickness of the device, as it stands right now, is 0.39 inches. That's considerably less than the Optimus 3D at 0.47 inches. The width of the display on the CX2 is around 4.7 inches, which matches the original specifications, although it is said that LG swapped out the original display panel for a brighter one. The last morsel of knowledge that we have right now is that the device will, by default, be running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. We can hope to find out more about this phone next month at the Mobile World Conference.
Twitter CEO: There will be no Twitter phone

The media seems fixated on branded phones. Google phones, Facebook phones, Twitter phones. For the companies, it make a lot of sense. A place like Facebook, where many people already spend a large amount of their web time browsing that site, would love to have your whole mobile experience encompassed in their own service. Just last week, INQ announced that they will make such a phone for Facebook. It's another story for users however, which may be weary of using a phone that is dependant on a single service. This Monday at the Mobile World Congress, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo answered a question by saying that Twitter had no plan to ever do a Twitter phone, and that the very concept was not what the company was about. He said "Twitter already works on every device you’re going to hear about this week. Tweets flow seamlessly across platforms; that’s what we’re trying to accomplish." He compared Twitter with water, which is everywhere, forgotten, but available in many ways.

Unlimited Skype calling comes to Verizon next month

We are loving how mobile wireless carriers in the US seem to be opening up their previously locked down networks. First, AT&T allows 3G access to SlingPlayer Mobile, and now Verizon Wireless has just announced that they will allow unlimited Skype calling over 3G from their smartphones, starting next month. All you need is a smartphone with data plan, and you can both make and receive Skype-to-Skype voice calls right on your phone over 3G. You’ll also be able to use Skype Out, instant messaging, and remain online in the background to stay connected to the service. At launch, unlimited Skype services will be available on nine Verizon handsets, and you can take a look at the full list after the break.

So, aside from that Windows Phone 7 Series keynote video, we thought you might want a condensed version that will allow you to just take a look at what all this Windows Phone 7 fuss is all about. Microsoft took the liberty of putting together this much shorter demo video to explain. Here you can get a look at all of the design elements and decisions that have gone into Windows Phone 7, which fundamentally set it apart from other mobile operating systems on the market. Here’s a quick rundown:
- Every Windows Phone 7 device will have three physical buttons on the front: Start, Search, and Back.
- There’s a focus on productivity, simplicity, music, and gaming. Both Xbox Live and Zune are deeply integrated into Windows Phone 7.
- People hub: Pulls in live data feeds, bringing you social networking status updates and photos from services like Facebook, Twitter, and Windows Live.
- Pictures hub: Brings together picture and video assets from your phone, web, and PC, allowing you to view your entire collection.
- Games hub: Check out your Xbox Live messages, achievements, avatar, and even play some games. Achievements can be earned on the phone.
- Office hub: Access to Microsoft Office suite, including OneNote and SharePoint Workspace. Also includes new version of Outlook Mobile for email.
This is definitely the biggest step that Microsoft has taken in the mobile phone space, and they do it over three years after Apple announced the original iPhone. The competition is heating up, and we are super-excited about it.
Windows Phone 7 Series keynote video

The big news today is the announcements of Windows Phone 7 Series over at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and Microsoft has released video of the announcement and reveal of their new mobile OS. Let it be said right now, Microsoft has essentially killed what we all know as Windows Mobile, and has replaced it with what may, in fact, be the slickest interface we’ve seen on a mobile phone. They borrowed heavily from the Zune HD navigation scheme, but made it highly polished and optimized for a device that is constantly connected to a cellular data connection. Also, it looks like that whole Xbox Live Anywhere demo that we saw at E3 a few years ago is finally coming to fruition, as Windows Phone 7 Series includes Xbox Live gaming built right in. Hit the play button on the videoafter the jump for a look at everything, but color us impressed.

Google Shows Off Android Run Prototype

This week during the GSMA’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Google showed off its software platform Android for cell phones in solid form. Acquired in 2005 and launched last year, the company rounded up a team to show how it may look. They also announced the formation of the Open Handset Alliance, 34 handset manufacturers, carriers and chipmakers that will support Android. Based on open-source coding, Google is counting on the prototype to give the competition, including Microsoft, Nokia, and RIM a run for their money. Hooray for free enterprise.
