Samsung Onyx: A premium 4K HDR movie theater experience

Samsung Onyx Cinema Screen

Earlier this week, Samsung invited me to spend a day in Vegas to attend CinemaCon, where the company was announcing it’s line of Samsung Onyx 4K LED movie theater displays. CinemaCon is the largest gathering of movie theater owners in the world, where seemingly anyone who’s anyone in the movie industry can be found, making this the perfect place to show off trailers and extended previews of upcoming movies, as well as movie theater tech. This made CinemaCon the perfect place for Samsung to debut the Onyx.

Formerly known as Samsung LED Cinema Displays, the easiest way to describe the rebranded Samsung Onyx is to liken it to the high-end flagship 4K HDR displays that you can buy for your home, but on a much grander scale. What this means is you get a crisp 4K picture, you get the insane dynamic range from the HDR luminance, and you get the high contrast thanks to the True Black capabilities.

Universal Orlando Cabin in the Woods

When Universal Orlando busts out the Halloween Horror Nights, it gets serious. Horror fans descend upon the theme park in droves each year to experience in-your-face scares each fall. This year? The park is working with director Drew Goddard to bring The Cabin in the Woods to life. Like, for real.

"We are building the cabin completely. You’re going to walk through a forest to get there. You’re going into the cabin. You’re going to go into the cube cells. We’re literally taking everything we can in the film and giving you a kind of best-of montage of the film with this kind of linking story,” Universal Orlando Entertainment Team member Michael Aiello tells Zap2it. “You’re going to be in the control room when merman attacks."

As guests make their way through the cabin maze, they'll be a part of the story with plot points from the movie being incorporated. You know that merman is gonna be ridiculopus. This is gonna be intensely awesome.

Jamie Foxx Electro

The Amazing Spider Man 2 is in the midst of filming, and we are now getting our first look at Electro (Maxwell Dillon,) played by Jamie Foxx. As you can see in the image, Foxx is almost unrecognizable, having been painted in a luminescent blue color with colored contact lenses as well. Those small LED lights that line Foxx's hood make his "skin" glow, which you can see in the image after the break. The photos were snapped in New York City's Times Square. The Amazing Spider Man 2 is set for a Spring 2014 release.

DC Comics Presents: Django Unchained

django unchainedYou’ve seen the movie, and you’ve heard all the chatter, but did you know there’s also a comic book adaptation of Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained?

It’s a five-part Vertigo series out from DC Comics. It's written by Django producer Reginald Hudlin and illustrated by R.M. Guera. The first issue boasted a cover by Jim Lee.

The whole thing is edited by my pal Jim Chadwick out of DC’s west coast office. He knows how to put together a snappy comic book.

Here’s Wired talking about it.

Here’s a nice review of the first issue.

And here’s how you can get your own copy.

Remember, the “D” is silent.

Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One Collection back on sale, release date confirmed

Posted by John Kilhefner Categories: Home Entertainment, Movies,

It's been a long time coming for patiently waiting Marvel fans, but the 10-disc Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One - Avengers Assembled Blu-ray collection set is finally slated for release on April 2nd. The collection had previously been delayed by lawsuit, leaving Amazon to pacify pre-orderers with free copies of The Avengers.

Originally, the collection was to come with a S.H.I.E.L.D. briefcase, but that has since been scrapped due to the aforementioned licensing issue. It will, however, come with a suitcase featuring a glowing Tesseract on the inside. Also, thanks to the delay, the collection will have a few new extras, such as an early Iron Man 3 preview and the second phase of films. But with extra content comes extra financial responsibility, as the price is now $219 at retail--but you can preorder it for $197.10 on Amazon, saving yourself 10%.
