Google Fiber is coming to Austin, Texas
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Broadband, Corporate News, Google, Internet,
Google Fiber is officially coming to Austin, Texas, giving people yet another reason to want to live in the edgy city. Google has not yet revealed the rollout schedule, but don't let that fool you--they'll likely be splitting the city up into different "Fiberhoods" like what happened in Kansas City, Kansas and Missouri in order to gauge the areas of highest interest. Google Fiber offers 1 Gbps broadband Internet, television service, and phone service through a direct fiber to the home connection. This marks the thirs city that Google Fiber is making an appearance in, as Google's Eric Schmidt recently said that Fiber is a "real business"--here's hoping we see quick expansion to additional neighborhoods in the US.

Drobo 5N provides up to 20TB of fast, protected network storage
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Storage,
If you were interested in the Drobo 5D, but wanted something a bit more network-friendly, the newly-announced Drobo 5N might just be your cup of tea. Built on the same architecture as the 5D, the Drobo 5N does away with the Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 ports and instead opts for a gigabit Ethernet port instead, giving all the devices on your local network access to the file storage array. You can pack up to five 3.5-inch drives into the chassis, as well as an mSATA SSD to make things even faster. All in all, you get a maximum capacity of 20TB. Not too shabby. The Drobo 5N is set to start shipping tomorrow, and will cost $599.

Google Fiber to bring 1000 Mbps speeds, TV, free Internet to Kansas City
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Broadband, Corporate News, Google, Home Entertainment, Internet,
Today Google finally took the wraps off of its long-awaited Google Fiber service. Focusing on Kansas City, Google Fiber is both an Internet service and television service, and Google showed off just how awesome the service will be.
First, the Internet speeds. Google Fiber provides gigabit speeds both up and down the pipe. That's 1000/1000 Mbps (which makes our 35/35 connection look atrocious.) The company detailed how far behind the USA is in terms of speed and pricing, and is looking to invoke some major change. Google Fiber Internet will also come with 1TB of Google Drive cloud storage, and there will be no bandwidth caps or overage fees. But that's not all…

Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock picks up USB 3.0, eSATA ports
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Accessories, Apple, PC / Laptop, Peripherals,
If you thought the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock looked good before, wait until you hear about the pre-launch upgrades it's just picked up. It still packs in the dual Thunderbolt ports, FireWire 800, Gigabit Ethernet, and audio in and out. Now, though, it will also include an eSATA port, as well as three USB 3.0 ports as well. That new goodness comes with a higher price tag though, as the dock wil now cost $399 (rather than the previously-announced $299) at launch. It'll be available next month directly from Belkin.

Google looking to test fiber Internet at gigabit speeds for up to 500,000 people
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Broadband, Google, Internet,
Oh, hello there, crazy drool-worthy and inexpensive ultra high-speed Internet from Google! Yeah, that’s right, Google is looking to launch an experimental, ultra high-speed broadband network in a small number of trial locations across the United States. We are talking about Gigiabit fiber to the home speeds here. The only thing that currently comes close is Verizon FiOS, and their current download speed tops out at 50 megabits per second. Gigabit would be 1000 megabits (or, 128 MB) per second, which is just insultingly fast. Even better? They want to launch it at inexpensive prices in the launch/test cities. So, why would they do this, and what would be the benefit?
First, competition. Google wants to bring the price down while bringing the service level up, and they are putting their money where their mouth is and challenging other ISPs right on their home turf. If you had a choice between crazy-fast Google Internet and sucky Comcast, you’d likely end up going with Google in a heartbeat, since it’s like 200x faster, and less expensive. Second, Google is getting into the web apps business hard. It would be ideal for them for web applications and native desktop applications to have no difference in speed, and you can bet that they’d be deploying these tests to optimize the hell out of their web app products. Make no mistake, they want Google Docs to run just as fast in your browser as Microsoft Word runs when you launch it on your local machine.
We love this, and despite having a 50/20 FiOS connection, we want it badly. Google, bring this to Seattle, k?

Apple Airport Extreme Receives Gigabit Treatment
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Broadband, PC / Laptop, Wireless / WiFi,
When Apple released the new Airport Extreme back in January, we complained about the lack of gigabit Ethernet ports. After all, if you are gonna call the thing “Extreme”, you should make sure that the title fits, right? Well, fast forward to seven months later, Apple has finally updated their Airport Extreme 802.11n Base Station with gigabit ports. Here at Gear Live HQ, we have wired gigabit running through the place, so this is a very welcome change from our perspective. The price of the Airport Extreme remains at $179 USD.
