iPad mini: 7.9-inch display, A5 chip, LTE optional, $329

iPad mini

Apple has announced the long awaited iPad mini. It sports a 7.9-inch display at 1024 x 768 resolution, matching up with the iPad 2. The new iPad mini is just 7.2mm thin, and weighs in at .68 pounds. It features the same anodized edges that you'll find on the iPhone 5. On the inside you'll find the A5 processor, 5-megapixel rear camera that records in 1080p, and a FaceTime HD camera up front. With the 7.9-inch display, you get 35% more screen real estate than you'd find on the 7-inch Kindle Fire or Nexus 7 tablets, which is likely what Apple is hoping you realize since they are charging quite a bit more for the iPad mini than competing 7-inch tablets.  You'll be able to get a Black & Slate or White & Silver iPad mini starting at $329 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model, and the price jumps up to $429 for 32GB, and $529 for 64GB. Want an LTE model? Those come at an extra $130, so you are looking at $459 for 16GB LTE, $559 for 32GB LTE, and $659 for 64GB LTE. You'll be able to pre-order the iPad mini beginning on October 26, and they'll be delivered (and available in stores) on November 2.

iPad mini leak

Apple is set to reveal the iPad mini to the world at this morning's iPad mini event, but it looks like the device may have been caught on camera shortly before Apple got started! Check out the video above from ETrade Supply. These are the same guys who leaked a video of the iPhone 5 design weeks before it was announced by Apple, and they were spot on. What do you think? iPad mini November 2

Geeky Gadgets is reporting that it's received a report from a UK-based retailer that the iPad mini is set to launch on November 2 in North America and the UK. Further, pre-orders for the smaller iPad tablet should begin on October 26th, three days after Apple's iPad mini event is held in San Jose, California. The November 2 date just makes sense--it's 10 days after the Apple event, and it's a Friday, which is typically how Apple rolls with these kinds of hardware releases. So, if you're interested in picking up one of the new iPad mini units, it looks like November 2 is your day.

Apple sends invites out for October 23 iPad mini event

iPad mini event invite

Right as the Microsoft Surface tablet went on sale for pre-order, Apple sent out invites to it's next press event, where it will reveal the 7.85-inch iPad mini to the world. It's also heavily rumored that a new 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display will also be a part of the festivities, as well as an updated Mac mini, and maybe even new iMacs (finally!) As always, we'll have live coverage of everything that goes down, so keep it locked right here on Tuesday at 10:00am PT, where Apple will show off its new hotness from the California Theatre in San Jose.

Leaked iPad Mini Battery

MacRumors has obtained photos of what is reported to be the internal battery for the upcoming iPad mini. As indicated by the battery's marking of 3.72 volts, the battery life on the 7.85-inch iPad is expected to be between an iPhone and fully sized new iPad, 16.7 Whr of juice on 4490 mAh of charge. As a disclaimer, we can't yet authenticate if the leaked part is legitimately from Apple, but based on other Apple-designed batteries, it has the familiar markings of past and current products. The battery is still in regulatory limbo, and is subject to be changed if needed.

The iPad mini is rumored to be unveiled on October 23rd. How's that for doubling down on secrecy?

AllThingsD: Apple will announce iPad mini on October 23

Posted by Jason Diaz Categories: Apple, Handhelds, Rumors,

iPad mini October 23

AllThingsD is reporting that it's been informed by "people familiar with Apple plans", by which they might mean Apple PR, that an invite-only event is being held for October 23rd for the much-rumored  and highly-anticipated iPad mini. The report also speculates that the event will be held at a smaller venue like Apple's Town Hall. The timing makes sense since the new revamped user interface iTunes was promised by Apple to be released at an unspecified date in October. Likewise, it is a perfect competitive maneuver against the Microsoft Surface Tablet which is slated to launch on the 26th.

The iPad Mini is rumored to house a 7.85-inch IPS display with the same resolution of the iPad 2 and a new Lightning connector. The starting price is expected be around $199-249. Details of the wireless connectivity are vague, yet some are speculating it will be Wi-Fi-only, forgoing a cellular option. If I were a betting man, the iPad mini will be very thin, light, easy for one-handed use and perfectly sized as a stocking stuffer for the upcoming holiday shopping season. In addition, AllThingsD has a good track record forecasting past Apple events. So, fingers crossed.

iPad mini may not offer cellular option, relegated to Wi-Fi only?

iPad mini wi-fi

Apple's current worst-kept secret is the impending announcement and arrival of the iPad mini, a 7.85-inch version of the world's most popular tablet. What we don't know are all the details like price or specific features. The current rumor being circulated is that the iPad mini will be available in a Wi-Fi-only configuration, with no cellular option. We're on the fence on this one. On one hand, leaving out the LTE chip allows Apple to price these competitively without making the top-end model cost more than the entry-level new iPad. This keeps things more in line with the $199 price points of the Kindle Fire HD and Google Nexus 7 tablets. However, having cellular in the iPad mini seems to be the killer setup. Just slide one into your suit jacket pocket and you have portable tablet connectivity on the go. We know plenty of people who would happily pay the additional $130 above the iPad price tag for the LTE option. I guess those folks can always tether, right?

What’s your prediction? Will the iPad mini be offered with a cellular option? Apple has reportedly ordered 10 million iPad mini units from its suppliers, so it looks like the company expects this one to be huge.

Invitations for Apple iPad mini event going out on October 10?

Posted by Jason Diaz Categories: Apple, Handhelds, Rumors,

iPad mini

Fortune is reporting that it has received word from a "major Apple investor" that press invitations will go out on October 10th for Apple's much rumored iPad Mini event, hot on the heels of the release of the iPhone 5. The iPad mini is said to sport a 7.85-inch display with thinner side bezels. Mock-ups have appeared on YouTube of the upcoming mini tablet, which is prepped to go up against the newer crop of smaller tablets like the recently released Amazon Kindle Fire HD and Google Nexus 7. We'd say this is perfect timing, as the holiday shopping season is right around the corner.

Rumored iPad mini design detailed in images

iPad mini design

Nowhere Else is at it again, this time publishing a few images that show the alleged design of the upcoming iPad mini, that being the heavily-rumored 7.85-inch version of the Apple tablet. We must point out that the device certainly doesn't look to be an actual product, but rather something simply based on the rumored design specifications. That said, it looks pretty nice, no? Apple is expected to reveal the 7.85-inch iPad sometime next month, as it's dedicating tomorrow to the iPhone 5 unveiling.

Next-generation iPhone to be announced September 12, iPad mini in October?

Apple mini ipad 2012

For the past few weeks, we figured that Apple would be unveiling both its next-generation iPhone 5 as well as a 7.85-inch iPad at the same event on September 12. We thought it made sense that the company would introduce its new iOS devices all at once, but Daring Fireball's John Gruber theorized that a simultaneous unveiling might not be in the cards because then the two devices would steal each other's thunder, so to speak.
