Box Office Breakdown: ‘Man of Steel’ Soars Above ‘This Is the End’

Zack Snyder's latest Superman reboot, Man of Steel, was one of the most anticipated films of this summer - and it definitely delivered for Warner Bros.
Bringing in $113 million from the weekend earned the Christopher Nolan-produced flick the record opening for June, beating out Toy Story 3 ($110.3 million). Coming in second with $20.5 million was the debut of the Seth Rogen apocalyptic comedy This Is the End. Now You See Me stayed put at number three with $10.3 million while Fast & Furious 6 fell two spots to number four with $9.4 million. The Purge took the greatest dive, falling from the top spot last week to number five with $8.2 million.

Box Office Breakdown: ‘The Purge’ Slays Competition

Though it might not have made as big of a killing at the box office as Iron Man 3 or Star Trek Into Darkness, The Purge made it to the top of its box office weekend with $36.3 million, successfully bumping Fast & Furious 6 off its two-week stint at number one.
The latest installment of the Fast & Furious franchise garnered $19.7 million, while the magician thriller Now You See Me also fell one spot to number three with $19.5 million. For the return of Wedding Crashers duo Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, their newest comedy The Internship didn't fair too well, debuting at number four with $18.1 million. Epic stayed put at number five with $12.1 million.

More folks preferred thrill to laughs this Memorial Day weekend, pushing Fast & Furious 6 to number one at the box office over The Hangover: Part III.
The car-centric thriller garnered $98.5 million, while the finale to The Hangover series placed second with $42.4 million (both films debuted this weekend). Star Trek Into Darkness fell two spots from number one, having only earned $38 million. The animated family film Epic also hit theaters for the first time this weekend, placing fourth with $34.2 million. Finally, Iron Man 3 placed fifth with $19.4 million, having dropped two places from last week.

Box Office Breakdown: ‘Iron Man’ Falls, ‘Star Trek’ Rises to Number One

Though Star Trek Into Darkness didn't hit theaters as impressively as Iron Man 3 did two weeks ago, it still fared well garnering $70.5 million.
Despite holding the top spot for two consecutive weeks, Iron Man 3 came in second with $35.1 million while both The Great Gatsby and Pain and Gain also fell one spot to numbers three and four with $23.4 million and $3.1 million, respectively. The Croods, however, fared well, moving up two spots from number seven to number five with $2.7 million.

Star Trek 2 Plot Not ‘Solidified’

Zachary Quinto has revealed the plot to Star Trek 2 is not yet "solidified."
The actor - who plays the role of Vulcan character Spock in the sci-fi sequel - admits the director J.J. Abrams has not completely finished creating the storyline to the film, which he thinks is "great."
"What you guys are going to see has yet to be solidified, decided and defined and that's the great part about working with someone who is so mind-bogglingly talented as J.J. Abrams," he told E! News.
The movie - which also stars Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana and newcomers Benedict Cumberbatch and Alice Eve - has been filming for a number of weeks, and the 34-year-old hunk adds the schedule has been gruelling but enjoyable: "It's been a really overwhelming schedule, but in all the right ways. I love to work hard and I'm certainly doing that right now."
Very little is known about the script of the film, but it is believed Sherlock actor Benedict will be playing a villainous role after he was pictured in a fight scene with Spock.

J.J. Abrams believes it will be his fault if Star Trek 2 is not a success. The director - who returns to the sci-fi franchise for the follow-up to the hugely successful 2009 film - admits the script by Damon Lindelof, Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman is "amazing" and it is up to him to make it into a decent movie.
"It's a little early to be talking about Star Trek, but I will say that they wrote, the three writers Damon, Bob and Alex, they wrote the most amazing script and I'm thrilled to get a chance to direct it. It's totally mine to screw up, so if you don't like it, it's completely on me. Our sets are almost done, so we're going to go back and start shooting next month."
He also revealed the movie will not be shot with special 3-D cameras but instead converted in post-production. "We're shooting on film, 2-D, and then we'll do a good high-end conversion like the Harry Potter movie and all that. Luckily, with our release date now we have the months needed to do it right because if you rush it, it never looks good."
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana are all returning to the film, which is set for release in 2013.
Benicio Del Toro Pulls Out of Star Trek 2

Benicio Del Toro has pulled out of negotiations to appear in Star Trek 2.
The Wolfman actor was in talks to play the lead bad guy in the forthcoming J.J. Abrams-directed sequel - starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana - but "monetary issues" have ended chances of him starring. Although no details of who the character is have so far been leaked, NYPost.com's Vulture blog claims he was set to play Khan Noonien-Singh in the much-hyped project.
The character - a genetically engineered super-human - originally appeared in the original Star Trek TV series and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and was played by Ricardo Montalban. No actors have been named as possible successors to Benicio, but with the film due to begin shooting in January a replacement will have to be found shortly.
The sequel is set to be shot in 3-D by director J.J., while Alice Eve - best known for the role of the Irish nanny in Sex and the City 2 - is signed up to star.

Sorry Trekkies. Although we were previously lead to believe that filming on the Star Trek sequel would begin early next year, that apparently is not true. According to one of the main actors, a start date has not yet been determined.
“We have a while until we’re gonna do another one. It probably won’t be until next year at this time,” Zachary Quinto told MTV at Comic-Con. “I know there’s erroneous reports that we’re going back in January. Not true, as far as I know.”

Twister: Actor Bill Paxton recently expressed interest in doing another Twister film. Question is: is anyone else interested? (Aside from the Balloon Boy family?) Bill believes 3-D technology and a history angle could bring added elements to the disaster story. “I think you’d still want to have a lot of the dark humor and all of that, with the flying cows and everything. I think you could kind of intrigue people more by getting into a little more of the lore and really understanding. I just think there’s a lot more to explore there,” Paxton said.

J.J. Abrams Wants to Work with Nimoy Again

Leonard Nimoy is likely to return for the next Star Trek movie. Although the veteran actor recently said he didn’t think he’d be invited back, director J.J. Abrams is having a hard time envisioning the sequel without him.
“I can’t imagine a Star Trek movie not needing Leonard. I’m sure that what he’s saying is a combination of modesty and honesty. He may actually feel that way. But, the truth is, we could never have made this movie without him, and working with him again would be a joy,” the filmmaker said. “It is clearly too early, given that we are just now talking story, to conclude whether or not Spock Prime is in the film or not. Do I want to work with him again? Of course, 100%. I’d love to.”
The director also admits he is open to the possibility of bringing back characters from the original sci-fi series, but doesn’t want to run the risk of alienating new fans. “In going forward, the fun of this movie series is that we will have the opportunity, given its alternate timeline, to cross paths with any of the experiences, places and characters that existed in the original series, but we have to be really careful, doing that,” he added to Collder.com.
Abrams added: “I don’t want to do something that is so inside that only die-hard fans will appreciate. We’re just now working on the script and just beginning the process of story breaking, but I guarantee you, whatever the story is and whatever the final movie ends up being, I know it will be something that will work on its own terms and be something that you don’t need to know and study Star Trek to get, but if you are a fan, there will hopefully be gift after gift of connections, references and characters that you hold near and dear. At least, that’s the intent.”
