Kickstarter: Build-O-Saurs

Build-O-SaursDinosaurs Vs. Dump Trucks! When it comes to moving earth, my vote’s with the dinosaurs, especially the ones called Build-o-saurs.

My pal, animation writer Richard Clark, created Build-o-saurs as an interactive book app. He’s Kickstartering to raise the necessary cash to make it a reality.

“They’re not machines,” Richard says, “they’re just special dinosaurs who are born to build!”

And they look cool, too. Clark, and his creative partner, artist and animator Richard Murray, have created delightful kid-friendly dinosaurs that look like they want to dig, crunch and get dirty on the job site. I’ve got young kids and they loved the character designs.

Comic Book Jobs: Nelvana

NelvanaDo you love the animated cartoons? Of course you do.

This isn’t technically a comic book job, but if you have some comic book skills, you could handle it. Nelvana, the Canadian animation powerhouse, is looking for an Art/Design Coordinator for one of their animated series (name unknown, for now). It’s a 12-month position, which isn’t bad in the world of television animation. You’ll report to the Art Director and be “responsible for providing administrative assistance to the Design and Art team” on the series.

What does that mean?

Just the following: “Provide administrative support to Art Director, Assistant Art Director, Design Supervisor; Act as a liaison for all activities relating to the Art/Design Teams; Review Scripts/Boards to prepare Design Lists,” and quite a bit more in terms of administrative and managerial.

Comic Book Jobs: Cartoon Network

Adventure TimeCartoon Network, the home of Adventure Time, Ben 10, and Scooby Doo, is looking for some helping for the Spring.

It’s all part of their Spring 2012 Intern Program. It’s 12 weeks, 15-20 hours per week. No money, and course credit is optional (it helps if you’re somehow majoring in Animation or a related field).

You’ll be doing all the usual (and occasionally horrible) intern tasks, but you’ll be jumping into the deep end of the animation pool. Cartoon Network’s Internship Program “exposes students to a variety of duties and provides valuable knowledge of the industry. Students may have the opportunity to learn and observe a number of functions within the production department. They will be exposed to all aspects of a traditionally animated series.

Weekend Reading: The Damned, Apes, Simpsons and Tex Avery

Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials, Reviews, Television, Independent,

The Sixth GunHurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, power outages. It's been a wild couple of climate change-enhanced weeks. Let's play catch-up across the internets:

Cullen Bunn is having a career year and let’s hope it’s the first of many. The creator of The Sixth Gun got his Oni Press series, The Damned, picked up by Showtime for a series. He’s already gotten The Sixth Gun optioned to SyFy for a series. If they both make it to air, Bunn will have two more shows on the air than DC Comics.

Apes: Rich Handley reviews the fourth issue of Darryl Gregory and Carlos Magno’s Planet Of The Apes, from Boom! “BOOM!’s Apes run stands on a pinnacle, one sure to end badly for humanity.” But all good for readers and fans.

Republicans: My pal Doug Molitor from Funny Or Die looks at 12 Republican super-heroes. My favorite? The Human Torturer!

Jack: Man, that’s a lot of nice Jack Davis work that Michael Sporn posted. I really love those western covers, too.

In round 2, they've narrowed the field to 10 1-minute animated shorts by a host of creative folks - if you love the short cartoons and want to see some terrific animation in a variety of styles get over to their website and watch and vote.

And feel free to vote for Dave Barton Thomas' short, Kissing Gramma. He's a friend of mine, he won last year, and we have a project together - not this one - that we're hoping goes somewhere.

Comic Book Jobs: Checking Out Craigslist

Jimmy KimmelLet’s take a look at the job offerings on my favorite employment-based website.

Do you have a bit of Alex Trebek or Jimmy Kimmel lurking inside you? Well, they’d like it back. Oh, wait. No, there’s a production company that’s looking for a host for the pilot of their new comic book show.

A different TV pilot, this one in New York, needs extras for a fight scene between a superhero and a super-villain.

Do you play music? Do you have a band? You could be chosen to be on the soundtrack for a comic book mini-series.

Hound Comics has a deal for the blogging community involving Miami Wizard World 2011 and some press credentials.

An “established and award-winning production company” is looking for an artist to create a style guide for their upcoming animated series.

And finally, the call is out in Canada for “Female Ninjas.”

Good luck, job seekers!
