Could Oprah Winfrey do for what she does for books?

This coming Monday, the talk show hostess and her upswept hair will dedicate the entire broadcast to a particular decade. The show, entitled “Oprah Goes Back in Time: The 60s,” will include appearances from both January Jones and .

The hour will also feature items that would have been Winfrey’s favorite during that time. (I’m guessing the audience won’t want any of those freebies.)

Maybe Oprah could have Dr. Phil talk to Don Draper about his daddy issues and extramarital affairs?

Mad Men Returns in July to AMC

If you’re looking for a little more substance this summer, look no further than . The network that just recently renewed the superb Breaking Bad will be bringing back another gem: Mad Men.

The drama revolves around a Madison Avenue advertising firm during the 1960s. Although many of the storylines feel quite familiar (office politics, cheating husbands, unfulfilled wives, catty workers), the show’s period element is what distinguishes it from the rest. It’s hard to imagine a time when smoking and drinking were so prevalent in the workplace, when doctors could deny women birth control and when therapy was almost a joke.

Come July 20, AMC will allow viewers a chance to catch up on the Golden Globe-winning series by airing a convenient marathon. A week later, returns with thirteen all-new episodes.

Another New Twist for American Idol

American Idol judges and hostThis year’s has offered new twists, a few surprises and a change of pace from previous seasons. But if you thought all this newness would stop at Hollywood Week, you’re in for some shock during Tuesday night’s first actual performance round.

For the first time, contestants (the men perform Tuesday, women Wednesday) will sing themed songs, choosing from a list given to them beforehand. Wait…that sounds exactly like previous setups. But here’s how it’s been done in the past: contestants are given a CD chock-full of hundreds of songs which fit the night’s theme. If a song the contestant digs fits the theme but isn’t on the CD, that’s okay too.

Not this week. Twenty-four contestants will be given fifty songs. And they’ve got to pick one of them. For the first week, its 1960’s. Producers of the show say this is to avoid bad song selections (you wish) and to speed up the song selection process.
