Glee’s Rocky Horror Show Thrills, Chills and Fulfills

We’ve been talking about the Rocky Horror-themed episode of Glee for weeks, and Tuesday night the suspense finally ended.

All those burning questions -- who would play Dr. Frank-N-Furter, when will John Stamos perform, what will Sue Sylvester say about it all -- were answered. Keep reading for the full spoiler alert/review ...

It wasn’t exactly Glee’s version of the movie Rocky Horror Picture Show, nor was it a frame-by-frame remake of the best scenes from the film. It was classic Glee, set to the music of Rocky Horror. Story lines progressed, our favorite characters shined through … and let’s face it, the singing was awesome.

The episode opened, naturally, with a pair of lips (Naya Rivera) singing “Science Fiction/Double Feature.” Everything got better from there. Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) and Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) kicked the episode off with “Over at the Frankenstein Place” but the number was quickly interrupted by Dr. Carl (John Stamos) dressed as Eddie. The story then backtracked and took us to the beginning of how all this came to be.

The writers managed to give us both everything we love about Glee and The Rocky Horror Picture Show all at once. Gleeks got to have their cake and eat it, too … and the cake was covered with icing. And his name was John Stamos.

The actor’s performance of “Whatever Happened to Saturday Night?” was immediately satisfying, though perhaps not as fantastic as Emma Pillbury (Jayma Mays) singing “Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch Me" while seduing Will Schuester.

As is the usual case with Glee, the show was filled with fantastic little treats. Meat Loaf and Barry Bostwick (Eddie and Brad in the original film version of Rocky Horror) guest-starred as two TV cable execs who want to use Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) to help spread fear. Clearly she’s the perfect choice for such a task. In this way, the Glee writers managed to address the current spirit of heavy fear mongering in the media -- in a funny way, of course. Through the discomfort that Finn and Sam (Chord Overstreet) were feeling, they also touched briefly on teenage body-image issues, a subject that's rife with possibility and one the show has dealt with before.

The highlight of the night came in the form of Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley) as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a twist casting decision that no one saw coming (until the album was releases six days ago...). Amber absolutely killed "Sweet Transvestite," and we loved her costuming.

Sparks definitely flew between Will (Matthew Morrison) and Emma during her number, though Dr. Carl quickly confronted Will over his (attempted) lady-stealing actions. It’s a perfect time for a new, sexy substitute teacher to shake things up … don’t you think?

The Rocky Horror Glee Show was packed with jokes, great music and enough plot to get us through a long two weeks without another new episode. In the meantime, we’ve got to get to work carving a Sue Sylvester jack-o-lantern.
