American Idol 8: Top 5 Results

The eighth season of is winding down, which means the competition is heating up. “I have your results!” Ryan Seacrest promised at the top of the hour, touting 47 million votes and an evening filled with drama.

“Everybody was good,” said of the preceding performance round, which occurred the night before the results show.

The same could not be said of the terrible Ford music video, which was again marked by bad choreography and poor cinematography. The Top 5 then performed a medley of “I Don’t Mean a Thing” and “I Got Rhythm.” I still didn’t get to hear “Swingin’ on a Star.” The Top 5 group performance was, in a word, awful. It was boring, the song choices were bad and the choreography was decidedly lackluster after last week’s highly entertaining performance.

The Idol contestant clip of the week showed the Top 5 in the kitchen, who attempted to make birthday cakes for celebrants Allison Iraheta and Danny Gokey. A horrendous mess ensued. then gave Gokey a gift - a bill from Best Bets Maid Service, LLC. They charged $6,000 for the disaster in the kitchen. “You mean American Idol doesn’t take care of that?” Danny quipped.

The smiles stopped when the Idols lined up on stage, however. Ryan turned to Matt Giraud first. Giraud was then moved to the right side of the stage, and Seacrest turned to Danny Gokey. This contestant was moved to the left of the stage…and the plot thickens.

Allison Iraheta was addressed next. She moved to stand next to Danny - a very good sign indeed. Ryan turned his attentions on Kris Allen - and all the ladies hooted. Kris Allen moved to stand with Giraud.

It was Adam Lambert’s turn in the spotlight. If he were to be placed in either group, it would be a dead giveaway - this group is safe. Seacrest asked Lambert where he thought he should stand. “I love everybody,” Lambert hemmed and hawed. “Based on last night, probably that group,” he pointed to Allison and Danny. This was an honest answer but that doesn’t make it the right one - a particular conundrum in today’s society. What Adam should have said was “I’d be proud to stand with any of them,” though the reality is that we all knew he would be joining Gokey and Iraheta.

Ryan Seacrest allowed Lambert to stand with the aforementioned pair before he bodily changed Adam’s position - Lambert was placed in the bottom three with Matt Giraud and Kris Allen! This little shocking turn of events wouldn’t be the first surprise of the evening.

Allison and Danny gazed at each other in open-mouthed surprise to find they were the top two vote-getters of the week. What a startling change of position this is. “It’s crazy,” mused. “You are five bright and shining star,” she told them, and whoever is styling Paula Abdul lately is making all the right decisions.

“There’s only five people left, and someone’s got to go,” Simon Cowell said, reminding everyone not to take the victory away from Allison and Danny. “Whatever happens, all five of you are unbelievably talented,” offered some encouragement.

Natalie Cole

t appeared on the Idol stage to sing “Something’s Gotta Give,” which incidentally is also the title of Marilyn Monroe’s last movie (unreleased). Nat King’s daughter looked and sounded great for Rat Pack week, wearing a gold grown and a big sile. I felt the cut on her frock could have been better, but overall she was more entertaining than some of the terrible guest performers Idol has had this season.

Taylor Hicks

then made a grand return to Idol, singing “Seven Mile Breakdown” and playing the electric guitar. The Soul Patrol returned to Idol and offered up what I thought was a fairly boring performance, but then again I never liked Taylor - not during his season or afterward or anything else. I’m also unsure on what genre I’d call him, too. He’s not that country but he definitely doesn’t rock, and the days of B.B. King being cool are long gone. There was a lot going on with that song - from guitar picking to violins to harmonica playing. It was exhausting. He was, however, very pleasant during his bit with Ryan Seacrest. He told this year’s Idols to be themselves, have confidence and work on their craft.

On that note, the week’s bottom three was brought out on stage. After a few tense moments Kris Allen - and not Adam Lambert - was moved to the safe group. This left only Adam Lambert and Matt Giraud standing on the Idol stage.

I knew that ill-used judges’ save would come back to haunt us. It was absolutely astounding to see Adam standing there in danger of being eliminated - his performance was so great, it made me completely forget everyone else. Could this be a case of being way too good?

Jamie Foxx

, the week’s mentor and definitely one of the best Idol has ever had, then appeared to sing a song of his, of which I didn’t catch the name. He had a lot of effects on his voice, a black outfit and there was nothing about any of it that I could understand. I love Jamie Foxx, and I happen to know that he can sing with the best of them…but this performance was anything but good. The sound was off, much of the dancing was unnecessary and it was just all bad. Or maybe I’m just not a fan of hip hop.

During his talk with Seacrest, Foxx remarked on the talent of Idol’s Top 5. “These people are true artists,” he praised. Ryan called Adam and Matt to the stage. Seacrest asked Foxx what he thought of this particular pair as the bottom two. Foxx responded with a plug for his latest flick.

Ryan Seacrest turned to Simon Cowell, saying he might have miss-called the performances from the night before. “One week out of twelve isn’t bad,” Cowell neatly turned aside the criticism.

Finally Adam Lambert was pronounced safe, leaving Matt Giraud standing on the stage alone. This conclusion was, of course, inevitable. Giraud himself looked very upset during his exit clip, Carrie Underwood belting in the background behind him. “It’s definitely not the last time you’ll see me,” Giraud warned.

Matt Giraud

And with that, Matt took his final turn in the Idol spotlight - and it’s about time. Song choice. Paula Abdul offered some encouraging words when his performance was finally over. She called him “one of the most remarkable talents.” “I have been a fan,” told him. “Continue to make it hot, Matt!” Randy Jackson advised. “Don’t listen to me,” Simon Cowell told him.

Next week, American Idol will return with the final four contenders of the season - very heady stuff indeed.
