Albert Pujols sets spring training deadline

Albert Pujols, arguably the best player in baseball, has given the St. Louis Cardinals a deadline of spring training in order to get his contract situation settled. Pujols will be playing in his final contract year with the Cardinals when the 2011 MLB season begins. Reportedly, Pujols will test free agency should the extension not happen by spring training, but the Cardinals would be crazy not to. However, if it happens, Pujols would be in high demand as he is still only 30 years old and a perennial Triple Crown threat.

Jays win, Halladay loses…not your typical headline

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Roy HalladayThe Blue Jays got their first taste of an opposing Roy Halladay on Wednesday when they made the short trip from Dunedin to Bright House Field in Clearwater. The Jays showed their appreciation for Halladay and his new Philly uniform by swatting balls left and right, touching up the ace starter for four runs in the first inning alone. However, Halladay was able to pick himself up in the show why he’s one of the best by striking out three batters in the second.

Ruiz, Bautista battling for playing time in Toronto

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Randy RuizIt’s almost time for managers to select their 25-man rosters. We’re less than two weeks away from Opening Day, and still several teams have tough choices to make at various positions. The Toronto Blue Jays are no exception. In a season that many expect to be a write-off before the first pitch is thrown, the Jays have the opportunity to really test the depth of their organization. One such battle for playing time comes in the form of first baseman/designated hitter Randy Ruiz and third baseman/outfielder Jose Bautista.

Yankees sub-.500 spring not scaring anybody

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Derek JeterThe New York Yankees are under .500 in Spring Training. Cleveland and San Francisco sit on top of the Cactus League, while the Dodgers, Angels and Mariners are all struggling for wins. Is there any cause for concern here? Of course not. Everybody knows that the standings don’t matter in the Spring. You don’t get an edge by winning the Grapefruit League or the Cactus League. There’s no incentive to having the best record. Everybody is 0-0 again on Opening Day.

Sorting out the Spring

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: MLB,

Cincinnati RedsThe arrival of Spring Training ushers in the season it is named for. It’s an exciting time of year for sports, as it is once again time for baseball. Florida and Arizona play host to well over a thousand players and coaches, and fans flock in for a glimpse at the next boys of summer. But with the entire action taking place in just over a few weeks, it’s not too difficult to become lost in all the action that has little impact on the eight months of baseball that follow.

Sheets rocked by Reds isn’t a problem

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, MLB,

Ben SheetsBen Sheets was hit hard again. In his third Spring Training game with Oakland on Monday, he gave up 10 runs without recording an out against the Reds. Yet he and the Athletics claim that, runs aside, it was a good outing. Sheets is recovering from elbow surgery and is trying to return to the form he showed with the Brewers two years ago. Spring starts are the latest step in his return to the mound, and is still projected to start for Oakland on Opening Day.

Strasburg’s millions may not be enough

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Stephen StrasburgSpeculations are coming out that Stephen Strasburg, the highly touted No. 1 pick in the 2009 MLB Draft may not break with the Nationals at the end of Spring Training. All this is coming after being selected last June as people started asking if he would make his MLB debut during the 2009 season. Of course, he didn’t. That was likely as much due to the fact that it took over two months to sign him as it was his youth.

Winter ends, Spring Training begins

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: MLB,

Manny RamirezThis year, the end of the Winter Olympics will usher in spring, as the Major League Baseball Spring Training season kicks in on Tuesday when the Braves and the Mets throw the year’s first baseballs at each other. It’s easy to get caught up in the standings and to see your team do well through March and expect big things throughout the year as a result, but be careful with that. Spring Training is not so much about winning and losing as it is seeing what you have.
