Ottawa Senators start to rebuild, trade Mike Fisher to Predators

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Trades,

Mike FisherThe official beginning of the end for the Senators began on Thursday when the team sent forward Mike Fisher to Nashville in exchange for their first round pick in 2011 and third-rounder in 2012 – second if the Predators win two or more playoff rounds. Despite Fisher being a fan favorite and staple of Senators hockey for the past decade, it signals a changing of the culture in Canada’s capital and serves as notice that nobody on the Senators roster is untradeable leading up the NHL trade deadline.

Robin LehnerOttawa Senators goalie Robin Lehner made an uncharacteristic NHL debut on Saturday night against Montreal. Lehner was recalled from Binghamton of the AHL before Saturday’s game and ended up making an appearance when he started the third period. Ottawa starting goalie Brian Elliot broke a skate between periods and the referees were not willing to wait for him to find a replacement. Lehner was thrown into net and brought his career minutes total to four minutes, 42 seconds.

Nick Foligno and Peter Regin battling for top-six job with Ottawa Senators

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Nick FolignoThe Ottawa Senators are looking to build upon a 94-point season last year that resulted in a first-round exit, and part of that is deciding who their top-six forwards will be. They have five. The last spot has been a tough battle between Nick Foligno and Peter Regin. They’re competing for the left-winger job beside Mike Fisher and Alex Kovalev. While Regin was the popular choice before the pre-season began, Foligno has made a strong case and may snipe the job away from Regin.

The Senators have re-opened a four point lead in the Eastern Conference over Philadelphia and Montreal, thanks largely to a pair of shutouts against those two opponents. Brian Elliott was called to duty and shut the door twice; first in a 2-0 win against the Canadiens then another 2-0 blanking of the Flyers in back-to-back nights. The pair was his fourth and fifth shutouts of the season. He now has 25 wins total.

Brodeur legacy v2.0

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, NHL,

Mike BrodeurStep aside Martin, there’s a new Brodeur in town. Distant relative Mike has made the NHL and is ready for action. Called up as an emergency replacement for injured teammate Pascal Leclaire, Brodeur has filled the backup role exceptionally, shutting out the Rangers on Jan. 14, then allowing just two goals to the Canadiens on Jan. 16. Brodeur’s only other NHL experience was his debut on Dec. 19 against the Minnesota Wild where he stopped 22 of 23 shots. He was credited with the “W” on all three occasions.
