The Texas Rangers are having a pretty good season this year. The last time you probably heard somebody say that was in 1999 when the Rangers were swept by the New York Yankees in the American League Divisional Series. Since then, the Rangers plummeted in the ranks of the AL West and have slowly been climbing to get out of it. The latest chapter of Rangers history began yesterday when Nolan Ryan outbid Mark Cuban to become the newest owner of the recovering franchise.

Major League Baseball has a long, long history. After being founded in 1869, the game went through decades of changes before becoming what we recognize today as baseball. There is always talk surrounding teams that have been around for decades; about their great moments, their great players, and other memories of yesteryear. When a new player joins the ranks of an historic franchise, he is often told he has “mighty big shoes to fill.” It seems like a lot of time is spent looking at the past and not enough towards the future.

Philadelphia’s original number 32

Now that the dust is starting to settle around the Roy Halladay move to Philadelphia, the breakdowns and analyses of the trades have begun to take precedence among sports headlines across North America. Halladay was revealed as the newest Phillie in a media conference on Wednesday afternoon where, for the first time, he donned his new red and white jersey. An unnoticed piece to anybody outside of Toronto’s fanbase was the large “34” on the back of the jersey. Doc’s number 32 had to be replaced thanks to Philadelphia’s retiring in 1989 the number in honor of one of the greatest pitchers of all-time - Steve “Lefty” Carlton.
