Rick RypienSix games? Rick Rypien was suspended for only six games? After attempting to jump into the crowd during a game against the Wild last week, Rypien will watch his Vancouver teammates from home after receiving the professional sports equivalent to a slap on the wrist. We don’t know what Rypien’s actual intent was in going after the fan before being pulled away, but it’s not likely that he was attempting to get closer to the fan to give him a stern talking to.

Guillaume LatendresseThe NHL season does not start with the first drop of the puck; it starts with the first puck in the net. Minnesota’s Guillaume Latendresse had the honors of kicking off 2010 when he netted a wrist shot over Carolina’s Cam Ward at 3:33 of the first period in their game in Helsinki, Finland. Although the goal came in a 4-3 losing effort, it served as official notice that the talk is over; hockey is back.

Patrick O'SullivanPatrick O’Sullivan of the Edmonton Oilers is looking a bit rough these days. In his first full season in orange and blue, he’s been little more than a burden to the NHL’s last place team. While Edmonton as a team share a number of “worsts,” O’Sullivan too finds himself at the bottom of a category that he’d rather not be able to boast about. At minus-32, he is ranked 849th in the league in plus-minus…out of 849.

Losing Leafs win two in a row

Phil KesselWith wins against Carolina and Detroit this past weekend, the Toronto Maple Leafs have catapulted themselves ahead of the now-last-place Hurricanes and have a four-point lead over them. The Leafs have points in seven straight games, after failing to get a point in seven straight before that. They have 10 points in their last seven, and 11 points overall this year. The Leafs have definitely been one of the most inconsistently consistent teams in hockey this season. With their next game against the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday, who are the last-place team in the Western Conference, the Leafs are in a prime position to earn more points and rise one step closer to a playoff spot.
