Arbitrator Richard Bloch has decided in favor of the NHL in regards to the ludicrous 17-year, $102 million contract offered by the New Jersey Devils to Ilya Kovalchuk. With that decision, 2010’s hottest unrestricted free agent is back on the market, and New Jersey may not win out a second time.

Gary BettmanSo the NHL made another controversial, media-frenzy-inducing move; it’s just another day at the New York office. With the announcement that they rejected the New Jersey Devils-Ilya Kovalchuk contract worth $102 million over 17-years, this summer’s biggest hockey storybook was given a new chapter. Details why the NHL did not like the deal are tentative, but so far the reasoning says that the deal was rejected “on the grounds that it circumvents the NHL’s salary cap.”

A’s pick up Gaudin from Yankees trash bin

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Chad GaudinChad Gaudin will be moving clear across the country. After being released by the New York Yankees on Thursday, the right-handed pitcher reached an agreement with Oakland worth $700K. Gaudin, who was primarily a starter with the Yankees in 2009 will likely end up as part of the A’s bullpen as many of their current hurlers are sidelined with various injuries. This is a good pickup for the A’s as Gaudin can be used as both a starter and reliever, based on where he’s needed most.

Crawford, Rays don’t reach deal on contract extension

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, MLB,

Carl CrawfordThe Tampa Bay Rays were unable to reach an agreement for a contract extension with starting left fielder Carl Crawford last week, and the two sides have decided to hold off on further discussions until after the season. While this decision probably doesn’t make Rays fans happy about the future of their star outfielder, Crawford is certainly within his rights to not want to create a distraction for himself or his team for the upcoming 2010 season.

Manny sticking around for years to come

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, MLB,

Manny RamirezManny Ramirez has come out and said that this will be his last year in a Dodger uniform. He’ll play as much as he’s asked to play, but once his contract expires, he’ll either look for a DH role with an American League team or even consider retirement. After teams failed to show significant interest prior to 2009, Manny signed a deal with Los Angeles that could have seen him test free agency again for this year, but he opted to stay in California, which was probably in his best interests.

Canadiens and Laraque part ways

Georges LaraqueIs Georges Laraque being forced into some sort of unceremonious retirement? The Montreal Canadiens who are now Laraque’s former team, have come to a crossroads with the 33-year old enforcer and decided to effectively “buy him out,” by telling him that while they will continue to sign his paychecks, he won’t put on a Canadiens uniform ever again. He signed a three-year contract with Montreal, but has now been taken off the roster, just halfway into the deal.

Bay moving to New York, but not the good New York

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, MLB,

Jason BayIt seems as if the New York Mets have certainly lucked out. After holding out against the Red Sox for the last half year, Jason Bay has signed with the Mets. This deal is hopefully what will be the first in what the Mets want to be a series of moves to improve their on-field product. The Mets had what appears to be the best offer on the table monitarily, and Bay will be heading to New York with a four-year, $66-million contract in his back pocket.
