Ron RoenickeBaseball is full of families. The Griffeys, the Molinas, and countless others have adorned MLB uniforms and made great stories playing a great game. One of baseball’s lesser-known families is that of the Roenickes. Composed of Gary, his younger brother Ron, and Gary’s sons Josh and Jason, the Roenickes have a combined 22 years worth of MLB experience. While not a household band of names, the Roenickes have made their own small impact on the various teams they have played with.

Terry O'ReillyNow that we’ve more or less recovered from the green beer and shenanigans of St. Patrick’s Day, it’s time to take a look at some other important parts of Irish history: infractions and Boston. Former NHL winger Terry O’Reilly was famous for both. The ex-Bruin made a name for himself in Beantown thanks largely to his scoring touch, but more significantly for his staggeringly large number of penalty minutes. O’Reilly tallied 2,095 in his 14-year career.

Team Canada going for gold

Steve YzermanThe Winter Olympics in Vancouver officially begin this Friday. The event’s most anticipated event, the men’s ice hockey tournament, starts on Feb. 16. Team Canada takes on Norway in their first game of a tournament that many Canadians not only hope, but expect will be a moment of national pride. Canada GM Steve Yzerman has assembled an all-star roster, but the most important of those might be his coaches. Leading Canada will be head coach Mike Babcock and assistant coaches Jacques Lemaire, Ken Hitchcock, and Lindy Ruff. These are the guys who will be held most accountable for Canada’s success, or possible lack thereof.

Magic Coach Brian Hill Fired

After being swept in the first round of the NBA playoffs the Orlando Magic has fired their head coach Brian Hill. One of Hill’s flaws were not utilizing the talents of former Detroit Piston Darko Milicic, and JJ Redick who was the 11th pick in the first round of the 2006 NBA draft. It was heavily rumored that Hill had been fired, but those rumors were confirmed as fact today from an official of the club. The Magic had gone 40-42 this season, and over the course of Hill’s coaching career he’s had 298 wins and 315 losses.

Rockets Coach Jeff Van Gundy Fired

On Friday the Houston Rockets fired their head coach Jeff Van Gundy following another year of a first round NBA playoff elimination. Gundy had one nonguarenteed year left on his contract meaning that the Rockets had the option to keep him for the 08 season. This year the Rockets went 52-30, but it was heavily rumored that Van Gundy would be fired after their loss to the Utah Jazz in round 1 of the NBA playoffs. Van Gundy said he was hopeful to retain his job.

“I was hopeful all the way up to last night they would change their mind.”
