TiVo Conducts Lovelife Survey

Paradise Hotel CastIt seems that the good folks at TiVo do more than poll Superbowl commercials. They took a heartfelt survey that shows that 86% would rather stay home for dinner and a movie than go out for Valentines Day. Even more interesting are the results when participants were asked which TV show their love lives most represented.

  • Paradise Hotel 2 - Stunning and Serene 36%
  • The Biggest Loser - Difficult and Defeated 21%
  • Supernanny - Crazed with Kids 15%
  • When Women Rule the World - A One-sided Wonder 15%
  • Rock of Love 2 with Bret Michaels - Loud and Wild 8%
  • The Real Housewives of New York City - Rich and Spoiled 5%

Who are these people and where can we get our own Paradise Hotel? For those who aspire to that status, TiVo and Amazon Unbox are offering some discounted titles to watch tomorrow including “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” and a free download of BBC’s “Romeo and Juliet” for the weekend February of 15 through 17.

(Thanks, Mel)

Kwame’s Last LOL?

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smartphones, Editorial,

Kwame Kilpatric

If you live in the environs of Detroit, Michigan, then you already know that we are in the midst of political controversy. Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick had a more than business relationship with his now former chief of staff Christine Beatty. We wouldn’t presume to know or care what the politician does with his personal life as he is always up to some shenanigans, but one of the things mentioned during the uncovering of the scandal was text messages between the two. Apparently there were over 40,000 of them recovered.

We guess we assume that everyone text messages, so we found it somewhat amusing when they showed some of them and had interpreted them with differing versions of “LOL.” Local news anchors either literally said “L - O - L” or “hehehe.” Go figure.

While there is more to the story (including a public apology tonight after getting caught) that you can read if you are curious or simply want a giggle, we wondered about two things. Can a cell phone hold that many messages at a time? And even weirder, if you were supposedly in charge of an entire city, married, and having an affair, would you keep those messages around for just anybody to read? Hmmm. Like we said, we just wondered. Blogs are great for initiating discussions about topics like that.

The Battle of the Late Night Hosts

Jon Stewart and Stephen ColbertIn an epic match-up, post- hosts are facing off in a battle for the ages.  It’s a contest of wills that dares a meeting of and network TV that could rock more than one snarky show.

Well, perhaps it isn’t as big as all that - but it is mildly entertaining and it’s giving a little much-needed fodder in this strange world without TV . Like as not, even the best late night programs have been faltering. is opening every episode by flicking paper footballs randomly toward his audience, and on Tuesday’s episode played with clam shells instead of monologuing. Thankfully, Colbert recently picked a fight with fellow host to keep us all amused.

Here’s the breakdown: Colbert invited Presidential contender onto , thus granting him the highly coveted “Colbert bump.” Naturally, Huckabee’s popularity increased - and even he attributed this climb to Colbert. So, when Conan O’Brien claimed to be the real puppet master behind Huckabee’s success, Colbert was affronted.

Oprah: A Network of Her OWN?

Oprah WinfreyBig news today. You can hardly get on a Web site without seeing the banner headlines - , megastar and money-maker galore, is getting a TV network. And yet, the is already hers, no? And isn’t she somehow involved with the , too?

At any rate, the will be taken over by the star and become .  (Naturally, because the woman is well on her way to OWNing the world.)  As it is, Winfrey didn’t even pay for the Discovery channel network.  She instead turned over her Web site to the Discovery family and became chairman of the network. Not a bad deal.

Re-runs of her talk show will definitely be on the network, which will be all about Oprah all the time. Can’t wait.

Surprises in Store for Late Night TV

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Late Night, Cable, NBC, Daily Show, The, Gossip,

Stephen ColbertIf you’ve attempted to watch TV at all in the last two months, you know there’s an active in the works. Despite the picket lines, lots of studios are “encouraging” their hosts to get and back behind the desk.

, , and (among others) all intend to bring their shows back to the air beginning in January - but this time, they’re doing it without their writers. When it comes to television, this action is very much like walking a tightrope in the circus…with no safety net.

The hosts are members of the themselves, meaning they’ll have to pass by their union brothers and sisters on their way to work every morning (or afternoon, as the case may be). This membership also means the hosts themselves must continue to follow union rules, and will be subject to the terms and conditions therein. For instance, monologues and talk segments (like Colbert’s The Word) may no longer be part of the program. So…what, then, will viewers see on late night in January? For one, you won’t be getting scripted segments.
