Early Reviews for Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds

When a movie is annoyingly difficult to spell (I can never seem to get Inglourious Basterds right on the first try), you know the film’s going to generate mixed emotions. Although the crowds were eager to welcome Brad Pitt and director Quentin Tarantino to the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, the reception to their WWII era film was a bit uneven.

Early Reviews for Pixar’s Up

Although opening night at the Cannes Film Festival is usually dedicated to a French film, the 62nd annual event will be going in an entirely new direction. On May 13, a Disney production is getting the spotlight.
Up, the first animated feature to ever kick off the international event, is Pixar’s first PG-rated film since 2004’s The Incredibles. The comedy tells the story of a retired balloon salesman (voiced by Ed Asner) who decides to carry out his deceased wife’s dream of traveling to South America. Unfortunately, he accidentally takes an 8-year-old Wilderness Explorer along for the ride.
The film, which is also being released in 3-D, was directed by Pete Docter, the same man who helmed Monsters, Inc. and co-wrote Toy Story. Up doesn’t officially debut until May 29, but you can read a few of the glowing reviews after the jump.

Movie Review: Star Trek (2009)

(Warning: The following review contains some spoilers.)
The world of Star Trek in crisis! No, it’s not on the verge of dying due to the release of this film. Instead it’s on the verge of going in a whole new direction. In the 1980s, DC Comics published a mini-series entitled “Crisis on Infinite Earths”. If you are a comic book fan, you are aware of this series and know that it was written in order to say goodbye to DC’s old continuity and create an entirely new one. A new world was born. New stories were able to be told because the previous “universe” no longer existed. That is what has happened to the world of Star Trek.
In this film, there is a Romulan named Nero. Nero and his crew travel back in time and as a result create a new timeline. If you are a Trekker, I’m sure you remember the Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) episode entitled “Yesterdays Enterprise” in which the Enterprise C traveled into the future and created a new timeline. The timeline was later corrected and everything was back to normal, but that will not be the case here.
Star Trek as a franchise was certainly in a crisis prior to the release of this film. With the two previous Trek films received poorly by both fans and critics as well as the demise of the series “Enterprise” Star Trek looked dead. Many people felt that Star Trek should stay low for a while and maybe come back much later with an attempt at reviving the series. Paramount said no and went with J.J. Abrams and his crew and they have succeeded. This film was great. Tons of action; humor; heart breaking moments. I really enjoyed this film both as a fan of the franchise and as a movie on its own.

Movie Review: X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Here’s the problem with X-Men Origins: Wolverine - there is so much anticipation and expectation before the movie comes out that there is already a slim chance that the movie meets them. How many times have you had high expectations for something that actually panned out? Let’s see, The Empire Strikes Back, LeBron James coming into the NBA, and a second serving of Ben and Jerry’s Half Baked ice cream… that’s it. So, the question then is, does X-Men Origins: Wolverine make the grade? Umm, no.

Early Star Trek Reviews Are In

Although Star Trek doesn’t open stateside until May 9, audiences in London were able to preview the long-anticipated prequel last night. Based on the early reviews, J.J. Abrams has a bona fide hit in his hands:
Times Online: “Just when you thought that the Star Trek phenomenon had truly run its course, along comes J.J. Abrams’s stunning prequel to resuscitate the most enduring franchise in sci-fi history…Abrams’s film is a rollicking space adventure that makes you fall in love with the original series all over again.”

Wicked Lasers Spyder II GX review

We’ve been playing with the Wicked Lasers Spyder II GX laser for a few weeks now, and wanted to report back with some of our initial thoughts because we hit you with a video feature on Bleeding Edge TV.
So the Spyder II GX is a military-grade green laser that is housed in a light, black aluminum shell. The casing seems to be sctrach-proof, and just looks good. With purchase, you get the laser, two rechargeable lithium ion 18650 batteries (the lasers is powered by one, you so can always have a spare charged,) a pair of green 532nm LaserShades (to protect the eyes,) and a universal battery charger. All that will cost you $1,699.99.

Amazon Kindle 2 review

We’ve spent a few days with the Amazon Kindle 2, which has been the talk of the gadget world this week. We know some of you are wondering if you should pick one up, so we are here to give you our thoughts on the latest iteration of Amazon’s e-book reader. If you’re like us, you already know that the Kindle 2 is available for purchase now, and you likely have one in your hands - but for the rest of you, join us for our full review of the Kindle 2 (and if you missed it, check out our Kindle 2 gallery.)
Okay, so while we were working on the review, we sent a couple of questions out to some of our Twitter peeps asking what they thought of the device, and Lisa from EllisLab hit us back with so much info, that we are using her feedback to break this down for you. Sometimes you need the point of view of a “real world” user anyway, as opposed to one of us gadget fiends. So what we will do is give some of our thoughts on the Kindle 2, and then bring in Lisa’s thoughts as well.
The Kindle 2 was announced on February 9th, and just started shipping on February 24th. The announcement came with the promise of a 25% improvement in battery life, 20% faster page turns, a better screen that supports up to 16 shades of gray (as opposed to 4 shades with the original,) and a much thinner design.

Review: Invincible Iron Man 10

Run to the hills, Marvel has unveiled their “Iron Maiden”. Okay that was lame, but I couldn’t resist it. Now let’s get down to business… reviewing another solid issue of “Invincible Iron Man”. Month in and month out, Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca have been giving us the Iron Man movie on paper. I can’t believe I had reservations about this book when it debuted (I mean did we really need another Iron Man book), but I finally caved, bought the first three issues, and have been coming back ever since.
Anyway, this issue Norman Osborn continues his destruction of everything Tony Stark has ever built. But while Tony’s friends and employees suffer the Green Goblin’s wrath, Tony continues to play it calm, play it cool, and relieve “stress” with Maria Hill as he destroys his armory and goes on the run. And he’s not alone. Building off of events in previous issues, Pepper Potts finally takes up the mantle Fraction had been hinting at since the last story arc, the Iron Maiden, and not a moment too soon because Stormin’ Norman’s stormtroopers are on her tail. (You can thank the Spider-Man movie for that one).
As for Larroca’s art, the character’s designs are a continuation to the actors from the movie, but are unique enough that they aren’t direct traces. Much of this is enhanced by the coloring of Frank D’Armata giving the book an energetic realism.
Overall, if you’re not reading this book, get the first trade then catch up by buying the issues you missed. Trust me it’s worth it.
iLife ‘09 review

When Apple announced the new iLife ‘09 suite during the MacWorld 2009 Keynote last month, we were immediately intrigued by the seemingly powerful features included in iPhoto and iMovie. If you happened to catch it, you know what I am talking about. Faces and Places in iPhoto had the ability to change the way we use the program, and image stabilization in iMovie would be amazing for any amateur videographer or video hobbyist. We couldn’t wait to get our hands on the software, and now that we have been able to give it a good few days of playing with, we are ready to report back with our thoughts. Belkin Employee Asks Turkers for Amazon Reviews

Anyone who has ever Turked knows that there are some pretty silly requests sometimes for very little bucks (most are less than a nickel each, depending on the complexity and work involved.) It seems that Belkin employee Michael Bayard (or someone using his name) posted a hit on the site offering $.65 for positive reviews on the company’s products listed on Amazon. After being contacted, Belkin’s president Mark Reynoso issued a response, apologized and claimed that they have removed all postings as well as the fake reviews.
