The Philadelphia Phillies are getting stronger everyday

With a 10th inning game-winning home run by Carlos Ruiz, the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Florida Marlins and became Major League Baseball’s hottest team. After an unexpectedly slow start to the season, the Phillies have turned their fortunes around and are making a strong push for a playoff berth and not even a slew of midseason injuries seem to be slowing them down. In fact, as more players go down, the team as a whole appears to become strong in subsequent games.

Halak sent to Blues with a modest ‘thank you’

The near-Conn Smythe winner Jaroslav Halak has been rewarded for his incredible playoff run. The Montreal Canadiens sent him off to St. Louis in a trade for a pair of young prospects. In the process, Montreal’s former main goaltender Carey Price once again has the starter’s job; but only for the time being. The trade is being questioned by many; all wondering if it was a good idea to move Halak and keep Price. Due to their contracts, it was inevitable that one had to go, but why did it have to be the one who gave hope to the otherwise defeated city?

With yet another Game 7 road victory to clinch a series against one of the toughest teams in hockey, can anybody seriously stop these surging Habs? The one-time Cinderella Canadiens have now become the team to beat. Anything less than a Stanley Cup victory for Montreal may actually be seen as an upsetting finish now that they have brushed off both Ovechkin’s Capitals and Crosby’s Penguins. They’ll face either Philadelphia or Boston in the third round.

Playoff ride not short on stories

Vancouver lays an egg and Philadelphia survives to battle another game. Pittsburgh squeezes a win out of Montreal and San Jose ousts Detroit in five games. It’s just more of the same incredible stories in these NHL playoffs. Regardless of who has been playing on any given night, this playoff season has not been short on storylines. As the second round of the postseason winds down, it’s easy to forget that there’s still a full two series left to play.

Eastern Conference; who against who?

Waking up after another ridiculous impact game from Jaroslav Halak as the Canadiens evened up their series with the Penguins last night at two games apiece, I quickly realized that I had no idea that the other series in the Eastern Conference, Philadelphia against Boston, is even going on. After taking a quick look, I found that Boston holds a 3-0 stranglehold on the Flyers with a chance to clinch tonight. I also found that I’m not alone in my ignorance over this series.

The great upsetters

Can you believe it? The unthinkable has happened! Goliath has been beaten by David again. That is, the Montreal Canadiens have ousted the Washington Capitals in the first round, and what’s worse is that not only was it a opening series upset, but it was also a President’s Trophy-winning team that fell to a lowly opponent that barely made their way into the postseason. Sure the series went the seven-game distance, but that’ll be no consolation to Washington fans.

The state of hockey in the state of Pennsylvania is good. With both the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers moving on to the second round of the 2010 NHL playoffs, there’s a storyline nobody expected to come taking place. We’re still a full series away from a potential Stanley Cup-berthing series, but as two of the remaining eight teams, the Keystone state is well-represented; although the two teams arrived at their destinations in very different ways.

Miller the key to Buffalo’s future

A goalie can definitely steal a series, but can a goalie steal a Stanley Cup? That’s the question being asked about Sabres goalie Ryan Miller. Facing the Boston Bruins in the first round of the 2010 NHL Playoffs, Buffalo will be putting a lot of weight on their Olympic goaltender in their first playoff appearance in three years. But Miller isn’t looking at the past. His full attention is on the series against Boston, and he looked pretty good in his first game.

Edmonton finally finds reason to celebrate

TSN, Canada’s all-sports television network aired yesterday’s NHL Draft Lottery. The first 14 picks were ordered for the draft to take place on June 25 and 26, while the remaining 16 selections will be determined by the playoffs. After the climatic moment where the No. 1 picking team was revealed to be the Oilers, the program cut to a shot of Edmontonians celebrating in a bar. Did anybody tell these guys they finished in a convincing last place in all of hockey?

Aucoin excels in the one-on-one

With the incredible amount of shootouts in the 2009-10 season, you may be wondering who’s doing the best. That would be the Phoenix Coyotes; just another one of the unexpected bits of news to come out of Glendale, Arizona. Not only did they dominate throughout the regular season, Phoenix has a record-setting 14 shootout wins this season, and even more unexpectedly, 36-year old defenseman Adrian Aucoin has been a key part in almost half of them.
