Game 7, Game 82…it’s all the same

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,

Mike Richards/Dan GirardiOn the final day of NHL competition, it usually comes down to one thing: who will be playing who in the playoffs? That’s exactly the situation in the Western Conference as all eight playoff teams were determined earlier this week, but still, five of the eight seeds are variable. In the Eastern Conference, things are quite the opposite. The first six seeds are all determined. The last two are up for grabs between three teams in a game of NHL musical chairs.

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,

Matt DucheneWith only six days left in the NHL season, there are still four playoff spots yet to be clinched, and a lot more seeds to be finalized. The Eastern Conference is still pretty open, with Montreal, Boston, Philadelhpia, NY Rangers and Atlanta competing for three spots. We know teams one-through-seven in the Western Conference, but that final place will see the toughest competition, as all of Colorado, Calgary, St. Louis and Anaheim compete for it.

Only offense will decide final spots in East

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,

Andrei MarkovThe back end of the Eastern Conference playoff spots is very tightly contested; a welcome change from most other areas of the NHL standings. The Flyers, Canadiens and Bruins hold the last three positions, each with 82 points and five games remaining. The tiebreaking procedures gives Philadelphia a huge edge over Boston with three more wins total, but a tough final week could be deadly if they don’t play right. They’ll get their chance to start the end right tonight when they welcome those Canadiens.

Tampa Bay’s Zobrist is crucial to success

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Ben ZobristBen Zobrist is every coach’s almost-dream player. He plays a number of positions, can hit for power, and isn’t afraid to take a walk. His average and speed leave something to be desired, but for the man nicknamed “Zorilla” by Tampa Bay coach Joe Madden, Zobrist’s skill set is everything to be desired in a player who wears the name “Rays” across his chest. At 28 years old, Zobrist enters the 2010 season with the Rays with high hopes and even higher expectations.

Youthful Avalanche trying to turn around misfortunes

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Playoffs,

T.J. GaliardiThe Colorado Avalanche have got young and got good. After missing the playoffs last season and not advancing past the second round since 2002, the Avs are in the final stages of a rebuild and may squeeze themselves into the playoffs, currently holding on to the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference, but they do have some breathing room between them and Calgary. They’re also only five points back of third place, so things are still very much up in the air for Colorado.

Penguins struggle to steal win from Leafs

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,

Crosby & MalkinIt took the defending Stanley Cup champions to bring the Leafs down. Toronto is playing way out of its league this month, having taken nine of their last 13 games, and they’ve been doing it competitively. Eight of their nine wins have come either in overtime or a shootout. The only other was a 6-4 win against last-place Edmonton. Sunday evening’s 5-4 shootout loss to Pittsburgh is the latest sign that while 2009-10 is a write-off for the lackluster Leafs, some minor offseason tweaks and improvements might bode well for Toronto, and poorly for the rest of the league.

Ducks struggle while Perry flies

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Playoffs,

Corey PerryWhat do you get when you mix raw talent with good timing? The answer is Anaheim Ducks right winger Corey Perry. The 24-year-old Ontario native has been with the Ducks for five seasons now and has enjoyed relative success throughout much of his career but has flown under the radar with his team due to consistently good play. As they say, ‘where there’s smoke, there’s fire’, and until the 2009-10 season, there’s been clear skies in Anaheim.

Sharks, Blackhawks clinch playoff spots

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Playoffs,

Patrick KaneThe playoff picture became a little clearer on Thursday night as the top two seeds in the Western Conference clinched playoff spots. San Jose shut out Dallas 3-0 to both put them out of reach of ninth-place Calgary as well as leapfrog into first place over Chicago. Those same Blackhawks also clinched a berth, despite an 8-3 shellacking at the hands of Columbus. The Flames loss to the Islanders gave Chicago the edge in tie-breaking points.

Sabres have Canadiens number

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Playoffs,

Sabres/CanadiensThe Montreal Canadiens, who outplayed the Buffalo Sabres for 57 minutes on Wednesday night, managed to salvage a point and take sole possession of sixth place in the Eastern Conference, but it was at great expense. As one of the hottest teams since the Olympic break, Montreal really folded up last night. After taking a 2-0 lead, thanks to a pair from Andrei Kostitsyn, Buffalo’s late pressure resulted in the equalizing goals coming with 1:59 and then :48 left in the game. They went on to win in a shootout.

Elliott turns around Sens with back-to-back shutouts

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Playoffs,

Brian ElliottAlmost everything is coming up Ottawa. The Senators have re-opened a four point lead in the Eastern Conference over Philadelphia and Montreal, thanks largely to a pair of shutouts against those two opponents. Brian Elliott was called to duty and shut the door twice; first in a 2-0 win against the Canadiens then another 2-0 blanking of the Flyers in back-to-back nights. The pair was his fourth and fifth shutouts of the season. He now has 25 wins total.
