Microsoft Kinect NYC launch event

Posted by Patrick Lambert Categories: Microsoft, Video Games, Videos,

Microsoft launched their new Kinect motion sensor at midnight last night in New York City at the Toys R Us in Times Square, and the scene looked quite unreal. Streets were blocked off, long lines could be seen, and dancers wearing "You are the controller" t-shirts entertained the crowd. Overall, the launch appears to have gone smoothly and thousands of people are now discovering this new way to game on their Xbox 360 consoles. If you weren't part of the midnight crowd, you can still get yours for $149 at your local gaming store. For now, check out the video after the jump from one of the many who were outside in the mob.

Mix Tape: NYC Says No to Jay-Z, Blige Says Yes to Nina Simone

Jay-Z-A surprise Jay-Z performance outside David Letterman’s studio will not happen on Monday. A permit was not granted for the concert by New York City officials.

-A future reunion for Jay-Z’s wife (Beyonce) and the other Destiny’s Child ladies will also not happen. Ex-manager Matthew Knowles squashed all rumors about a performance or an album.

-According to one person “A Day in the Life” was worth $1.2 million. That’s how much handwritten lyrics to the John Lennon-penned song were sold for this week.

-Please don’t let me be misunderstood. Mary J. Blige will be playing Nina Simone in a movie about the singer’s life. Shooting on Nina will start this fall.

-Sophie B. Hawkins (remember her?) is donating all proceeds from her song “The Land, the Sea and the Sky” to help clean-up efforts in the Gulf area. The song is available on iTunes.

New NYC MTA 2010 Subway Map

The New York City Metropolitan Transit Association has just released an overhauled subway map. Changes include more surface area for Manhattan, better colors to represent water and parks, and a bit of a shadow around the subway lines. Staten Island has also been made smaller, since over there they only really have one subway line that goes back and forth. It’s been 12 years since the last time that the NYC MTA made a major revision to the subway map. The NYC subway map is one of the most recognizable transit maps on the planet.

New York Nearest Subway augmented reality iPhone 3GS app

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Travel, Videos,

For all of you who thought that the compass inside the was just a waste, think again. We’ve seen some apps that will be making use of the compass in ways you never thought possible, and one such app is New York Nearest Subway. Developed by acrossair, New York Nearest Subway is best explained as an augmented reality app that overlays information on top of a real-world view. You pull up the app, and the camera view is shown, with information telling you about which direction to walk to get to the nearest train station. It is truly genius. Hit the video above to see it in action. It’s not available just yet, but once it is, we will let you know.

You use this app alongside Exit Strategy NYC, and you are golden.

Exit Strategy NYC cuts down subway travel time

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Travel, New Apps, $1.99,

We’ve got a couple of NYC MTA-related subway apps we want to share with you today, the first being Exit Strategy NYC. A simple app, Exit Strategy NYC basically shows you which car you should ride in depending on where you plan on getting off the train. You tell it what line you are riding, and which direction you are going, along with telling it your final destination. It will then show you which train cars are closes to the exits and staircases for transferring.

We do know that a majority of the lines and stops in all of New York City are covered, but there are a few that aren’t complete. Still, those will come in a future update, and this app can really end up saving you a ton of time. Even better, it’s only $1.99, which means it costs less than a ride on the subway. This one is highly recommended, and you can purchase Exit Strategy NYC now in the App Store.

It is about twice the size of previous ones. The ball is covered with a Waterford Crystal design named “Let There Be Joy” and Philips’ 32,256 Luxeon Rebel LEDs that create more then 16 million colors in billions of patterns. Preview of New York, I Love You

New York, I Love You

Last year, I had the pleasure of watching Paris, je t’aime (“Paris, I Love You”), a wonderful collaboration of work from 21 international directors. The movie was comprised of 18 separate short stories; each tale using a different district of Paris as its backdrop. While the city was not always front and center, it’s character was always felt.

Now one of Paris’ producers will be giving NYC its share of the spotlight. (As if didn’t already do that.) Next spring, a large ensemble of actors - including Kevin Bacon, Ethan Hawke, Rachel Bilson, Orlando Bloom and Natalie Portman (also in Paris) - will be sprinkled over New York, I Love You‘s 12 short stories. The segments will be told from the city’s 5 different boroughs.

Catch a preview of the new movie after the jump.

Project Runway Goes LA

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Bravo, Cable, News,

DescriptionApparently supermodels really like a good change.

First, Tyra Banks decided to move her daytime talk fest from Los Angeles to New York.  Now, is scheduled to do the exact opposite.  Though in the latter case, the switch will not be permanent.

According to Entertainment Weekly, ‘s sixth outing will be split between NYC and LA.  This city-hopping move will apparently accommodate Klum’s personal and work schedules much better (but make everyone else’s a living hell).  The following year, things will return back to normal in New York.

As for the reality hit’s fifth season - the last one on - that too will still be set in the Big Apple.  That installment can be seen starting this July.
