Rick DiPietro out again with busted face

.jpg) Whenever it seems like things could not get worse for the New York Islanders, things get worse for the New York Islanders. The latest blow came on Friday when the team announced that top goaltender Rick DiPietro is going to miss the next four-to-six weeks. This occurred after DiPietro got into a fight with Penguins goalie Brent Johnson, or more accurately, he got into a punch. Johnson skated the length of the ice, threw one left hook and DiPietro was finished.

New Jersey Devils falling apart on and off the ice

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,
It’s going to take a heck of a winning streak to turn the New Jersey Devils from this season’s biggest bust into a playoff contender – at best. After headlining a rather tame summer with the contract controversy of Ilya Kovalchuk, the Devils now find themselves competing with the New York Islanders for last place in the Eastern Conference. The two anti-giants faced off against each other on Friday afternoon and the Devils found it impossible to score on Rick DiPietro, losing 2-0.

The Calgary Flames need to trade Jarome Iginla

.jpg) Jarome Iginla’s time in Calgary has to be coming to an end. Rumors continue to pour in that the Flames are entertaining trade offers for Iginla, but the longer they wait before making a deal, the worse Iginla’s trade value becomes. For a team that appears to be going nowhere fast, the longer they wait to pull the trigger on a deal for Iginla, the lower the return they’re likely to get back in trade.

Canadiens decision looking solid as Carey Price edges Jaroslav Halak

When Montreal dealt goaltender Jaroslav Halak to St. Louis last summer, many were quick to throw the Canadiens under the bus for cutting ties with Halak instead of Carey Price. How could they turn their backs on a goalie who was absolutely outstanding for over a month of playoff hockey? Still, the Canadiens did not believe that Halak was the better of the two. Plus, Price is younger, more controllable and shows more promise than Halak for the future.

Sean Avery’s antics a neverending story in the NHL

At this point it’s probably safe to assume that no force on earth can stop Sean Avery. Whether he’s bashing other players on the ice or ex-girlfriends in the media, this guy rubs everybody the wrong way. The latest infraction occurred on Sunday when Avery apparently sucker-punched Oilers defenseman Ladislav Smid after refusing to fight the Czech. While the video of the accusation is inconclusive, Avery’s history might lead you to believe that the Oilers have a valid argument.

Tomas Vokoun among the most underappreciated goalies in the NHL

You know that Martin Brodeur has been one of the best goalies of our time, and that others such as Roberto Luongo and Tim Thomas are up among the top performers, but how much of the success of these three owes to the fact they play in hockey hotbeds? Compare them to one Tomas Vokoun, whose career currently with the Florida Panthers and formerly of the Nashville Predators goes largely unnoticed due to his winter home in the Sun Belt.

NHL announces new format for 2011 NHL All-Star Game

.jpg) After a one-year hiatus due to the Winter Olympics, the NHL All-Star Game returns in January with a completely new format. The NHL Players’ Association and NHL VP of Hockey and Business Development Brendan Shanahan have announced that this year’s festivities in Raleigh, N.C. will feature all-star teams not representative of the Eastern and Western conferences, but instead feature two squads hand-picked by a pair of captains, not dissimilar from how children select teams for games on residential streets before dinner.

Coaches’ challenges not coming to NHL

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Front Office, NHL, Rumors,
Last week, the Florida Panthers General Manager Dale Tallon announced he wanted to discuss the possibility of implementing a coach’s replay challenge system at this week’s GM meetings in Toronto. The idea caught some air leading up to the discussion room, but it seems once the GMs got behind closed doors, Tallon’s suggestion was left out in the cold. The system would focus on goal challenges, but could be expanded to include penalty calls, missed calls, or anything else. In the end, it was just too broad.

Study shows concussions up in hockey

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,
Last week a study was released showing that not only were the number of concussions up in junior hockey in Canada, but it was seven times higher than previously reported. The study followed two junior teams during the 2009-10 season and recorded 17 players that suffered 21 concussions during 52 games. This serves as a very real warning to players, coaches and even parents that hockey at the grassroots level can be just as dangerous as hockey in the NHL.
