Get Discovered at the City of Fame

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Music,

City of Fame logoChances are you won’t be discovered at a drug store counter or the corner pub that showcases local bands, but now you have a better chance at this new website, the City of Fame. Upload your music videos or screen tests and perhaps you will be noticed, not that we think a lot of agents will be hanging on the site. Still, it is a step up from YouTube and MySpace. Registration is free and we wonder, if you make it, will the site ask for a percentage?

(Thanks, Frani)

American Idol Faces Lawsuit

American IdolCould there be trouble brewing behind the scenes of the world’s biggest singing stage? The American Federation of Musicians has filed a lawsuit against producers. The damages sought by the union is currently unspecified.

The suit claims that American Idol Productions Inc. and Tick Tock Productions Inc. (a subsidiary) violated a bargaining agreement by underpaying musicians. According to the terms of the contract, musicians receive royalties for re-runs.

Since 2007, however, the soundtrack for past episodes was cut out and new musicians hired to record new music for episodes of American Idol Rewind. The musicians’ union was not informed of this decision.

So, far the powers-that-be at American Idol have offered no comment on the suit.

Homade ChocoCase for iPhone

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories:

ChococaseChococase

We suppose that there are plenty of folks that love their iPhone and chocolate, so now you can have the best of both. Homade’s Chococase protector is made of silicone and has a screen protector. While we are not sure that we would want to protect a $400.00 phone in a box that resembles candy for fear of a chocoholic trying to chomp down on it, we suppose that it beats putting it in an old Altoids tin. Still, $29.99 makes it one pricey cover.

We are not sure exactly how that happens although the company says that it is similar to TiVo and that installation is simple when you select through iTunes software or any other Net sites of your choice. It also acts as a recharging dock while it does its thing. We found the Castgrabber at the online  Home Depot for $119.95.

Can Disney Rock the Ratings Again?

Camp Rock

Lightning doesn’t strike twice…unless you build the right kind of rod. No one anticipated the runaway success of Disney’s High School Musical, and now the powers-that-be are determined not to be caught unawares a second time. Fanfare and fan participation became the bookends of the High School Musical 2 marketing campaign…and even this pales in comparison to the star treatment the network is giving the soon-to-be-released .

The promos have been going strong for weeks, the Web site is filled with glitter and pizazz, and the debut is scheduled for June 20. Are you itching to set your DVR?

With the co-starring and a crop of fresh-faced youngsters, Disney is treating Rock like it’s the heir apparent to the Musical throne (the stars of which are moving quickly past the high school stage of their lives). But…is it?

Fred Meyer Chain Sells Vinyl Records

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Music,

Abbey RoadWhen an employee tried to order a special CD-DVD of REM’s “Accelerate” for the Fred Meyer’s retail chain, he(she) mistakenly entered “LP.” Sure enough, vinyl records showed up at many of the stores. While some sent them back, others kept the 20 records and sold out the next day. Because of the good results, the chain, owned by the Kroger Co., are now selling them at 60 of its stores in the Alaska, Oregon, California, and Washington. Abbey Road tops their best-seller list. We think that is a fine idea, since we miss the sound of music on vinyl, and hope they give that employee a raise.
