The Idols Attempt Mariah Carey

Mariah CareyAny person with a shred of common sense knows—you shouldn’t go on aiming to sing anything by Whitney Houston, Celine Dion or Christina Aguilera.  Not only will the decision set you up for comparison, it’s likely you’ll end up in a world of embarrassment.

So why then would the producers schedule a whole night dedicated to ?  Isn’t that the last thing Randy, Paula and Simon would want the contestants to do?

During a recent exit interview, Michael Johns revealed he would have attempted a version of “Vision of Love” during next week’s show.  (Of course, his early exit means we are now being spared that potentially questionable rendition.)  But what does this mean for the rest of them?  Which records could David Cook, Jason Castro, Brooke White or Carly Smithson possibly sing?

I’m predicting Archuleta will take on “One Sweet Day”.  Make your guesses for the rest of them now!

American Idol: Shock and Awe

American Idol Top 8

The pushed-back Thursday elimination night on began with a promise from Ryan Seacrest, who touted “guest stars and surprises” at the top of the hour. There certainly were some surprises, but most of them weren’t at all good.

The evening kicked off with clips of , which has so far raised more than $60 million for various charitable organizations. Next, the Top 8 Idols sang “Shout to the Lord” while a huge choir sang in the background. It was, all told, way too schmaltzy for an elimination night. But more of the same would continue throughout the evening.

iPod Onesie for Babies

iPod OnesieIf you are looking for a baby present, but the kid is too young for an iPod, what would be better than a Onesie to get the little nipper in the correct frame of mind? Unfortunately, it won’t change itself if you push a button and there is no mute. The American made garment is screen printed and available for $25.00 in a size of 6 to 12 months. Those greedy 3 to 6 month olds bought up all of them in the smaller size but you can pre-order for when they are back in stock. Of course, by then the infant will have outgrown it.

Idol Gives Back: Just as Good the Second Time Around?

Idol Gives Back Top 8 Group Number

Last year, ’s charity spectacular was still shiny and brand-new. Everything was a surprise, everything was unexpected. Two theaters were packed with partygoers, celebs, singers and cameras. The contestants were given a week without eliminations, and the viewers were given more A-list performers than they could quickly name. In a two and one half-hour broadcast that still ran long, Idol did it again this year. Was giving back as successful this second time around?

American Idol’s charity special still earned the highest ratings of Wednesday night, but the numbers were down from last year. In fact, the numbers were the lowest for Idol since a 2005 pre-taped broadcast. The stars were bigger, the performances more astounding and the promos even more exhausting. So, where did it all go wrong?

Should the Record Industry Offer Free Music?

Music Glue logoAn interesting meeting took place during the Song Summit Sydney (S3) in Australia. Mark Meharry, co-founder of Music Glue, said that consumers are changing and that the record industry will have to respond to the fact that there is now much more file sharing as opposed to purchase. He says that downloaders are music fans, not thieves.

Considering the fact that the current generation can get what they want without spending a dime, Meharry suggests they let the music be free and concentrate on other products available, such as music players or concert tickets. Some of the bands listed on Music Glue, which was started about a year ago, offers free downloads in exchange for an e-mail addy or small donation. We like the idea but suspect that this is a debate that will not end for quite a while.
