Mel Gibson Ordered to Participate in Q&A

Mel Gibson

In response to a lawsuit filed by writer Benedict Fitzgerald, a judge has ordered movie mogul Mel Gibson to answer specific questions about expenses for his hit saga .

Fitzgerald claims Gibson underpaid him for his work. The claim is that writer payments were lowered for Gibson-related expenses, a contractual violation. The screenwriter’s lawyer says Gibson spent large sums for personal reasons while filming in Italy, including $78,000 on a chiropractor bill.

Gibson has been ordered to appear for a deposition by mid-January to answer questions regarding the film. So far, his lawyer is unavailable for comment.

The Case of Batman vs. Batman

The Dark Knight

Oh, the comedians are going to have a field day with this. In a just-strange-enough-to-work, headline-grabbing lawsuit, Batman will face off against the minds behind . But will the case ever see the inside of a courtroom?

Batman isn’t just a comic book character who first appeared on the scene in 1939 (then called the Bat-man), it’s also an oil-producing town in Turkey. Batman has been refining the fuel since 1955 and boasts Turkey’s oldest refinery. But now, the issue of name infringement has been raised.

Huseyin Kalkan, mayor of Batman, has legally filed suit against Christopher Nolan (who directed The Dark Knight) and Warner Bros. in hopes of gaining a cut of royalties from the film (sure, aren’t there enough to go around?).

Project Runway’s Move to Lifetime Blocked

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC, News,

Project RunwayDespite Lifetime’s plans to unveil Project Runway this January, the reality hit’s future is now a big mystery. A New York Supreme Court judge has just temporarily blocked the reality program’s move to its new network.

This ruling comes months after The Weinstein Company announced it was ending Project‘s run on Bravo after five seasons. Believing the producers had violated a “right of first refusal” agreement, NBC Universal (Bravo’s parent company) filed suit. On Friday, the judge issued the preliminary injunction barring Lifetime from any marketing of the series until after the issue is settled.

Although NBC Universal was pleased by the ruling, the Weinsteins (who have vowed to appeal) also declared a minor victory. “We are glad that the court held that NBC Universal cannot exhibit the program on Bravo and that the court required NBC Universal to post a minimum $20 million bond,” a company statement read.

The season finale of ‘s current season will air on Wednesday, October 15. Meanwhile, production on the show’s sixth installment is scheduled to continue during the ongoing dispute.

Tommy Lee Jones Sues Paramount For $10 Million

Tommy Lee Jones goes after Paramount

While Fox and Warner Bros. are dealing with their battles, Paramount now has to deal with one of their own, thanks to a $10 million dollar lawsuit compliments of Tommy Lee Jones.

The veteran actor is seeking payment that he claims is rightfully owed to him for the services he provided for the 2007 Coen Brothers’ hit, No Country For Old Men.

Although both Paramount and Jones declined to comment, the actor’s publicist simply pointed to the lawsuit, which notes a contract N.M. Classics (a subsidiary of Paramount’s) that promises Jones “significant box-office bonuses and ‘back-end’ compensation.”

Lifetime Delays Project Runway’s Start

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Bravo, Cable, News,

Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn on Project RunwayLifetime, the future home for Heidi Klum and crew, has just announced that the start of ‘s sixth season will be delayed.

Although Bravo is currently airing its last round of the series, another was scheduled to unfold just months from now. But Lifetime - probably realizing it had to handle this major coup with care - has decided to push their premiere until the beginning of next year.

This move will reportedly give the channel more time to promote Project. It will also allow the network a chance to overexpose the reality hit. (If that hasn’t been done already.) A spokesperson told EW the January 2009 debut will officially kick off twice a year installments of the program.

Assuming the pending lawsuit doesn’t screw up matters up altogether, production on the show’s upcoming season will be split between New York and LA.

Court Date Set for Watchmen Lawsuit

Court sets date for Watchmen trialWhile most Watchmen fans only had the film’s release countdown to consider, a new development in the Watchmen copyright lawsuit has added a new date to watch out for: January 6.

U.S. District Court Judge Gary Allen Feess assigned the date for the case, which is set to decide whether or not Fox does hold the rights to the Watchmen movie. Between the January 6 court date and the film’s scheduled March 6 release, let’s hope that things go in the fans’ favor and they settle this between that time.

If the case goes according to Fox, fans of the highly-anticipated Zack Snyder film will never see that March 6 release happen, which could very well happen come January.

The dispute goes back to 1991, when Fox “quitclaimed” its right to Alan Moore‘s acclaimed graphic novel to Largo Entertainment, with an agreement that the production company was to release the movie under the big studio (if not, Largo Entertainment was to buy the rights through an agreed buyout formula from Fox).

Paris Hilton Sued for Lack of Promotion

Pledge This DVDFunny. I never thought the phrases “Paris Hilton” and “lack of publicity” could ever be used in the same sentence.

A lawsuit filed Tuesday in Miami’s District Court claims failed to live up to her contractual obligations. The heiress, who received an acting and an executive producer credit for National Lampoon’s Pledge This!, reportedly dropped the ball when it came to the film’s marketing.

According to Worldwide Entertainment Group Inc., the company is owed $75,000 because Hilton did not provide “reasonable promotion and publicity” for the 2006 sorority movie.

Now, given that Paris Hilton’s most recent film (The Hottie & the Nottie) failed despite her talk show appearances - what kind of numbers were the Pledge This! producers expecting to get?

Man files $5 billion suit against Google

Google lawsuit

Citing claims of privacy invasion and terrorisim, a one Dylan Jayne has filed a (handwritten) suit against . Mr. Jayne (who gives one of our favorite Firefly characters a bad name) seems a bit off his rocker on this one. He states that not only has Google failed to fight terrorisim, but they also seem to have invaded his privacy as indicated by the following statement: “I, Dylan Stephen Jayne, plaintiff, has [sic] a social security number that when the social security number is turned upside down in its entirety it is a scrambled code that does spell the name Google®.”

Last time I checked Google’s business model didn’t seem to cover stopping terrorism, leaving that job to the ‘professionals’ over at Homeland Security. His claims of privacy invasion also seem a little far fetched - it’s hard to think a fortune 100 company would pick it’s name based soley on the Social Security number of a lone loser from Pennsylvania.

In a way it’s a sad statement about the United States legal system that a case like this will even be heard by a judge. If Mr. Jayne can’t even be bothered to type up his Complaint can he really be considered compentent enough with computers to really even understand what exactly it is that Google does? Check out the Ars Technica article for more information on this weird little case and keep your eyes peeled here late breaking news as it percolates through the Justice system.

Winnie The Pooh Lawsuit Rages On

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Kids, Gossip, News,

DisneyCuddly toys, DVDs, story books, blankets, towels, clothing…well, the list goes on and on when it’s time to consider Pooh Bear merchandise. The honey-crazy bear has lit up TV screens and movie marquees for years and years, but it’s his court battle that’s grabbing all the headlines now. Would you have the courage to sue Winnie the Pooh? The Slesinger family does, and has battled the Disney Company for several years for rights to Pooh-related royalties. The family claims that Disney violated copyright and trademark agreements, among other disputes, and seeks up to two billion dollars in back royalties as compensation for Disney’s oversight. That could certainly buy a whole lot of honey, which thankfully never, ever spoils. The battle has raged since 1991, when Stephen Slesinger, Inc. filed a lawsuit against the company concerning Winnie’s merchandised assets. Disney is maneuvering to cancel and delay talks, creating even more drama around the case, and the Slesingers are publicly upset. Reportedly, Disney grosses six billion dollars a year from Pooh Bear and all his related merchandise.
