Musicians Rejoice: FourTrack Audio Recorder for iPhone, iPod touch

Musicians (and non-musicians) are often caught with songwriting ideas and nowhere to write them down; fear not, the $10 FourTrack is here! Although it’ll never replace your main recording setup, this app for the Apple iPhone or 2nd generation iPod touch records, mixes and plays up to four tracks like a pocket-sized version of Pro Tools.

Recording in true 16-bit, 44.1 kHz quality, FourTrack works with the iPhone headset mic, or an iPod touch with a third-party mic and headphones so your inspiration isn’t forgotton. Each track can be as long as your device’s memory can handle and once you’re ready, Wi-Fi Sync allows your recordings to be downloaded to nearly any desktop computer, where tracks can be transferred to whatever recording software you prefer.

mStation Stereo Tower

It seems that Voix isn’t the only company that is into iPod tower speakers. Made of extruded aluminum, the floor standing mStation 2.1 Stereo Tower has up to 100W of power, a 5.25-inch subwoofer and a 6 cradle docking station that syncs with iTunes. The 10 key IR remote allows for navigation and adjusting treble, bass and volume. USB and stereo Mini cables are included in the package. We dig the design, but you can expect a $295.95 price tag.

Google Earth Now Available on the iPhone

Google just released a free iPhone/iPod Touch version of its popular Google Earth desktop mapping application. The application allows users to fly around the globe with just the swipe of a finger; tilting the unit adjusts your view, zoom in or out by simply pinching your fingers. The new app also integrates geo-located Wikipedia articles – fly to the pyramids, and read all about them, all while riding the bus to work. Onkyo MHP-UW2 Acoustic Earbuds

Onkyo MHP-UW2 Onkyo has released a new set of MHP-UW2 wireless headphones. The acoustic earbuds operate on a 2.4GHz frequency. Plug the 46 x 90 x 17mm transmitter into your iPod and you are good to go. With lithium-ion batteries, expect about 8 hours of use before needing a recharge. The headphones come with a USB cable and AC adapter. Look for a November release for ¥20,000 (~$20.00.)

Travelers Resent PMD Users

iPod Subway Users Monash University student Michael Walsh recently conducted a study of those who used PMDs on trains. While some said it helped to escape the noise of the vehicle and other travelers, non-users sometimes resented them because the user “fails to communally experience the aural soundscape.” The report also said that although most of the PMP owners realized that they could damage their hearing they wouldn’t give it up. They might want to think about that one. Those of us that attended rock concerts years back that had the same warning didn’t listen either.
