YouTube to Preview Scrubs Musical Number
As a fan of all things Scrubs, I can barely contain my excitement over the upcoming YouTube preview from the series’ musical episode. On December 29th, a sneak peek of the song “Everything Comes Down to Poo” will be available to view on YouTube. The song is performed by Zach Braff, Donald Faison and Stephanie D’Abruzzo (who guest stars in the musical episode). If you haven’t already, check out the video “Guy Love” on YouTube. This tender sweet song expresses the totally straight, yet sometimes misunderstood, relationship between Braff’s JD and Faison’s Turk.
The upcoming musical episode of Scrubs will air on January 18th.

Wii Opera Beta To Be Available December 22

Nintendo of America announced that a free beta version of the Opera Web browser for the Wii will be available for download on December 22. The browser was initially intended for launch, but it looks like delays have pushed back the final version until March of 2007. Nintendo of America still promises that users will be able to download the browser for free until the end of June 2007.
In addition to the launch of the beta browser, Nintendo’s weather Forecast Channel is set to launch on December 20th, and their News Channel is scheduled to launch on January 27th.

NBC May Webcast SNL Rehearsals

The possibility that NBC could broadcast Friday night rehearsals of Saturday Night Live may become a reality. NBC Universal chief digital officer George Kliavkoff spoke at a panel discussion on digital media at the Digital Entertainment Media & Marketing Excellence conference in Los Angeles. “Sometimes it’s a lot more interesting than the show. It’s something we watch on the cameras at 30 Rock,” said Kliavkoff. Currently, the Friday rehearsals are broadcast closed-circuit at NBC headquarters. NBC already has two shows that go behind-the-scenes of sketch comedies—30 Rock and Studio 60 both offer a glimpse at what goes into making a live late-night comedy show. So why not make it a reality with SNL? I think it would be a great inside look at what really goes on, including what gets cut and how things play out in rehearsal.

Look for ‘Lost Moments’ to Keep Fans Happy

OK folks, now that Lost is on hiatus for 13 weeks, it’s time to curl up in the fetal position and wait for the series to return in February. Never fear… ABC will be spoon-feeding small morsels of the hit show to fans during these long cold weeks of darkness. Day Break, starring Taye Diggs, will be taking the place of Lost, but viewers of Day Break should be on the lookout for what ABC is calling “Lost Moments.” These 30-second clips will show scenes from upcoming episodes and just may reveal, in small bites, what’s ahead for 2007. Of course, ABC won’t reveal what time the clips will be aired during Day Break, thus encouraging viewers to tune in for this new Groundhog’s Day-esque drama. If you don’t happen to watch Day Break, ABC will include the promos on ABC.com the next day.

Faith Hill’s CMA “Joke” Sparks Controversy

During last night’s Country Music Association Awards (CMAs), Faith Hill reacted to Carrie Underwood’s win for female vocalist of the year by what appeared to be her screaming “WHAT?” Well, it’s all over the Internet today and in the media—was Hill being a poor sport, a la Kanye West? Hill says no—that she was merely joking with her reaction. Says Hill of the incident, “The idea that I would act disrespectful towards a fellow musician is unimaginable to me. For this to become a focus of attention given the talent gathered is utterly ridiculous. Carrie is a talented and deserving Female Vocalist of The Year.” The camera shot of Hill when the winner was announced did not pick up the audio, but it seemed clear that she was saying the word “WHAT?” The video (of course, available on YouTube.com) also appears to show Hill storm off camera. I don’t know much about country music or the artists, but what I’ve seen of Faith Hill, it does seem out of character for her to be a poor sport. Apparently, Underwood had no hard feelings about it either—her publicist said the two singers spoke afterward and all was fine.

The Office: Producer’s Cut

This week, fans of The Office will get an extra treat online—a “producer’s cut” of the episode airing on November 9th. This is the first time that this type of special feature has been available online. With additional scenes and footage that won’t air on the Thursday broadcast, viewers can get a little somethin’ somethin’ that is usually reserved only for DVD extra features. The “web-exclusive event” will be available to viewers following the 8:30 airing of The Office, so log on to NBC.com at 9:00 p.m. Executive vice president NBC digital entertainment and new media, Vivi Zigler, said of the event: “This is a first-of-its-kind and a real bonus for fans of The Office. It’s also a natural for this show which has continually pushed the envelope in the digital landscape. We’re seeing an incredible audience reaction to the evolving digital extensions of our programming and anticipate this being one of their favorites.”
If you haven’t seen promos for this week’s show—Jan (Melora Hardin) informs Michael (Steve Carell) that his branch of Dunder Mifflin (the Scranton office) will be shutting down. You can bet that Michael will do his best to keep staff morale going, which always leads to the best Michael moments

‘On The Lot’ Promises Hope for Aspiring Filmmakers

From the power-team of Mark Burnett and Steven Spielberg comes the latest reality show—On The Lot—a chance for wannabe filmmakers to make it in the big leagues. Fox offers up this competition, with applicants 13 and over being asked to submit their self-directed, five minute short film online at TheLot.com.
Video submissions have already been received, with hundreds available to view and critique. On The Lot promises a $1 million development deal at DreamWorks to the winning director. The show will air in the spring, featuring the 16 finalists chosen from the online entries. The show’s viewers will vote each week and ultimately determine the winner. The series will air over two nights—one night to show the films that the filmmakers produce for a chosen theme; the next night to announce results. They will be given writers, cast and crew to work with.
If you’re an aspiring filmmaker, there’s still time. The deadline for submissions is December 1st.

Grey’s Anatomy Gives The Fray a Boost

In other Grey’s Anatomy news, the series has featured two videos by the band The Fray—and given the rock group significant exposure. The hit series aired a four-minute video following the September 7th episode for the single “How to Save a Life,” featuring clips from the show. They followed it up two weeks later with an extended video with additional scenes. And that’s not all—the videos were available on web sites, including ABC.com, as well as electronic magazines. ABC Entertainment senior VP of marketing, Michael Benson, said that the value of the videos were in their ability “to become great content for TV viewers… going beyond the 30-second promo and driving people back to television.”
The band has definitely seen a jump in sales, with between 2,000 and 3,000 copies being sold per week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. To date, the album has sold 897,000 copies, while the title track has sold 622,000 digital downloads. The song “How to Save a Life” is also featured on the Grey’s Anatomy, Volume 2 soundtrack.
For my money, however, I think the tune “How to Save a Life” was a much better fit on last season’s episode of Scrubs, titled “My Lunch.” I was bawling—Scrubs has always done an excellent job of integrating music into every storyline and the inclusion of “How to Save a Life” made me rush out and buy The Fray’s CD the very next day.

30 Rock Premiere Available Online

I guess not everyone will share my sentiment about 30 Rock, starring Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin—there are a lot of negative comments out there about the show—but I’m really looking forward to Wednesday’s premiere. Perhaps I was in the minority, but I just loved Fey on Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live and think her writing for the film Mean Girls was fantastic. Alec Baldwin is always a showstopper for me too. Any time he’s hosted SNL, he’s been incredibly funny, with excellent timing. I know, I know, there is already the behind-the-scenes-look-at-a-late-night-sketch-comedy-show on Studio 60, but try and give this one a chance.
That said, you can view the entire premiere episode at NBC.com—in advance of the premiere on Wednesday night. I’m dying to see it, but alas, will have to wait until tomorrow to check it out because I’ve just been too busy. Whether you watch it online or catch it on NBC Wednesday at 8:00 PM, I’d love to hear what you think of it. Good—Bad—or just, eh?
