Alice Chess Set

Yasmin Sethi’s Chess Set was inspired by the classic novel “Alice Through the Looking Glass.” In the novel, the heroine becomes a human chess piece. Yasmin’s pieces are opaque until they are placed on the surface of the board. Then they become transparent. They are made of LightPoints, a glass material with LEDs. The designer says that his creation has a point.

“This is a comment on how a chess piece has no value unless it is in play on the board. If removed from the board, a pawn and a queen are equal, in that neither have any value.”

Hmmm. Very deep stuff. Fans of the Lewis Carroll novel will also appreciate the White Knights that only function when they are upside down.

TV’s Turning Japanese!

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Games, Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Cable, FOX, Gossip,

I Survived a Japanese Game ShowI think we’re turning Japanese. Flip your TV to ABC and you’ll see weird costumes and almost unbelievable stunts on and I Survived a Japanese Game Show, two series based on popular Japanese game shows. FOX plans to release a similar show, their version of Japan’s Hole in the Wall, this coming fall.

What do these shows bring to the U.S. gaming table? In two words, shock value. Anyone who has viewed the You Tube clips can see that Japanese games are daring, daunting…and at times very, very bizarre. Hole, for instance, makes competitors face off against solid walls with strangely-shaped openings offering the only survival. And if they fail? They fall into water, and lose the game. Many Japanese game shows require extreme physical exertion, along with an element of the oddly and brutally funny, in equal measure. If you laugh when you see someone fall down and possibly hurt themselves, for instance, Japanese game shows are probably your bag.

WowWee Tribot

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: CES, CES 2008, Misc. Tech, Science, Toys,

TribotWowWee has finally moved on from their inane Chatterbots to bring us all the Tribot, which we first introduced you to in February from the CES. Obviously named for its three-wheeled base, the bot can move in 8 directions (including diagonal.)The kewl tilt trigger button allows you to move him in directions by just moving the remote around. He will also tell jokes and stories and refers to himself as “the most rad robot in the galaxy.”

Wait, there’s more. Use Tribot as a guard against alien bots or dogs, as an alarm that needs a tap on the head to shut him up, challenge him to a game of hide and seek, or play one of three driving games. We would have been happy if he just cleaned up our room.

Annual Stupid Robot Contest

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories:

Papa RobopuchoRobotic competitions are not limited to those with agility and practicality. Meiwa Electronics sponsors the annual Stupid Robot Contest. Entries must be mechanical, useless, and make people laugh. Papa Robopucho plays the red-flag white-flag game solo, then topples over and cries for help. We’re not sure what the baby ones do. Previous contestants included a chorus of preggers wifebots. While we don’t really find that the most amusing of robotic entrants, we suppose there is just no accounting for taste.

Post-Strike Television Schedule

Now that we have come to the end of the , it’s time to once again update our television programming schedules.

Mid-season replacements have had seen their debuts shuffled (e.g. New Amsterdam), some programs are coming back with new episodes (e.g. Scrubs, 30 Rock) while other shows aren’t slated to return until next year (Pushing Daisies).

Here you can find a

compilation of the 2008 post-strike schedules

Two notes:

  2. The list consists of premieres and dates for new episodes.
  3. If a particular time slot/network is not mentioned, either nothing has changed or no specific announcement has been made yet.
