Oprah: A Network of Her OWN?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Talk Shows, Cable, Syndication, Oprah Winfrey Show, News,
Big news today. You can hardly get on a Web site without seeing the banner headlines - Oprah Winfrey, megastar and money-maker galore, is getting a TV network. And yet, the WE network is already hers, no? And isn’t she somehow involved with the Oxygen network, too?
At any rate, the Discovery Health channel will be taken over by the talk show star and become OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. (Naturally, because the woman is well on her way to OWNing the world.) As it is, Winfrey didn’t even pay for the Discovery channel network. She instead turned over her Web site to the Discovery family and became chairman of the network. Not a bad deal.
Re-runs of her talk show will definitely be on the network, which will be all about Oprah all the time. Can’t wait.

TV Land’s ‘Myths & Legends’ Returns
TV Land’s original Myths & Legends series has been renewed for a second season, back to shed light on the famous stories, rumors and half-truths which have become part of our favorite past shows and performers.
The second season begins August 27 at 10 pm and will air in half-hour increments. The first season of the series, which explored the legendary status of Carly Simon’s You’re So Vain among other notable Hollywood stories, snagged nearly a million viewers per episode - huge numbers for a cable channel of TV Land’s ilk. The series offers a rare glimpse into the world of celebrity and TV show rumors, exposing the answers (and the truths) that make TV worth watching in the first place.

Golden Globes Covered on Multiple Channels
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Award Shows, Prime Time, Cable, NBC, Announcements,
A pissing match between NBC and Dick Clark Productions will allow tomorrow’s announcement of the Golden Globe winners to air simultaneously on multiple channels. The one-hour awards presser - which was once an NBC exclusive - can now be seen elsewhere, just like the recently overhyped Patriots game. (That’s what the Peacock network gets for refusing to pay the requested licensing fees.)
TV Guide and E! are the only two channels to (so far) announce full coverage of the free-for-all event. No matter what your station preference is, be sure to be tuned in by 9:00 ET.

Reality Renewals: ‘The Mole’ and ‘The Two Coreys’
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Games, Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Cable, Renewals,
At what point did A&E become less about Arts and more about Entertainment? The cable channel - which already boasts quality programs like Gene Simmons Family Jewels - has just chosen to bring back the The Two Coreys, starring Corey Feldman and Corey Haim. (Apparently it takes more than one season for those Lost Boys to talk about their glory years.)
This spring, the horribly-painful-to-watch series promies to bring “more drama, tension and laughs as they struggle to make their relationship and careers work.” Wasn’t that the theme last year? I’d think it would be safe to blame the writers’ strike for this renewed interest in their sad lives. As much as I enjoyed watching Haim cry about not having a girlfriend in his life, I don’t think I could do it again. Well, maybe….
Meanwhile, ABC is dusting off one of their own reality classics: The Mole. (I don’t think that revival will ever reach American Gladiator-proportions.) The only reason I fondly remember the series was because it brought Anderson Cooper into the primetime spotlight long before he was deemed a credible news source. (Prior to that, I had been admiring him during the pre-dawn hours on World News Now.)

Comedy Central Hosts Return
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Comedy, Late Night, Cable, Daily Show, The, Editorial, Gossip,
Late night TV (and Comedy Central) got a boost Monday night with the return of The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report. Absent from TV since November 1, 2007, both hosts winged it on-air without their writers, and neither was afraid to comment on the current scriptless situation. But even with these valiant efforts, viewers didn’t see the same shows they’re used to.
It’s been pondered for weeks now, and finally the question has been answered. How will Comedy Central’s two late night shows fare without writers? For these first episodes back, both hosts talked about the strike at length, each interviewing experts on labor relations and unions. Stewart, who has a background in stand-up comedy, seemed as relaxed and at home as ever on stage, though he referred to the present as “uncomfortable circumstances.” Stewart also announced a name change for the show, to be in effect for the duration of the strike: ‘A Daily Show’.

Presidential Race Changed by Iowa
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Reality, Specials, Cable, News,
Even those who aren’t politically savvy know about the Iowa Caucuses - perhaps that’s why they were covered on three different cable networks Thursday evening. The results are in, the votes tallied, and the outcome of the Caucus is pretty surprising. On the strength of these results alone, two Presidential hopefuls have already completely dropped out the race. That’s the strength of popular opinion…at least, in Iowa.
Republican Mike Huckabee was declared winner for his party early in the evening, with Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson falling well behind Huckabee in votes. Early Republican frontrunner John McCain had a dismal showing with only 14%, while former mayor Guiliani barely even registered on the poll.
On the Democratic side, Barack Obama leapt to an early lead and held on, becoming the party winner before the night was all said and done. Surprisingly, it was not Senator Hillary Clinton but John Edwards who fell into second place. Bill Richardson brought up the rear with a low 4%, while Democratic hopefuls Joe Biden and Chris Dodd - who have both since dropped out of the race - received 1% and 0% of the vote respectively.

The Funniest Shows on Cable
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, Reality, Cable, MTV,
Need a cure for the rerun blues? Forget about network and don’t worry about repeats - if you’ve never seen the show, it’s not a rerun to you. Get acquainted with some of the shows you may not even know about…and in some cases, you might wonder how you ever got along without them.
Cable TV offers plenty of diversion, and sure a lot of shows get repeated. But in the middle of a writers strike while studios scramble to find anything to put on the tube, those obscure (and hilarious) cable shows may just become the saving grace of evening TV watching. Check out four relatively obscure, yet hysterical, cable shows and find out just how fun reruns can be.

Corbin Bernsen will host a new original for GSN, the Game Show Network, starting in 2008. The game show, How Much is Enough, pushes contestants to find out just how strong their own greed is. Four competitors will face off against a ticking clock, each vying to win the biggest bucks with their secret buzzers.
The network ordered forty episodes of the game, which will start airing January 8 at 9 pm ET. How Much is Enough will be part of the channel’s regular lineup Tuesdays through Saturdays. The show marks Bernsen’s first game show hosting attempt. Bernsen currently stars in USA’s Psych, though most fans will remember him for his role on L. A. Law.
