Quote of the Day: Barnes & Noble

Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials,
If you're wondering where to invest your money now that Borders Books is in a state of freefall, you might hold off on putting some of your hard-earned money into the competition, Barnes & Noble.
“At the moment booksellers are something to avoid as an investment. Across the board, even for B&N, losses have exceeded expectations. Economics of digital business for B&N look worse than they should.”
-- Goldman Sachs analyst Matt Fassler speaking at Digital Book World.

Twain’s Huck Finn the Target of Censorship … Yes, Again

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories:
History really does repeat itself.
Once again, Mark Twain’s masterpiece Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is being censored … and, again, it’s because of some of the offensive words Twain used within the story.
And one in particular. Most are aware, even those who have never read the book, that the character Jim is referred to as the “N-word” Jim throughout the story. The word -- long considered the worst of offensive slurs -- has made the book a frequent target of public burnings, bans and controversy. Many school boards in many states have been asked to remove the book from student curriculum, though the book staunchly remains as required reading in many United States classrooms.
NewSouth Books is, perhaps, attempting to squash all that by simply editing the book. In their version of the story, all instances of the hated word will be removed, along with the word “Injun,” which is used to refer to Native Americans.

Their film didn't top the box office, nor did it have the best per screen average -- but Joel and Ethan Coen still have reason to smile.
True Grit, a two-time second-place finisher, has now grossed $86.7 million domestically -- a new record for the writing/directing duo. The Western, which added another $24.4 million to its total this past weekend, has officially surpassed the Coen brothers' previous record. (No Country for Old Men, released in 2007, raised $74.3 million.)
The only other notable item in the Top Ten this week was The King's Speech. The critically-acclaimed film replaced The Tourist in the tenth-place spot and averaged $11,108 per theater.

Quote of the Day: Cookbook Author Jamie Oliver on Reading

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Television,
"My daughter Poppy reads a book a day. I'm talking a book half an inch thick. I've never read a book in my life, ever, apart from my own, but I don't really read it, you're more editing and sculpting it."

Box Office Breakdown: Big Win for Little Fockers

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, Disney, Fox Searchlight, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros, Action, Adaptation, Adventure, Animation, Drama, Family, Period, Remakes, Science Fiction, Sequels, Comedy, Sports, Thrillers, Box Office, Lists,
A lack of a clear plot apparently meant very little to theatergoers this past weekend.
Little Fockers, which added another $30.8 million in ticket sales ($45.1 million since Wednesday) to the Fockers series, finished in first place after the holiday frame. Although the Ben Stiller/Robert De Niro production failed to top Meet the Fockers’ debut in 2004 ($46.1 million), the comedy did bring in more than the 2000 original. (Meet the Parents opened to $28.6 million.)
Meanwhile, the Jeff Bridges from the past found himself passing the Jeff Bridges from the future. True Grit, costarring Matt Damon and Hailee Steinfeld, roped in $24.9 million – the best number for the Coen brothers to date – and second place. The Western wound up landing just one notch above Tron, Bridges’ current sci-fi entry.

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Artist News, Upcoming Releases, Hip-Hop & Rap,
Tupac Shakur continues to remain a strong, mysterious musical force, and fans continue to feel the void he left behind ... but perhaps, some of their unanswered questions can still be addressed.
Journalist Kevin Powell has recently inked a deal to bring Tupac Shakur: The Authorized Biography to book stores, giving fans an inside look at the events that shaped, and ended, the rapper’s life.
His mother, Afeni Shakur, said the book is being written with her “full blessings.”
Tupac’s death will also be the center of a big-screen biopic from director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), which will focus on the events of his last day of life.
A documentary featuring the rapper’s time in jail, titled Uncut: The Lost Prison Tapes is scheduled for release January 26.
