Box Office Breakdown: Another Festive Weekend for Four Christmases

Faced with little competition, last week’s #1 lived to see another win. Four Christmases took in $16.8 million over the last three days - a 46% drop from its first outing - to bring its cumulative total to $69.8 million. The comedy was only one of two films to pass the $10 million mark this weekend.
The only new entries in the Top Ten were Cadillac Records and Punisher: War Zone. Despite a relatively small opening (it only hit 687 theaters), Cadillac averaged $5,015 per theater for a 9th place finish. Meanwhile, Punisher took in a disappointing $4.3 million, less than 1/3 of what the first film did in 2004.
Despite premiering at #22, Frost/Nixon was actually this weekend’s top performer. Ron Howard’s film earned a whopping $60,236 per screen average from only 3 theaters.

Box Office Breakdown: Number One for Four Christmases

Theatergoers still recovering from Thanksgiving had no problem getting into the Christmas spirit this last weekend.
Despite horrible reviews, Four Christmases - a holiday feature starring Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn - managed to pull in over $31 million over the past three days. (The comedy’s five-day total was $46 million.) That was enough to tame some hungry vampires and give Reese her best opening since Sweet Home Alabama. (The 2002 film had a $35.6 million debut.)
But even with Witherspoon and Vaughn’s combined wattage, Christmases still wasn’t the brightest spot on the box office tree. This weekend’s top performer was actually a political drama with a very limited release. Although it was only seen in 35 theaters, Milk, starring Sean Penn and James Franco, found itself sitting in 10th place. The Gus Van Sant film also averaged $40,385 per theater…nearly $31,000 more than the laugher did per screen.

Rihanna faints during Australia concert

It seems that all the leather and chains in the world won’t help you when your body is telling you that something’s wrong, as Rihanna found out during a recent performance in Australia. She was performing her hit Umbrella with Chris Brown, when she stumbled to the side of the stage and fainted. Chris tried to cover, continuing to sing his part, but you know he had to have felt quite a bit of concern over his fallen Boo. Towards the end of the video, you hear someone yelling for paramedics. Scary. Rihanna’s rep issued the following statement, basically saying that she is perfectly fine:
“It was very hot at the venue, so after Rihanna’s set was over, she went off stage to sit down, catch her breath and have some water. She is perfectly healthy and will be at her show tomorrow.”
NBC Tries to Remake Aussie Hit

NBC’s Kath & Kim will premiere tonight at 8:30 pm EST. And though the new series featuring Selma Blair and Molly Shannon (a comedy duo who should be perfect together) is being touted as a “sitcom following a dysfunctional mother-daughter duo and their adventures in middle-class suburbia,” the reviewers are taking a decidedly less lighthearted stance. The Boston Herald called the series a “problem child,” while zap2it said the first two episodes were “pretty laugh-free.” This is not the sort of response a comedy featuring two such gifted actresses should receive.
The series was a huge hit in Australia, which pretty well guaranteed it would find a home on American shores eventually. NBC picked up the remake baton and cast Blair as Shannon’s spoiled, thick-as-a-brick daughter (though the two are actually separated by only eight years in age). Molly Shannon plays Kath, spandex-wearing and man-hunting, to Blair’s Kim, a celebrity-obsessed, would-be trophy wife.

Australia Moves Out of Quantum’s Way

The post-Harry Potter shuffling still hasn’t settled down.
Fox, probably realizing Australia would now be facing extremely stiff competition, has decided to push its release back a few weeks. The WWII-era romance starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman will now premiere on November 26.
This decision comes a week after Sony chose to move Quantum of Solace to November 14, Australia‘s original date.
The studio’s strategic shift will not only the director more time to complete the film, it will pit the expensive drama against less threatening fare. Other films (currently) slated to open that day are Transporter 3 and Four Christmases.
Australia is Baz Luhrmann’s first film since 2001’s Moulin Rouge, a project also featuring Kidman.

Internet Voted Greatest Invention

In a survey of more than 5000 by News.com.au and Timesonline, 40% said that the Internet is the greatest invention since sliced bread. Coming in second was penicillin with a vote of 19.6%, while the TV remote captured 10.2%. On the other side of the survey, 40.8% of the voters said that reality TV was the worst thing to come out, followed by loud TV ads at 15.6% and Crocs (the shoes, we presume) with a vote of 15.3%. Oddly enough, Sudoku made both lists. Check out the complete survey.

Tributes to Heath Ledger

If you’re the type of person who immediately heads to the bathroom once a movie ends, you may want to limit your liquids during The Dark Knight. Exit quickly and you’ll miss Warner Bros.’ posthumous tribute to Heath Ledger.
The film’s closing credits will acknowledge two Batman contributors who have died since the project began. In addition to Ledger, the crew said goodbye last year to a special-effects worker killed after a car crash during a stunt test. The simple farewell will read:
“In memory of our friends Heath Ledger & Conway Wickliffe.”
Meanwhile, the residents of Perth, Australia (Heath’s hometown) have just paid tribute to the actor in a much grander fashion. On Tuesday, an $87 million theater was named in Ledger’s honor.
Western Australia state Premier Alan Carpenter said they hope the Heath Ledger Theater will help others who have been inspired by the Oscar-nominee’s work. “Heath Ledger was totally dedicated to the craft of being an actor and that’s what made him successful. I think what we’re doing is continuing that support for young people who want to make a career in the arts and acting, stage and in film, whatever it happens to be.”

Ian Usher Sells His Life for $233,000

Talk about depressing. Ian Usher was obviously devastated when his wife left him since he decided to auction off his life on eBay. The Australian resident was hoping to raise $475,000.00 to make a fresh start. The package included most of his worldly possessions and a chance to take over his job. The first day it appeared that the bids went as high as $2.1 million. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a glitch in the system, so when all was said and done the highest bid was only $233,000. While that is only about half of what he would have liked, that seems enough to make a pretty decent start.

Shadow Caddy for Golfers

It may be time for overworked caddies to find another line of work. The Shadow Caddy is a three-wheeled electronic device that carries golfers’ clubs without a remote. It works by a tracking system and simply follows you and your transmitter around. So far the caddy is only available for rent at Australian golf courses, but we are certain they would love to hear from anyone who wants one enough to import it to his/her countries.
