Barnes & Noble Nook e-reader: $260, color touchscreen, pre-order now

Someone over on the Barnes & Noble web team seems to have jumped the gun, because the official site was up for a few minutes, before quickly being pulled down. Luckily, we were able to get in, and even pre-order a unit, before things got pulled. The B&N Nook e-reader runs , and looks like it’ll give the Amazon Kindle a run for its money.

The device features a 6-inch screen, with a 3.5-inch color touchscreen beneath it. This gives you a quick method to browse your library, the store, and input text into the device. Definitely much easier than the Kindle’s hard keyboard. The device measures in at 7.7 x 4.9 x 0.5-inches, and weighs 11.2 ounces. You get 10 days of battery life if you turn off wireless, and the battery takes 3.5 hours to go from empty to full when plugged into a wall outlet. Speaking of wireless, the Nook actually sports both a 3G connection from AT&T, as well as built-in Wi-Fi 802.11b/g. Definitely an advantage over the Kindle, because even if you have poor cell reception, you can just connect to Wi-Fi to download a book. The Nook also includes 2GB of internal storage (enough to hold 1500 books,) a microSD slot for adding even more storage, MP3 playback, built-in speaker, headphone jack, and micro USB port for charging and syncing.

So, aside from the above, what sets this thing apart from the Kindle? For starters, you can lend books to friends for up to two weeks at a time, and they don’t even need a Nook of their own. They can access the Nook book content on an iPhone, iPod touch, BlackBerry, PC, or Mac. The lending of literature is one thing that went away with the Kindle, and we are happy to see it return with Nook. The Barnes & Noble store also has over a million titles available for download, with more than 500,000 of those being free ebooks. The Nook can also read PDFs, something the Kindle 2 can’t do.

Hey guys, just a reminder, the Nintendo dropped in price over the weekend, to $199, down from $249. That’s the first price cut we’ve seen here in North America for the wildly popular console. If you’ve been on the fence, now’s your chance at picking one up. Near me, both a Gamestop and a Target sold out of them this week, so the tactic may prove successful for Nintendo. Amazon does have Wii in stock right now, so go ahead and grab one, if it strikes your fancy.

Not being content at being the world’s biggest bookstore or having the lion’s share of the reader market, has just recently announced their line of audio/video and computer cables, launched under the AmazonBasics brand.  Right now, the Amazon cable line will include HDMI, USB, and FireWire cables, CD-Rs, DVR+R, DVD-R, networking cables and other various home theater cables.

A few days ago, we hit you with our Snow Leopard Review, and interspersed some videos into it. We admit, 2000 words may have been a bit much, and a bunch of you wrote in asking for one video review. Well, we’ve stitched together some of the Snow Leopard videos we’ve done, and put them all in one for a Snow Leopard video review. Mind you, this isn’t a full review of the entire operating system. Instead, we take a look at four or five new things that you, as a user, will see as new, different, or enhanced. In this video we look at the Finder, Expose, Dock Expose, Stacks, and a comparison between Quicktime X and Quicktime 7.

Xbox 360 with 250GB hard drive and Forza 3 spied on Amazon

Okay, hang on, we just posted about the Xbox 360 Elite price cut news, and now we are getting word that there may be a 250GB version of the Xbox 360 that will be dropping soon? According to Amazon Germany, there will soon be an Xbox 360 bundle that includes a 250GB head drive (over twice the size of the currently available 120GB drive,) 2 controllers, and Forza Motorsport 3. It’s priced at about $397, and we want it to be really. Very, very much.

Have you pre-ordered Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard?

‘s next major operating system release, hits stores and doorsteps this Friday, August 28th. That’s at least 4 days earlier than even Apple estimated, as the expectation all along has been that Snow Leopard would see a September release. On Monday, the online Apple Store went down briefly, and when it came back up, Snow Leopard was center stage, announcing a delivery date of August 28th to customers who pre-order, so they’d get it the same day that it hit stores. If you haven’t yet, Amazon has got some nice discounts:

Julie & Julia Sparks Cookbook Sales

Mastering the Art of French CookingFive years after her death, Julia Child is once again making news on film, television…and print.

Thanks to last weekend’s release of , the famed chef’s cookbook has received a boost in popularity. Mastering the Art of French Cooking, originally published in 1961, has now been at or near the top of both Amazon and Barnes and Nobles’ best-seller lists.

In the movie, ’ character, Julie Powell, attempts to create all of Mastering’s 524 recipes. Powell’s year-long journey became the basis for her own book, Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen. (That memoir - since retitled Julie and Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously - currently ranks #38 on Amazon.)

Amazon acquires Zappos

It has just been announced that has purchased the vastly popular Internet shoe retailer Zappos for $850 million. The sale, confirmed in a letter sent from Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh to his employees, was for $807 million in Amazon stock, plus $40 million in cash and restricted stock.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has also given some feedback on the acquisition as part of a video that he put out today, embedded above.
