There are wooden speakers and environmentally correct ones, but what if you could combine the two? That’s exactly what Woodchuck’s Woodgrain iPod/Laptop Speakers do. Available in both light and dark models, the speakers are surrounded in heavy duty cardboard and arrive flat. DIY and can they make you look hot without damaging your budget. We found the semi-recyclable devices available for only $13.50 a pair. We figure if the outsides wear out, you can use them as a pattern to make new ones with that leftover shoebox you couldn’t quite throw away.

Speaking of EMI, the new music service Spotify launched this week. Other companies they are dealing with include UMG, Sony BMG, WMG, Merlin and the Orchard. Already in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Finland, Norway and Sweden, it will make their way elsewhere by next year. Download and installing is simple for access to millions of tracks, and you can create and share playlists with your buds. The streaming is free since it is financed by advertising.

Gallery: Spotify Launches Free Music Service


EMI logoEMI has decided to offer their music directly to consumers with an online Web portal. Not only will they offer tracks and videos, there may be some freebies and non-EMI artists as well. The label says that it is doing this to collect customer behavior data and may use something akin to Pandora, which recommends tunes based on what music the user already prefers. We find this a fine idea, not only because it might cut costs in the overpriced and ailing CD sales market, but also isn’t it nice that someone may actually be listening?

There will be 300 each of Brazil and Midnight, and 100 pieces each of Gold and Platinum Grillz. At a size of 16-inches, the devices have a 1.5mm mini-jack for connection and are powered by a 9V battery. The Gold Grillz will be handled by Toy Tokyo at July’s San Diego Comic-Con with the designer/artist Victor “Marka” Quinonez present to sign them.

iTunes 8.01

We thought we were the only ones with issues with some of these smaller 8 issues, but obviously enough people were complaining that has pushed out a new version, iTunes 8.0.1, to address these things. We are happy that Genius is getting fixed, along with update checking. Here’s the full list:

  • Seamlessly plays the current song when creating a new Genius playlist.
  • Improves syncing spoken menus to iPod nano.
  • Addresses an issue of deleting HD TV episodes when downloading.
  • Improves checking for updates from the App Store
  • Improves accessibility with VoiceOver.
  • Addresses problems syncing Genius results to iPod.

Yamaha TSX-130Yamaha Japan’s new TSX-120 and 130 iPod docks are made with soft wood. Both have a 15W, 2ch amplifier output, two speakers, a frequency response of 60Hz ~ 20kHz, remote and FM tuner. The 130 also has USB drive connection and a CD drive for playback and recording. Japan gets this one first in December, with the price of the TSX-120 being ¥30,000 (~$ 300.00) and the TSX-130 with a ¥40,000 (~$ 400.00) price tag.

Nokia’s latest XpressMusic, the 5800, is coming out for the holidays. At a size of 4.37 x 2.04 x 0.61-inches and a weight of 3.84 oz., the S60 5th Edition touchscreen phone has a 3.2-inch 640 x 360p screen with stylus input, an aspect ratio of 16:9, a 3D image engine and dedicated Media Bar touch key. To text, there is an option with writing, mini QWERTY keyboard, full screen QWERTY and alpha-numeric keypad. The smartphone includes GPS, a 3.2MP auto-focus Zeiss lens with LED flash, HSDPA, WiFi, 81MB internal memory and 8GB with included microSD card. Look for a price of $495.00.
