We already know that plants thrive when you talk to them, but what if your plant decided to chat with you? The prototype Pet Plant by Junyi Heo keeps track of its soil temperature, humidity, and water condition, and lets its owner know what it needs by means of LCD display pictograms. Supposedly, it will also drain itself if over-watered. The Pet Plant’s USB interface charges and transmits the info from computer software. Perhaps the next gen of the gadget will scream out “Feed me, Seymore!”

Pacmba Chomps Down
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smart Home, Mods / Hacks, Video Games, Videos, Wireless / WiFi,
What do you get when you cross a Roomba with Pac-man? In Ron Tajima’s case, you get a Pacmba (don’t ask us how to pronounce it.) He took his droid vacuum, tacked on a board with 448 LEDs, and added a Bluetooth remote with circuit driver. Of course, he had to have something for the little guy to chomp on. This is Ron’s second foray into hacking his Roomba. We cannot wait to see what he will come up with next.

Kenneth Lylover Surf Chair
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech, PC / Laptop,

Kenneth Lylover created his Surf Chair for the “Internet Collection” competition at the Scandinavian Furniture Fair recently. It’s easy to see why he managed to nab the Best Product award. The arc-shaped chair has a built-in LCD display, a mouse and keyboard for the user’s lap, and a padded frame for comfort. We think it is a fine idea for couch potatoes who want to go the extra mile with their Net searching or those who work best in a semi-horizontal position.

When you feel like you want to take potshots at your alarm in the morning, now you can do just that with the Laser Target Alarm Clock. When it goes off, you shoot the laser directly into the target to turn it off for the next 24 hours, unless you change its time or manually deactivate the thing. We figure by the time you aim and go bang, you will certainly be awake. The clock takes 3 AAA batteries and the laser 3 LR44 (not included) at a price of $19.99.

Every year we get the urge to find the most awesome barbecues for the summer cooking of the beasts, and Direct Design’s Notebook Portable Grill is our first entry. At a size of 18 x 14 x 12-inches and a weight of about 8 lbs., the grill has a 192 sq. inch surface and a stainless steel grate with a waterproof surface. When it is not cooking up your dinner, you can pack it flat to go. No frills, no plug-in USB, this is a simple design that does what it is supposed to. The barbecue comes with a one-year warranty at a price of $48.00. If laptops continue to get smaller and thinner, we were thinking this would make a nifty carrier/desk top if cooking is too much of a challenge.

Dad’s Day is just around the corner, so consider Griller’s 6-in-1 Multi-Tool. The gadget has an electronic timer with alarm, a digital clock, a knife, a bottle opener, an LED to test the doneness and, get this, a built-in whistle for calling everyone to the table if they cannot smell the charred beast themselves. The Grill TEK runs on 3 included button cell batteries and clips to a belt or lanyard (also included.) At a price of $19.95, it might at least hint around that having someone else tend the cooking is a good thing.

Opto-Electronic Design FakeTV
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Home Entertainment, Smart Home, Misc. Tech,
While we all know that burglars usually avoid houses where there appears to be someone in the house, if you don’t have an alarm system or a watch dog, what else can you do to be safe? Opto-Electronic Design claims their FakeTV is the answer. Controlled by computer, the multi-color LED simulates a real 27-inch TV. A built-in light sensor comes on at dusk and turns off automatically when it’s dawn. While we like the idea of saving some energy while keeping our home safe, we are not completely convinced that this is the way to go. We figure if the burglar is looking for a way to get in anyway, he/she is smart enough to notice a phony television set.
