Sand+Time Watch

We know that almost everyone has one, but your egg timer probably hasn’t left the junk drawer in a decade. Designer Pavel Balykin has created the Sand+Time Watch to modernize the concept. The digital hourglass is used as a screen saver. If you want real numbers and an accurate time, you simply click a button. We are thinking that maybe we could get a company like Tokyoflash to turn Pavel’s prototype into a reality.

tinbotWe just received a tinbot and couldn’t be happier. Designed by artist Christopher Lee, it fit perfectly with our iPod classic. Everything is quite snug inside and we think that it gives our music player quite a bit of class. We figure for all our clumsiness that this case, with tin on the outside and neoprene inside, is perfect for travel and a lot classier than our basic iPod case. We definitely recommend them for the terminally clumsy who have an iPod video 30/60/80GB or a classic 80/160GB at the MSRP of $29.95. Although it is not waterproof, the tinbot is certainly water-resistant to a spring rain. A very kewl gift for others, too, especially if you want to decorate it yourself, as they have one you can customize for $10.00 less.

(Thanks, Julian)

Check out more shots after the jump.

Funded by DARPA, Boston Dynamics has developed the BigDog. About the size of a goat, it also has the dexterity of one. The gas-powered bot’s control system keeps it balanced so that it can navigate on all types of terrains. Sensors monitor such aspects as hydraulic pressure, oil temperature, engine temperature, rpm, and battery charge. Its legs move in an animalistic way and if something interferes, it simply absorbs the shock and carries on. Watch what happens when some dude decides to give it a kick.

Issey Miyake Minimalist WatchTokyoflash, home of the incomprehensible line of wristwatches, will also be including those from Japanese designers for a limited time. We especially like Naoto Fukasawa’s minimalist watch that is more than just your basic timepiece. The site says it is supposed to “resemble the various moods of a human, using the position of the dials and hands.” Available in white or blue, the water-resistant Issey Miyake watch comes with free shipping and carries a price of ¥38,900 ($401.03.)

We have discovered many odd clocks at Gear Live and this prototype is no exception.  Made out one of our fave toys, the Etch-A-Sketch Clock, built on the Arduino platform, was designed by the New York mechanical engineer Angela Yuan. When a minute goes by, the device tilts, shakes to remove the current display, and changes it to update the time. We think it is a novel idea and hope Ms.Yuan continues her creative streak.

Google Leprechaun

Sure and begorra! If you are looking for a place to hang out to get your green brew today, go over to Google Maps and get a pleasant surprise. To get into the St. Paddy’s spirit, Google has brought in a leprechaun as a traveling companion. Move him around and he leaves a rainbow trail. We don’t know if he will lead you to that pot o’ gold, but he will help you to find some places to celebrate the holiday. It sure beats MSN’s green home page although Yahoo’s header is a decent effort.

(Have a great holiday, folks!)

Red Hot Laser Light ShowIf you are a fan of laser shows, now you can put them on for you and your buds. The Red Hot Laser Light Show not only is encased in scarlet, it projects red circles, lines, spheres, and shapes. With two modes, if you add some tunes it will respond to the music. The device is portable, wireless, and includes a mic so you can bring it to the nearest pub to entertain everyone, until they tell you it is interfering their pool playing. Remember to get some AA batteries as they aren’t included. Get yours for $24.95.

Dextre ArmsWhen we last told you about Dextre, he was about to be launched to the ISS via Endeavor. It seems that all did not go well with the bot, who decided to sleep in a bit longer. It turns out that a cable design flaw wouldn’t allow power to turn him on. The astronauts finally got him up and running, then attached his hands to his arms and his arms to his torso. No one is sure yet about the reason for the dilemma since it wasn’t apparent in pre-flight testing, but NASA promises a thorough investigation.

Abduction LampAs you may recall, we introduced you to the Alien Abduction Lamp last year, a prototype designed by Lasse Klein complete with a pulsating beam. Now it turns out that because of the hype, this is one idea that has reached fruition. Although no date has been set for its sale and there is no final word on whether it will be made in plastic or metal and glass, we are pleased that it will be coming to market. New to the lamp will be human and bovine abductees, for it is well known that aliens love people and cows. We’ll keep you posted on when the UFO becomes available.

(Thanks, Lasse)
