“w00t” has been announced as the word of the year by Merriam-Webster. Site visitors were asked to vote on 20 words and phrases that were derived from the most frequently searched words. The runner-up was facebook, followed by conundrum, quixotic, blamestorm, sardoodledom, apathethic, Pecksniffian, hypocrite, and charlatan.
Some believe the word “w00t” came from the obsolete word “whoot” (“hoot”,) while others believe it originated from the bunnies in Quake III. We are not surprised that it took the top award, since we have seen the word cropping up in such items as shirts, buttons, tree ornaments, mousepads, and this cap for $14.89, designed for those who actually know what it means.

Fête Keeps Constant Temperature
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech,
Rosalin Chanyasak has designed this prototype for those of us that prefer our hot food to remain that way for more than a minute or two. The Fête Serving Plates use thermoelectric technology to maintain either hot or cold temperatures. Made of polycarbonate, they are dishwasher safe and come with covers so that you can pop them in the fridge if you have leftovers. LED icons show the ingredient list for alergy info, although we are pretty sure in most instances you would know that anyway.

Video: How Leopard’s dock was supposed to function
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Design, Software, Videos,

Being that I am an ADC member, I was able to enjoy the original dock functionality during the beta period of Leopard. No idea what we mean by that? Well basically, in the beta versions of Leopard, you were able to create Stacks that could be placed on the left side of the Dock, alongside the application icons. These would be Stacks of applications, that made things a lot more tidy in the Dock. An example would be putting Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Entourage into a Stack that you would name Microsoft Office. Then you have one icon representing all of those apps which would fan out for you to choose an app to launch. You set up a few of these app stacks, and you end up with a more organized Dock. This functionality has since disappeared from Leopard. Take a look at the Read More URL down at the end of this post to see a video of all this in action. Here’s hoping apple brings back the feature. It did rock. If you agree, let Apple know!

Olympic Athletes Glow in the Dark
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Wearables, Design, Misc. Tech,

This is what the well-dressed ski bum will be wearing in the future. Presented as part of Munich’s bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics, the LED-lit ski suit was designed by Willy Bogner. Solar-powered, it has an optical output ration of 55 Lumens/Watts. Also featured was the “Private Space Suit” with its flexible LED panel that can go on a jacket or pants with a lifespan of up to 50,000 hours. We hope that Germany has a lot more sun during its winter than we do or the clothing will be merely expensive and gaudy.

Futuro House Available for Non-Aliens
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Design, Smart Home,
Now is your chance to live in your own flying saucer. The Futuro House was designed in 1968/69 with a height of 500 cm, a diameter of 800 cm and a weight of 2200 kg. Made of glass fibre, it was meant to be mass produced inexpensively by the year 2000. It features 20 windows and a door with a flap that becomes a staircase and can be moved by helicopter. Made by Finnish metal worker Abloy Suomi, it was on sale at Christies in Paris November 27 but failed to bring in the expected quarter of a million dollars. We suspect that if you could come up with a figure close to that, they might be willing to let it go.

Scientists Explore Underwater Turbine Usage
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Misc. Tech, Science,

Rick Driscoll, the director of Florida Atlantic University’s CEOET (Center of Excellence in Ocean Energy Technology) and crew are developing underwater turbines that will create power from the Gulf Stream. They would be moored 1,000 ft. below the surface and should be capable of going through 8 billion gallons per minute. That’s enough energy to power up one third of the state of Florida. The team will be testing a prototype early next year. We wonder if, when this becomes feasible on a large scale, someone will find a way to harness it in, let’s say, a jacuzzi. We suspect the power companies would not be thrilled.

CDR Becomes Such a Square
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Accessories, Design, PC / Laptop, Software,
Using your old floppy disks for coasters these days? Poland’s Baba Akcja has designed CDRs in the shape of the 3.5-inch relics. Each one has enough storage space to hold 200 MB of data and comes with white and blue, red, green, and yellow labels to write the contents. You can get one for $10.00 or four of them for $28.00 at designboom. Just don’t make a mistake and attempt to set your coffee on it or try to place its square shape in a round slot.
