Swimmer

We don’t suppose we are telling any big secrets here by divulging that researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute developed a technique last year that uses stop motion video to help the Olympic swim teams. Professor Timothy Wei and team’s Digital Particle Image Velocimetry video-based flow measurement helps trainers analyze how much energy is exerted by a swimmer and how their body affects the water. Whew. Check out the video to see how it’s done.

Blackbird, Fly

Oddly enough, the Superheadz are releasing retro cameras. The Blackbird, fly has a twin lens arrangement and will make you feel at home at the next screening of “Magical Mystery Tour.” We understand that they only run about $100.00 each, meaning that you have to sacrifice auto-focus for looking cool. Even better than the name of the cam is the site of the Superheadz, so take a trip to the Magic Camera Tour 2008.

SunTable

The SunTable automatically stores back-up energy of laptops, cell phones, MP3 players, small appliances, and other electronic devices. The silicon solar cells charge the battery for about 4 hours for a laptop. It has volt and hour meters and a 12V DC output. Add its inverter and you have an extra outlet. Made of moisture-resistant teak, stainless steel, aluminum, fiberglass, and acrylic, there are no moving parts and it ships flat. And should it ever wear out, you can recycle it. At a size of 18 x 31 x 54-inches, it was created by Devang A. Shah and Mike Low and is priced at $2,200.00. For that price we wish it would give us a suntan, too.

Amateur Photographer is holding a competition for the company to help design it by asking 6 questions, such as whether you think it should have an external battery for extended printing. Dashbuster search pricing

Okay, Apple, we know that you’ve had some trouble getting your act together since the launch, but when you list two different prices in different areas of iTunes for the same app, that is when it is just getting ridiculous. Case in point, Dashbuster. I downloaded the free version from the about a week ago, as it sounded fantastic to be able to manage my Netflix queue from the iPhone. The app, however, was missing a couple of features that I wanted - namely, the ability to add movies to the queue, select the format of the disc, etc. That was to come in the pad version.

Well, due to the fact that Apple has been unable to push updates out in a timely fashion, the paid version was finished, but I had to wait about a week for it to hit the App Store. I searched for the app, saw it was available for $5, and proceeded to download it. I then saw that there was a bug in the app, where it wouldn’t show my queue at all. I emailed the developer, and he responded (almost immediately) offering help. He also mentioned that the app should have been $3.99, not $4.99 like I paid.

Scrabble for iPhone reviewLast year, my interest in Scrabble was brought to life with the release of the Scrabulous Facebook application. It was a good time challenging Facebook friends to old-fashioned word battles, and destroying them all with my superior wordsmithing skills. Or not. If you wanna test me, feel free to challenge me on Facebook. So what’s the point? Well, the moment that I saw that EA had released a version of Scrabble for the and iPod touch, I had to grab it immediately.  I mean, an official Scrabble game for the mobile device that I use more than any other? What’s not to love about that?

Well, we will tell you. Step on in for our full review of the Scrabble app for iPhone.

GM-Volt logoLyle Dennis, a big Chevrolet Volt fan, has released details from his website GM-Volt that says over 33,000 drivers intend to buy the electric car when it comes out in 2010. The report said that potential buyers were mostly in California, Texas, Florida, and Michigan, as well as 46 other countries at a price of ~$40,000.00. We saw the Volt at last year’s NAIAS in Detroit, and although the lithium-ion battery pack run vehicle (that goes as far as 40 miles per charge) was not much in terms of eye candy, we just hope that enough Michiganders will keep it in mind as SUVs are currently still the main vehicle here. Visit Dennis’ site for details and a link to the Wait List.

Ionic Smokeless AshtrayIf you are a smoker and those around you keep complaining, grab one of these Ionic Smokeless Ashtrays. It has claims that it will purify the air and eliminate odors and secondhand smoke. The device breaks the smoke down into tiny negatively charged particles and then dispenses with them in the dome. The ISA comes with a glass ashtray, has an on/off button, and needs 4AA batteries (not included.) At a size of 71/2 x 5 3/4 x 3 3/4-inches and with a price of $29.95, it is made of ABS plastic and, as any smoker knows, that is not the best material to have if you are sloppier than most.
