Barbie Xbox

Someone on eBay has modded up an original Xbox with Pepto-Bismol colored paint and some pink LEDs and put the atrocity up for sale. Gotta give them props, though - slapping the Barbie logo on it is sure to make this one sell for more than it’s actually worth.

Xbox Live According to a report at Xboxic, we may be seeing a large update to Xbox Live in the near future. “An inside source at Microsoft” has asserted that changes to the Dashboard, in-game problems, and the addition of web-cam capability will be seen in an upcoming Xbox Live update. Of course this is all a rumor, so we’re not sure what to think. If anything’s certain, we know we’ll see an Xbox Live update sometime, we just don’t know when it’ll be released or what it will feature. In the meantime, we’re left wondering.

Hideo Kojima PodcastHideo Kojima has to be one of the most cutting-edge game developers of our time. No, we aren’t referring to his development of the amazing graphics, gameplay, story, or sound within the Medal Gear Solid titles. Rather, it’s theblog he created some months ago along with his creation of a brand new podcast, entitled “Hidechan! Radio”!

If you’re looking for some massive details on MGS4, you’re not going to find any around here. Not yet at least. His first podcast features a discussion with the Japanese actor who plays Snake. According to the recording, the dialog for the game will be recorded throughout 2006. Unfortunately, the podcast hasn’t been released quite yet but Gamespot was nice enough to give us first details of the podcast (including the brief recording details.)

Look for more on his podcast soon.

TiVo Series 3 Remote

After putting up our video interview with TiVo where we looked at the Series 3, quite a few people asked if we had any images of the remote control so that they could see the changes up close. Fortunately, we do. We were able to go hands-on with the Series 3 remote control during our meeting with TiVo, and we have the pictures here to show for it. The two major changes we liked were that the navigation disc is now comprised of five individual buttons, and that the weighting of the remote on the whole has been changed so that you can tell whether you are holding it the right way or not without having to look at it. Check out the rest of the images after the jump.

GamestopOn Wednesday, we reported of rumored trouble at Gamestop that involved descriptions of mechanisms being used to cut costs and raise profits. As it turns out, that initial rumor may be out of line. According to another Gamestop manager, the manager in the original report was incorrect.

Here’s what the second manager has to say.

“I question the opinions of my colleague for several reasons. The first is his statement about ‘protecting profits.’ The fact of the matter is that this company, like many others, does enter a period of profit protection when sales are expected to drop. This early part of the year is traditionally one of the slowest for sales, so the company must make necessary cuts in order balance this out. While it is true that our payroll hours have taken a bit of a dip, I have seen no indication that managers must work extended hours. In fact, our schedules pretty much went back to what they were prior to the holiday season.”

As we all know, the video game industry sees a bulk of sales leading up to the holiday season and sales tend to drop way off at the beginning of the new year. Naturally, Gamestop executives have come to understand their business’s sales cycle and are in fact attempting to cut costs and raise profits - according to this second manager, the execs are attempting to do so in a proper way.

IGN has reported the top ten best selling Xbox Live Arcade games. We can say we are surprised at the game that took the number one spot…

  1. Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved
  2. Gauntlet
  3. Smash TV
  4. Bejeweled II
  5. Zuma
  6. Bankshot Billiards
  7. Outpost Kaloki
  8. Mutant Storm Reloaded
  9. Joust
  10. Wik: Fable of Souls

It’s good to see a variety of games (both old and new) on the list, but we’re looking forward to seeing more games being released on the Arcade in the new future, because in all honesty, there aren’t that many Xbox Live Arcade games available quite yet.

Subway JaredSurely the name Jared Fogel rings a bell. Jared’s the guy that’s been featured in just about every Subway advertisement over the last ten years, who boasts about how much weight he lost from eating at Subway. In total, he lost over 250 pounds since he changed his eating habits.

Before he lost that weight, he weighed in at a grand total of 425 pounds. Just recently, he blamed Nintendo for becoming overweight. Fogel describes being a child and holding the Nintendo controller with one hand while eating chips with his other hand. In all fairness, Nintendo shouldn’t be blamed here. Yes, the video game machine may have led to his obesity problem, but the Nintendo did not make him fat. Rather, his mom and dad’s poor parenting skills didn’t prevent him from putting on the excess weight.

We’re sure Jared understands the idea of responsibility, as he picked himself up and got into better eating and excercise habits. To blame Nintendo seems improper though.

1 Million World of WarcraftThe freight train that is World of Warcraft definitely isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. Blizzard just announced that its subscriber base in Europe has just passed 1 million, which brings the grand worldwide total to an amazing 5.5 million. How’s that for a big number?

While I’ve never played the title, I hear plenty about it. It’s covered in many places on the internet, a number of my friends play the game - I can’t get away from talk of WoW. I have no idea when the game’s subscriber count is going to peak, but I doubt it’ll be anytime soon. And I have a tough time thinking that another MMORPG will ever be able to unseat WoW’s dominance.

Mario Kart DSIt’s official. Mario Kart DS owns.

Nintendo’s DS titled has raced up the charts to become the top selling portable title for November and December ‘05, and also #6 on last month’s best sellers’. It looks like the Nintendo DS finally has a ‘must-have’ title. Yeah, Nintendogs, Advance Wars DS, and Kirby: Canvas Curse are all great games -  but the different games honestly don’t appeal to everyone. On the other hand, anyone from a casual to hardcore gamer can pick up MKDS and have a blast. The game’s online mode certainly helps the games replay and Nintendo doesn’t (and shouldn’t) expect the game’s sales to slow down anytime soon.
